  • This 1964 Plymouth Fury hardtop might have sold new because of Richard Petty’s domination of that year’s Daytona 500, as Petty lit the fuse on a decade of 426 Hemi NASCAR domination. But is THIS one Hemi powered? You know the answer…

Hi Steve's Family, I'm A 75 yr old V/N war vet. I'm A great fan of Steve, I've learned so much watching him work in salvage yards and do many other things. I enjoy junkyard crawl immensely . I'm now watching all of his videos so many each day on you tube. I've seen all of them as I've been a big fan ever since I found his channel yrs ago. Now I'm doing a Steve Mags review hoping it helps him to stay on you tube. I feel like I know him personally because of the way he speaks to us in his vids. I'm A Christian man and I pray for Steve daily. I wi!! Continue to do so. Hang tough my friend!!!

Way back in 1964 I was a 16 year-old living in Virginia and would listen to NASCAR races on AM radio (NO TV coverage back then!) and listened live when Richard Petty won the Daytona 500 in a '64 Hemi Fury. I later bought a rusty '64 318 as a work car. The driver's floor was almost gone but I managed to hammer in a sheet of steel to fix it. For the Winter I installed 15 inch snow tires and that car could not be stuck. I ended up selling it for $150 and bought a floor jack from Sears with that money. I still have that jack and every time I use it I think about the '64. A friend has a '64 Fury which has a stroked 440.

Probably one of the green or blue "328" (first three digits of the model #) prefix Japan made Yasui jacks. They are very good. For a time, Walker also made Sears jacks, which I believe had a "727" model prefix.

I wasn't born until 1968 but, since I don't spend enough time at home to justify paying for satellite or cable TV and, since my digital antenna isn't worth a damn if there's anything more than a slight breeze, I STILL listen to NASCAR races on the radio. It's on the FM band though.

My Dad bought a used red with red interior 1964 Plymouth sport fury 383 4bbl 727 torque flight transmission with 3:90? Gears, from a coworker, who’s wife was my babysitter after school ! Her name was Donna, and in the early fall of 1968, I went with her to pick up her brand new ,1969, 440, 4 spd 4:11 or 4:10 geared,GTX ! I was the first person to ride in the passenger seat!
They sent the car to, Motion / Baldwin performance, and had the engine balanced and blue printed! They also had some Hooker headers installed!
That car would scream! My dad bought their old sport fury! I loved that car!

Hi Steve great video on this Plymouth Fury. My grandmother had a black with red interior Sport Fury. It was the only car she kept for a long period of time. Everything else she owned or drove lasted a couple yrs and she ended up with something new. Most of hers it not all her cars were Chrysler wagons, she had a Mercury in the early 70s and later own a Olds wagon. The Plymouth was always in the garage and she rarely drove it. She loved that car. By the time i got the car my uncle had ruined the engine. She was puking oil out of the dipstick tube. 🙄 It was a 383 4bl car. If i got the story straight it was the 2nd 64 she had the 1st one was totaled when one of my uncles plowed into a bridge pillar. I dont know anything about that car. But I do know for a fact as far as I remember no one ever drove that car but her and my grandfather. I guess it was their date night car sometimes. But I'd rather been in grandpa's Imperial, more room in the backseat! EWWWWW! 🙉 Have a blessed day everyone 🤙🏼 Namaste 🙏🏼

That's the thing: GM put the power in the hands of the "regular Joe". Pontiac's Special Projects Group consisting of the likes of Jim Wangers, John DeLorean, Russ Gee, Malcolm "Mac" McKellar, John Schinella, Herb Adams and others would do things that would often raise the ire of GM management, but eventually they relented and realized that they were on to something. Ace Wilson's Royal Pontiac was often the test bed for performance parts and if they were good to go, GM assigned a part number to them and either sourced them from that vendor or made them internally. Milt Schornack, Chuck Brumfield and Bud Conrad were the main mechanics behind the Royal Bobcat package sold through the dealership.
No VIN, can't win, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 2 for Plymouth six cylinder, 3 for Fury, 4 for 1964 model year, 1 or 3 for Detroit, MI assembly (Lynch Road) and the rest is the production sequence. The Lynch Road facility closed in April 1981 and there is a powder coating business on that site now. No tag, can't brag, but might be something like 232 for Plymouth Fury two door hardtop coupe, H1B or H4B for Blue interior trim, E for Dark Blue exterior paint, among other codes.
My parents had a 1963 Sport Fury with a 318 V8 they sold sold shortly after I was born. My father went into the service a year or two after he bought it (prior to my parents getting married in 1965) and Chrysler froze the payments until he returned from active duty. He then joined the National Guard Reserves for several years after that and stopped a few years after I was born. The Johan building on Moran Ave is long gone and a Google image shows only one small building left that is also in the process of being knocked down.

I believe thatb the '64 Plymouth hardtop remains the best B body from the 1960s. I was in Jr High when my wrecked our new 1963 Falcon station wagon. We had it for such a short time I don't remember much of it. Neading a replacement, I, having read a neighbor's Drag news newspaper, lobbied strongly for a '64 Plymouth replacement. We were lucky as the local Chrysler Plymouth agency had a Chestnut Metalic Brown '64 Sport Fury. 361 2-bbl with auto, it was fine for me for the looks alone. It had power windows and an AM/FM radio, but std brakes and no A/C.
Years later i acquired the Sport Fury from my mother and now it is over half way to being a 426 Hemi car with a '68 Dana 60 rear and small minitubs. I spent the bucks for a Jericho 4-speed and the Hemi awaits my finishing the interior. I also have a 486 cu in Dan Dvorak built mega bloc bottom end Stg lll max wedge should I deside to go in that direction.

I love my GM muscle cars but I can't see a tri-power GTO winning vs. a 426 Fury off the dealership floor. Perhaps history would view Pontiac as trying to play catch-up with the Fury if Jim Wangers was working for Plymouth at the time. Wangers and Delorean really knew their audience and their marketing.

In the automotive industry, the pillar naming convention (A-pillar, B-pillar, C-pillar, and D-pillar) is fixed and independent of the presence or absence of any particular pillar. So the lack of a B-pillar on a hardtop does not "ripple" the B designation to the rear, to rename the C-pillar. A C-pillar is always a C-pillar with no regard to whether a B-pillar is there or not.

That's all Bill France ever did was try to figure out how to penalize Chrysler. He was truly a Chevy fan. Every time they couldn't compete he changed the rules. It's sad that Chrysler finally had enough and quit NASCAR.

Mopar engineering is second to none. Every competition a factory Mopar has competed, there has been Blue oval balling and Chevrolet crying.

Hi Steve, Didn't they also stop the super bird 426 from Racing, Cause nothing could keep up with it.

    • @Tumbleweed_Tx
      @Tumbleweed_Tx ปีที่แล้ว

they wouldn't let them run the 426 in the winged cars, so a guy ran a 305 Trans Am motor (destroked 340). He lead a few laps at the one race he entered in that car.

I had a buddy who used to race his 64 Sport Fury (413 Street Wedge) and was required to run in the same class as the Ramchargers because he swapped out the trans. Auto to 4 speed I think.
