Maria Marienko you should check out horror narrator Dr. Creepen! I actually thought this narrator was him the first time I listened. he has an extremely similar voice and cadence.
New headcanon: Mrs. Crocombe likes to go on holiday in the Devon countryside, dress up as the village crazy lady, and mess with the visiting upper crust. It's her way to blow off some steam and raise funds for her retirement.
For this recipe, you'll need: 1. Poisoned wine 2. A wealthy father 3. The bones of four dead husbands 4. A hound Sorry for the dark joke, people. Anyway, much love to Kathy Hipperson.
What a nice surprise to see the lovely Kathy Hipperson in a different role. 😍 You are quite a talented actress, Madame, and I hope to see many more English Heritage history videos. This is one of the most interesting channels on TH-cam; and I'm not even of English heritage.
Wonderful tales, very interesting. In this case, it shows the versatility of Kathy as an actress. Although, I think of her most often as Mrs. Crocombe.
Lots of you have been asking about the illustrations that feature in this series. They're the work of artist and illustrator Clive Hicks-Jenkins, who has also worked on our forthcoming book of new folktale, myth and legend, titled These Our Monsters: www.english-heritageshop.org.uk/books-media/these-our-monsters-the-english-heritage-book-of-new-folktale-myth-and-legend You can see more of Clive's work, and a video about how he produced our interactive myths map, at www.english-heritage.org.uk/tellingtales
Right! I'd let the poor boy ride in the coach with me. One blade of grass is hardly enough to eat for an active pup! I feel like the dog is getting the bad end of the deal here! He didn't kill any husbands! Yet he has to run after the murderess, as she rides in comfort and style, and then eat a blade of grass each night to end her curse. The injustice! 😂
"I like to keep my skulls in my satchel when walking the grounds near Okehampton, as is the proper and Victorian way. But I suppose other specters may want to carry them in a rucksack. As for me, I like doing it the *proper* way."
I love the level of creepiness of this. Not so creepy it freaks me out, but prompting a lovely shiver down the spine! And with a touch of wistfulness, mischief, and magic. Thanks and well done to everyone involved. ✨🍁
The art is lovely in this series. I love that we get to explore other sites we wouldn't otherwise see. And I love learning about the local folk tales... Thanks English Heritage! :)
We're glad you like it! The art is the work of Clive Hicks-Jenkins, who also illustrated our interactive online map of folklore: mythsmap.english-heritage.org.uk
Oh yes, do! And please let us know if you see her! Have you visited the castle? I'm in Canada. We are a "new" country so we have none of the rich history of Europe and the UK. I'm always just blown away when they speak of a castle from the 10th ~ 11th century or a church that's been in use for 400 years! We just don't have that here. Jenn 💖 in Canada 🇨🇦
I'm Indonesian and I really like watching this channel. About this folklore, it's second content that i really like after mrs crocombe cooked with victorian style. Big love from Indonesia!
Omg please make this an ongoing series or at least do more for October omg amazing video love English Heritage! Ugh Mrs. Crocombe is a snatched queen as usual. 💀🖤
The music in the background goes beautifully in accordance with the explanation in the videos, i love every video of this channel so much -Love from India:)
That was really interesting! Thanks English Heritage. P.S do Lord and Lady Braybroke know that Mrs Crocombe moonlights as a guide at Okehampton Castle? 🤔😂
It’s always a good time to spend watching this amazing TH-cam channel. I really like these stories and how they are interpreted and explained. Thank you and keep teaching us please 🌸
I still don't know how I came upon this channel all those months ago but I really enjoy it lol This one is very well done, I like that it was explained afterwards too. And the dog was so cute!
I really really REALLY love these. I've been subbed to this channel for almost two years now and I have to say, it's my favorite to go to when I want a little taste of what it was like in this era. My favorite are the cooking shows.
I enjoyed this video and enjoy seeing Kathy playing other characters, her talents show. I also enjoyed the part of the historian at the end giving us some history on the folklore. The power of rumors, the common folk making up stuff, eventually a "lie" repeated a thousand times becomes a fact when everybody around the subject is repeating what "must be the truth". I wonder what other things in folklore / tales were born due to people misinterpreting someone's else's life. I'd be like "Oi, mind your business.".
