Actually, Queen Elizabeth had thick layers of lead-made makeup to cover severe smallpox scars (and to make her face white and beautiful of course). Eventually the poison in her makeup ate away some of her skin so she had to get thicker and thicker layers which would make the effects worse since the flesh was literally being eaten away. Her lipstick had also mercury in it, as some of the comments mention. Her paintings show us a most likely "manipulated" version of reality, since she would only have her paintings done IF the artists only painted her as a true beauty. When she was older and her skin was extremely deteriorated, artists would copy the portaits of Elisabeth's youth in order not to annoy the queen.
That's actually contested - although the depth of her ceruse may have increased as she got older - the claim for 'thick' layers is not supported - there are very few contemporary testimonies to Elizabeth’s supposed ceruse overuse. Those that do are likely to have political/religious intent - eg they were made years later by a Catholic priest and were designed to denigrate her. It is true though that her later portraits were based on younger versions of her. She contracted small pox around the age of 29 - so for many years she would not have had those scars. Not all her lipsticks would have been vermilion (mercuric sulfide), carmine/cochineal (from insects) or madder (plants) were popular colours too. We truthfully don't really know exactly what she looked like. Accounts from the time vary (pale skin, swarthy skin) as such comments were always political.
Lol @ all of the people commenting about it being scripted and therefore a terrible video. This is an informational, professional piece where it’s supposed to be mutually understood between viewer and creator that the dialogue will be structured in order to convey the maximum amount of information possible in the provided duration. She did extremely well as an interviewer and I very much liked the video.
Yeah people need to calm down, if it was the other way around you would be getting people complaining that the video was too scattered and not informative enough, that would be like watching the Oprah Winfrey show or something like that and then criticizing accusing Opara of having picked questions ahead of time well yes Oprah knows exactly what she’s going to ask and in fact the guest on the talk show also knows what they’re going to be asked and they’ve prepared for the most part
@@Yt._.khushie I'll try to explain this the best I can (wish me luck) person A asks person B: would you like *thing* or *thing*, person B's answer is "yes" the joke is that B is saying they want both by answering like A was asking a "yes/no" question. This way of answering a question then started to be applied to different types of questions. I'm sorry if this came over as kinda vague
As a historian, I believe that we must learn all we can about a time period--not just important political events but also the social aspects of people's lives. This would include learning about the makeup, dress, food etc. That way we see the past (as much as we can) through the eyes of those who lived in those times. It makes people not just names on a page but as actual human beings. More of this, please!
Seeing the whole picture is essential in understanding the mindset of people in the past. It really bothers me when so many make judgments based on our present way of thinking. One has to understand the totality of the past. It makes for a richer experience. From peasant to monarch-each facet makes up a wonderful tapestry.

I feel like the presenter is dressed as a modern-day Elizabeth I. With the red hair, natural blush, the red lips, that lace collar, and a generally flamboyant outfit... Quite perfect actually.
I watched another series with Amber Butchart where they recreated costumes based on historical paintings. In each episode she would be dressed to reflect the style, mood, and period of the subject without being too literal about it. It was one of the best parts of the show to see how she managed that. She's super creative!

