That's very good instruction. I do use an external drive to store my photo albums. If I need to use my photos from my albums, I need to create another folder specific to DR. That could use up more space in my ext drive. Is there a better way?
Hi @T Yik. Thank you for the feedback. I would select any drive that has the most amount of free storage space. If you are running low on drive space in the middle of a project and you can no longer save, you should be able to adjust your folder location settings without affecting the project file in DaVinci Resolve itself. I hope that helps.
Thank you - very helpful. I am having a problem uploading media files into DaVinci Resolve from my external Harddrive - WD My Passport Ultra for Mac. When I choose a file from my external hard drive to import nothing happens. What do I need to do so I can open files from my external hard drives and store Cache to my external hard drive as well.
Hi @Gayle Jann. Do the files open on other devices or in other software please? I'm not sure whether the external device is malfunctioning. I've tried importing files from external storage and using this also as a location for cache files and it works fine on my computer.
Wow ! So clearly explained ! Thank you so much ! My sound waveforms would not appear any longer ! Such a game changer ! Since I have DaVinci 18.6, I have also the Proxy Generation Location appearing on top of the Cache and Gallery locations in the Master Settings menu... Should I do the same as with the Cache and Gallery locations ?
Hi @studioplanetesilhouette. Thank you very much for your kind words. I personally store all three of my folders for these settings (ProxyMedia, CacheClip, .gallery) all in the same directory but these can be different if you wish as each of the three categories of files are independent from one another. As long as you have sufficient space on the drive where your folder is located, this shouldn't cause a problem for your project. Hope that helps.
Super, really clear explanation. I'm working on large project and want to move the storage location of the cached files to an external SSD. Once I have created the new storage location, can I move the render files manually to the drive to avoid having to wait for the project to be re-rendered? Thanks in advance.
Hi @NigelBaines. Just to clarify, did you mean to relocate the media files that are currently used in your project file before you render? You can do this manually but then the clip thumbnails in your Media Pool will all turn red as you will need to select all of these, right-click and choose Relink Selected Clips, as DR won't recognise where you have moved these to yet. In the Relink window that appears, you will then have to select the new directory where these files are stored and you should then see the thumbnails return to normal. If it's just the cache files, as long as there is free space in your selected directory for these, it shouldn't be a problem if you change the location for these, but I would also recommend rendering what you have done so far, particularly as you are using external storage, to ensure that you have a media file saved as a preacaution. Hope that helps.
@@C0ntiChannel Thanks so much for the detailed and helpful reply. The render cache which was choking up my computer was rather large and I was hoping I could move the render cache and avoid having to re-render the project. But, I believe that is not possible.
Thank yuo for your video. Now i've just a couple of questions: as i have different projects in which i work, the folders "cache files" and "gallery still" will contain the all file of the different projects? thanks again and sorry for my english.
Hi @Fausto De Santis. You're very welcome. You can change the cache and gallery still directory locations for all projects or use the same folder if you want. As long as there is space on your HDD or SSD, you can store files for your projects in cache/gallery still folders anywhere and can change this whilst working on a project. Hope that helps.
Thank you for sharing this. The cacheclip file filled my operating system SSD with 515 GB of data and was interfering with Windows. This will help tremendously.
Hi @Udrys Praninskas. Yes, it is. Once you click on save in the Project Settings window after selecting the directories you want for storage, go to File and Save Project, so that the folder location will be applied to the project that you have open; this won't apply to other project files that you have stored in your Project Manager area for DaVinci Resolve when you first load the software. Hope that helps.
Thank you, this is very useful. Before knowing this I ran out of space on the C: and when I deleted the cache files the rendering time went up from 45-90 minutes to 12-14 hours, same kind of video, nothing fancy: just plain audio and a slideshow, no effects whatsoever. My question is, if I delete those finished videos from DaVinci's gallery, does that eliminate all the proxy and cache videos that pertained to them? Many others who deleted their cache have the same problem, extra extra long rendering hours, it makes you think some cache files shouldn't have been deleted. Any idea how to "go back to normal" with the rendering? Thanks a lot.