So she went through four husbands, unusual but other people did that too..we don’t know all the details. The hellhound was a nice touch. She’s probably just some minor noble who was blessed with good health
Is that the same person at the end, the Professor, who talked about wassail ale on an episode of Time Team? I seem to recall him (if it is him) on a few episodes of TT. Great programs, as are these. Thank you from here on Long Island!
“For this recipe, you will need: a pinch of cyanide, and a wealthy husband”
Sounds like the og comfort food.
Preferably served after a long day....
.....plus an ample dose of allspice and black pepper
I didn’t wanna like it because it was at 333
To Meme or Not To Meme “perfectly balanced, as all things should be”
This time our Mrs Crocombe nearly had the scene stolen by the pitch black hound of cuteness...
I know🐕😍🐕😍🐕😍
🐶🌿
almost...
NEARLY...
I think that is her really pet too. I see it on her Instagram page always
May I say that the storyteller has such a beautiful voice? Now I want an audiobook read by him!
I'll ask Simon next time I see him. Any requests?
I could be wrong but it may be, Professor Hutton's voice that we hear.
Does anyone else agree?
@@trojanette8345 wrong I'm afraid. The narrator is one of the male actors in the video. He also writes the scripts. Talented chap.
@@ASLEFshrugged I thought it would be great to have these tales as an audiobook.
Maria Marienko you should check out horror narrator Dr. Creepen! I actually thought this narrator was him the first time I listened. he has an extremely similar voice and cadence.
Kathy Hipperson is a brilliant talent; I love everything she does.
We quite agree!
New headcanon: Mrs. Crocombe likes to go on holiday in the Devon countryside, dress up as the village crazy lady, and mess with the visiting upper crust. It's her way to blow off some steam and raise funds for her retirement.
Plot twist: she really is the ghost of lady Mary of okehampton
For her obviously animated story telling, she deserved more than a coin, give that woman, paper!
You can't wish upon her waiting to receive "making soup for the poor" when she retires
I'd love to hear more English folklore here!
Then stay tuned, Joseph! Episode 6 coming soon...
@@EnglishHeritage Oh, jolly good.
Joseph Armes Me too
Excellent story telling. Sort of a cross between if Masterpiece Theatre met Tim Burton. The acting was great, especially you, Kathy.
Oh my, Mrs. Crocombe is a very busy bee! Remember when she saved The King?
Mrs. C gets around!
shes the immortal time traveller called the Cook or the nun.
Because she's the real Dr. Who
@Sarah Hamilfan She's a woman of many talents, is our Mrs. Crocombe!
How many job she has? A chef, maid, nun, fisherwoman, and a serial killer.
For this recipe, you'll need:
1. Poisoned wine
2. A wealthy father
3. The bones of four dead husbands
4. A hound
Sorry for the dark joke, people. Anyway, much love to Kathy Hipperson.

@@gabrieladerre2862 It's a terrible injustice!! Such a good boy deserves more than a silly blade of grass! :D
Well isn't that the cutest hellhound I ever saw!😘🐕
Love the actress aka mrs Crocombe and the other actors and the professor at the end.
😊👍
But but but. ... it’s Mrs Crocombe. I just have difficulty seeing Kathy as anyone else
Me , also .
I came here actually wondering if I'd see yet another incarnation of Mrs. Crocombe. 😄
Same 😂😂

Mrs Crocombe is only helping them make this video!
Ahh Mrs. Crocombe, you Sorceress you! Cook by day and villainess by night! Your hell hound is a good looking pup!
That’s an odd curse, indeed. Especially the part with the dog and the blade of grass.
Rara Avis yep, it’s a curse that will never be completed, so she’s forever doomed.
I mean have you ever tried landscaping,it is its own form of eternal sweaty hades,
As someone who has become a widow twice, I can see how it would be easy to start rumours like this.
What a wonderful presentation. And I thoroughly enjoyed Kathy's acting in this.
And legends say that after this video, Lady Braybrooke found a fingernail in one of Mrs Crocombes pies
a meat pie perchance?
@@bun04y yeah like mrs Lovett's beautiful meat pies, courtesy of Sweeney Todd
How DO these rumors get started! It was actually a dog hair in the pudding.
@@dawnschaeffer5728 now THAT is just evil, with all the meat from those plump chaps walking around, and you go for the cutsie wittle doggo? 👎