I quite like the host. I know everyone on here says she's irritating and stuff but the way they film this series is very traditional to television. It might be a bit annoying to listen to scripted scenes, but they do this to enable them to get as much information to the watcher / listener as they can. I feel like I'm in 2006 sitting on the floor of my living room watching old-era tv shows. It's nice. Also I like her fashion sense. I wouldn't wear it, but I love seeing people make a statement with their fashion, even if it doesn't always look great, the fact that people are confident to wear the things they love is really nice to see, especially when it's not normal in a major society's eyes.
@siimaniic What message do you think she’s sending? To me, the message is that she has no idea who she is underneath all the extreme makeup, exaggerated clothes and flamboyant, phony persona.
Queen Elizabeth was a conscious type of Queen. She wanted to achieve the porcelain look on her face, that is why they keep covering up her face with a dangerous make-up. She is no ordinary Queen, she is fashionable, classic and stylish. :)
I would love to see natural fabric dyes grown from seed, harvested, made into dyes and then used to create period clothing. In college there was a chapter in art history about British textiles and a journal entry by a British woman about the "wode" harvest...I have always wanted to recreate that.
I actually have dyed fabric using historically accurate techniques and made clothing from it (historical costume is a hobby of mine,). The dress she has in the completed look at the end would be a good choice for natural dyes, as reds and oranges and the like have very strong natural dyes available, although I do not wish that much gold/silver thread embroidery on anyone (trust me, a polyester core saves so much in nervous sweat, tears, and frustration alone that anyone who has tried working with the real stuff will forgive the historical inaccuracy of using a modern thread). Woad can be very finicky, and a bit dangerous, since the pH has to be elevated to 10 or above for the molecules responsible for the color to be in the correct state to attach to the fabric you are dyeing. The blue color also tends to be faded compared to other colors (reds in particular are stunning with historically accurate dyes), and the environmental impact is pretty steep for what you get (same today with the indigo industry, actually, although indigo produces a better color; it's the waste and amount of water that makes it concerning). It is very difficult to get solid, vivid coloring, but a master dyer can do it. If you have the room and time, dyeing can be way more fun than you'd think. Since you mention woad specifically, I would recommend trying it in a small batch at home and outside, or even buying a tie-dye kit with indigo (gives you the same effect, and you can at least see if you like dyeing at all before investing in a bigger project, because the start up can be a bit pricey). You can also view videos here on YT that show people dyeing with woad/indigo. I admit, the most AWESOME part of dyeing with woad or indigo is the color change when the air oxidizes it. Yellow to green to blue in SECONDS.
Amber Butchart, the host of this video, had a BBC show called A Stitch In Time where they recreate garments from art history using historical methods. In the Arnolfini Portrait episode, there's a part about fabric dying. It's available to watch on TH-cam, just search it :)
Legit, I suffered from acne and hyperpigmentation for six years. I saw a dermatologist and her products made my face break out even more. I saw this video and decided to try out the egg white for my face. No joke, within two weeks, my scars had lightened so much, and disappeared after two months. My skin has never looked better. I mix it with yogurt and it's just such a game changer.
I thought “how could she have possibly thought that makeup was beautiful” but now I see it. I see the youthful look it gives with the pale skin and perfectly placed rouge. So interesting! In fact, it’s hardly different from the makeup the host is wearing with exception to the eyes.
I want that girl to do my makeup, every stroke and touch she makes, makes me feel relaxed. She is so into it. No fair, the model probably had to try not to fall asleep lol
The original queen of hearts in the book looked nothing like disney or Tim burton's versions. Lewis Carroll's drawing and characters were very plain and muted. The cheshire cat was literally a brown tabby.
I admit it, I love this stuff. Not just the appearance, but you've shared the ingredients and history of the time. The skin isn't as clown-white as I expected.
When I remember almost of all of the makeup back then were made from leds and mercury... And she removed her makeup every week instead every night... I don't feel so bad 😂😂😂
I actually really like Amber, and her documentarylike demeanor. I also admire the fact that she is dressed so uniquiely, individuality is sadly a dying art.
Kaede Akamatsu well it’s obviously not silly to her if she is wearing it. I know this is just your opinion but don’t be so rude. Have a great day 🙂👍🏻💇🏻♀️

I wouldn't wear it, but I love seeing people make a statement with their fashion, even if it doesn't always look great, the fact that people are confident to wear the things they love is really nice to see, especially when it's not normal in a major society's eyes.
omg yeah!!!!!
@siimaniic What message do you think she’s sending? To me, the message is that she has no idea who she is underneath all the extreme makeup, exaggerated clothes and flamboyant, phony persona.
So normal American tv....

@@River61 in short, everyone was on drugs already.
Queen Elizabeth was a conscious type of Queen. She wanted to achieve the porcelain look on her face, that is why they keep covering up her face with a dangerous make-up. She is no ordinary Queen, she is fashionable, classic and stylish. :)
The model's eyes! It's a beauty!
I would love to see natural fabric dyes grown from seed, harvested, made into dyes and then used to create period clothing. In college there was a chapter in art history about British textiles and a journal entry by a British woman about the "wode" harvest...I have always wanted to recreate that.
Oh, I like that idea. I would also find that very interesting.
Yes please!
Check out the channel "How to make everything" it's so interesting!

You know, I'm gonna try that for myself! God knows I need it!

She looks like the small-headed version of the queen of Hearts
I guess the queen of hearts was based on that kind of image?
ツ3JOH55A lol
IDK if this is a fact but Queen Elizabeth I is an inspiration for the Queen of hearts
The original queen of hearts in the book looked nothing like disney or Tim burton's versions. Lewis Carroll's drawing and characters were very plain and muted. The cheshire cat was literally a brown tabby.
Okay so I'm the 666th like
I admit it, I love this stuff. Not just the appearance, but you've shared the ingredients and history of the time. The skin isn't as clown-white as I expected.
The fact Elizabeth's makeup killed her......lovely indeed
When I remember almost of all of the makeup back then were made from leds and mercury... And she removed her makeup every week instead every night... I don't feel so bad 😂😂😂
And the make up remover might of had more mercury
Basically what killed her internally