Hi @Pigeoneer Toy. Unfortunately if you can't restore the deleted gallery or cache files from the Recycle Bin, the rendering hours will remain very long as DaVinci Resolve will not be able to locate these files and therefore the rendering may not even complete. Removing anything from the gallery folder will render the cache folder useless as the gallery folder will contain all the data regarding the colour grading and stills that make up the multimedia content that the video clips in your project comprise of. If other saved projects for the software were causing a lot of storage space consumption, I would normally delete any older/irrelevant projects from the Project Manager window that appears when you first load the software and this will also remove the cache and gallery files that go with the deleted project to free up more space.
@@C0ntiChannel thank you very much for your answer. My rendering times improved with the new 18 version update I just did, but now the problem is 😅 huge temp files that lag editing and eat up my C: entirely, 0 bytes left! I switched the proxy and cache to the D: bc it's larger, but the amount of memory they're using up for very simple videos is crazy. This didn't happen before. The thing about changing the settings is I don't know the difference between them to discern what's best. Ppl do tutorials like "do this and that" but they don't say why and what the other options/results are. I went looking in DaVinci webpage but didn't find any info on cache & proxy files config. Do you have a tutorial on this or know of another channel that does? Thanks again. As soon as I figure this out I'll try your animation videos 🤩 they're awesome!
Hi @Pigeoneer Toy. You're welcome and thank you for the comment again. The proxy folder should basically hold your original footage in compressed format to make the playback on DaVinci quicker prior to editing. The cache folder on the other hand can store clips from your project file in a directory in optimized form so that the playback is enhanced once you have edited, e.g. added a Fusion or colour grading effect. You can also tell, which files are stored in cache when a blue line appears above these in your Edit window; if the file is not cached, a red line will appear instead and sometimes rendering fails when the software reaches these particular clips in the Deliver window as DaVinci Resolve has trouble reaching the clip's storage location. I'm not aware of any relevant tutorials on this although I would like to do one myself sometime. The problem that you have may be due to multiple high-rsolution video formats that you have inserted into your project but I haven't experienced this issue myself before. Perhaps you could try altering the Optimized Media and Media Cache properties in the Project Settings window under Master Settings instead. If, for example, you change the Proxy Media Format DNxHR HQX to DNxHR HQ, this could decrease the processing power required by DaVinci Resolve to handle your inserted, unedited media. Hope that helps.
@@C0ntiChannel yeah, that nasty red/blue line above the clips didn't appear until I deleted the cache files and the rendering time went through the roof. A quick solution I'm applying is changing the Time Proxy Resolution to "Quarter", that pesky red/blue line is no where to be found with this adjustment. Yay! There are other adjustments I need to make, prob ditching the Optimized Media, though I prefer to learn the options to choose the best one instead of trying to guess and potentially making it worse. I wish I were editing fancy high res videos lol but no, it's ONE .mov video I downloaded from a facebook live I did, kinda grainy actually 😅 you know how Fb compresses everything. All these troubles started when I first deleted the cache files, which means there must be a certain way of doing it right. I'll investigate more on those DNxHR HQX to DNxHR HQ formats. Let's hope we learn before the next DaVinci update lol thanks a lot! 🙌
Hi @Pigeoneer Toy. Many thanks for the update and well done on finding the 'Quarter' setting. I've never used videos from Facebook for DaVinci Resolve projects but I've never considered ditching optimized media altogether as I do find it is very helpful in terms of enhancing the speed in which we make videos in the software, particularly with larger raw stock footage files. In the meantime, I would keep all cache files for a project and identify ways in which storage spare could be reduced outside of the project such as other software or files on the computer that could be backed up on separate drives themselves. I hope that the proxy media format changes work for you also as it's something that I've only come across recently myself and it would be great to see how this boosts the software's performance in general. All the best!
Hi @Baulator. Many thanks for your feedback. This should be fine; as long as there is a directory set and there is sufficient storage space on your device, you can change the folder for your cache files, without affecting your project work in DaVinci Resolve.
Hi. Just found your channel and have subscribed. What is a Gallery Still and when is it created? I run DV16 on a Mac and the Gallery Stills are stored in a folder called ‘.gallery’. Since there is a ‘.’ in front of the filename this makes the folder normally invisible in the Finder ( equivalent to Windows Explorer). Any reason why it is invisible by default? Any harm in removing the ‘.’ from the file name to make it visible?
Hi @apeel2008. Many thanks for your comment and subscription. I assume that the folder is invisible by default just to avoid the computer user making any accidental changes to the folder and its contents, which could spoil a project that they are working on in DaVinci Resolve. I would think that there is no harm in removing the '.' at the start of the directory name as you can change the Gallery Stills location to a different directory without one of these symbols at the start of the name anyway. I've heard some DaVinci Resolve users mention that this is a directory for storing details of image stills including those that you work on in the Color tab but my folder only stores a .txt file with basic project details, such as the file name that I give each project when I save it. Perhaps there's some more invisible contents in these particular folders alongside the .txt files!
@@C0ntiChannel Thanks for the reply. That said, once you 'unhide' the '.gallery' folder, you would see that it contains a number of other folders (none are hidden) and in this folders are sone with just a single 'info.txt' file and some have another 'xxxx.dxp' files that presumably are the 'stills' There are no other 'hidden' files in these folders. I plan on leaving the .gallery folder hidden as designed, and not worry about it since it seems to be a relatively small sized folder (mine is only about 8MB in size.
Hi @apeel2008. I didn't actually see any 'xxxx.dxp' files in my folders; just the text files but I assume that those dxp files are project stills also. I can see the text files even when the folder is hidden also. I always keep my gallery stills folder the same too.
Hi @ImDaNomad. If you are unable to save DaVinci Resolve project files, you will have to free up storage space on one of your drives by removing anything that you no longer need.
Awesome video 1- So to recap , the cache file location under master setting of the project settings should be the same as media storage locations of system preferences . Correct ? 2- what is your preferred location of gallery still location , the same home folder of CacheClip ?
Hi @Mohd E. Thank you for your comment. Even in the most recent version of DaVinci Resolve, there may be inconsistencies with what directory is displayed in Media Storage Locations and in the Project Settings but as long as your drive has sufficient capacity, there should be no issue with saving your project. The Media Storage Location folder was only shown towards the end of the tutorial to illustrate what needs to be done if the software isn't letting you change the drive in which the cache files are stored in. The gallery still location directory could also match that of the cache clip but this is not necessary; as long as there's space on the drive that you're selecting, you should be able to save your current project. Hope that helps.
Hi @ExNihilo. I've not noticed too much of a difference myself in terms of the speed of playback although I have had the software crash a few more times on me on HDD than it did on SSD. I mainly go through this process of changing storage locations if I'm running out of storage space for a project on a particular drive.
boy i hope your like ma and read everything people say. Here it is, I'm in trouble, i was half way thru a project, ran out of room on C: drive, I now understand that was bad right from the beginning. However, I then went into preferences, pulled up media storage, deleted the pointer going to the c:vo01, and gave it another file location in D:. Hit save and quit resolve to restart. Resolve quits now everythime it is booting up and the project manager comes up, nothing, closes and I get my desktop back. Before I screw this up more, how am I to get resolve running again and fix it if I cant even get it to run?
Helpful. I left a thumbs up. =) But after restarting the program and looking at the project folders, it just says "CacheClip" as location and not the exact drive exactly, lol. Anyways, I manually set it to the drive I want just to be sure.
Great tutorial! Sub and Like! I have problem with that. After changing cache location all my clips in project show "media offline". Moving cache and gallery folder to new location didnt help. Anybody know where is the problem?
Hi @Greg K. Many thanks for your like and subscription. I'm sorry that you are having a problem with this. May I ask if you've already tried selecting the clips that you have in your media pool and chose the Relink Selected Clips option after you right-click? You can use this to check that the directory option here is the same one where the files in your media pool are stored on your computer. I've only experienced the Media Offline error if my original clips were placed in a different folder or if a Fusion filter wasn't rendered successfully and not when changing the gallery still/cache folder locations. Hope that you can solve this problem.

Hi @GYPG Bricks. Thank you so much for the feedback. Glad that my video was helpful to you.
i chanced but when i closed the settings panel its still be on default one its keep trolling me
Top man! I've been struggling with changing these setting for some time now, I would change them, but then they would change back even though I'd clicked save. You're video saved the day, I'll be saving it into my Davinci Resolve playlist.. Thumbs up and a Sub from me. Thanks so much. - Neil (UK)
Hi Neil. Many thanks for your message and I'm glad that the tutorial helped you. I've subbed to you also to support your channel. All the very best.
@@C0ntiChannel Thanks so much for your support, it’s very much appreciated. 👍
You're very welcome, @Neil Bradley MS. It's a pleasure!
Thank you so much my hero!
You're very welcome, @Danilo de Lúcio. Good luck with your projects in DR. Stay safe 👍
Great video, ty!

You're welcome, @Jordan Hunter. Glad that the tutorial was helpful. Stay safe.
THANK YOU!
You're very welcome, @Yurex! Stay safe 👍
Thank you so much ! @@C0ntiChannel
Very useful information
Many thanks for commenting, @UraFlight.
It worked, thanks

Lovely 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Thank yuo for your video. Now i've just a couple of questions: as i have different projects in which i work, the folders "cache files" and "gallery still" will contain the all file of the different projects?
thanks again and sorry for my english.
Hi @Fausto De Santis. You're very welcome. You can change the cache and gallery still directory locations for all projects or use the same folder if you want. As long as there is space on your HDD or SSD, you can store files for your projects in cache/gallery still folders anywhere and can change this whilst working on a project. Hope that helps.
thanks you help me so much

Is it possible to change working folder location for multiple projects simultaneously?
Hi @Udrys Praninskas. Yes, it is. Once you click on save in the Project Settings window after selecting the directories you want for storage, go to File and Save Project, so that the folder location will be applied to the project that you have open; this won't apply to other project files that you have stored in your Project Manager area for DaVinci Resolve when you first load the software. Hope that helps.
thanks so much

Thankyou! I had to change my User File name and couldn't figure out how to update my Davinci resolve errors. Thanks again!
You're welcome, @Will Pace.
But i need help with when it says "Capture Location update required" pls help
Great video. I was just asking myself if it would be okay to just transfer the files from the old CashClip folder to the new one. Does that work?
Hi @Baulator. Many thanks for your feedback. This should be fine; as long as there is a directory set and there is sufficient storage space on your device, you can change the folder for your cache files, without affecting your project work in DaVinci Resolve.
@@C0ntiChannel Thank you.
Thanks mate, I thought I was doomed. Save me
You're welcome, @celluloidboypictures245.
thanks bro
You're welcome, @seom.
So how do I load old cache from there?
Thanks :)
You're very welcome, @Honobirn.
What do I do if I don't have any other drives?
Hi @ImDaNomad. If you are unable to save DaVinci Resolve project files, you will have to free up storage space on one of your drives by removing anything that you no longer need.
@@C0ntiChannel Bought a new drive before I saw this 😂Works though! Thanks!
Awesome video
1- So to recap , the cache file location under master setting of the project settings should be the same as media storage locations of system preferences .
@@C0ntiChannel yeah you helped a lot in this very confusing subject , even the manual is not covering it, thanks again
You're very welcome!
How big is the difference between using a HDD for DR vs an SSD
Hi @ExNihilo. I've not noticed too much of a difference myself in terms of the speed of playback although I have had the software crash a few more times on me on HDD than it did on SSD. I mainly go through this process of changing storage locations if I'm running out of storage space for a project on a particular drive.
THANK YOU! I've been looking for someone to tell me that the problem is just my storage space before I completely f***ed my project settings.
You're very welcome, @Marian Gushev.
you save my life :)
Glad that the tutorial helped you, @ferano wibisono! Thanks for commenting.
boy i hope your like ma and read everything people say.
But after restarting the program and looking at the project folders, it just says "CacheClip" as location and not the exact drive exactly, lol. Anyways, I manually set it to the drive I want just to be sure.
thanks so much i had no idea why my ssd was getting so full

Not working for me
Great tutorial!

Davinchi does not have access to the video folder, so you need to add it through Windows security settings, and allow access to the video folder in documents, protection against spyware, allow the application to work through controlled access.
