"Project Wilson" 1977 KZ1000A Full Story

  • This is the continuation of “Project Wilson,” the 1977 KZ1000A that I purchased from my friend's estate. It was changed into an LTD back in the day, because that was the thing to do. We did a semi-custom restoration, changing it back to a KZ1000A. We ran into a lot of problems along the way, as we often do with projects such as this, but we think it turned out pretty nice for a fun every-day rider or a great start to an exceptional restore. The unusual paint scheme sets this bike apart. It just so happens that we are launching this video on what would have been Wilson’s birthday.

Had a 77 KZ1000 in 78. I rode it hard , but took good care of it. Put a Kerker on it, oil cooler, etc. The Kawasaki mechanic I knew said it was one of the fastest stock 1000s he had ridden.Brought it to local dragstrip and ran 11.8 at 109. Fastfor that time period. Not bad for the 1st run. I remembe r going after GS 1000s, XS 11s, and Kawi Mach 4s and took them all. Freedom to do so , without the Gestapo behind every tree. The 70s were the last decade that didn't include millions of arrogant nobodys trying to run you down. I wish I had a time machine.

I've had several KZ 650s and a couple KZ 900s and you cant beat the sound of a Kawi 4 and a Kerker IMO. I like bikes like this, made to ride and not stress over a complete resto.

nice build. got a question maybe you know. i'm working on a 83 gpz and on the frame there is this small pipe welded to the frame right near the clutch cable adjuster. it shows this pipe on the diagram of the frame so its not something someone welded on. the pipe has no threads. do you know what this pipe is for?

I’d like to get ahold of a older Kawasaki like this. Just to have one to take out when I don’t wanna be on my modern Z1000. Wish list would be you guys to move to Nebraska. Near Lincoln. Lol.

Glad I found this video! Just picked up an 82' KZ1100D project build. I dubbed it it "Operation Spectre." Can anyone tell me if the KZ1100/KZ1000 factory manual works with the Spectre other than the shaft drive/air suspension aspect of it or does a guy really need the 1100D manual? Checked some forums and no luck finding much. I know enough to know that I know nothing and this is my first attempt at a full project build so I'm learning as I go with this one.

Hi I’ve been watching your vids for a while now and love what you do to these bikes. Personally I have a 1984 zn700 from kawasaki that I would love for you guys to restore. I ride it daily, it leaks pretty bad, but all in all, as my first vehicle I never want to lose her. So I need your help. What should I do

I had an early USA made 1977 KZ1000A1 and it did not have the seat catch-bar. I think that it was a US-made-frame thing, because my Japanese made bike did have the catch bar.
Also, your bike should have a round front master cylinder. The trapezoidal m/c was 1978 and later.

KZ1000A1 1977 had front brake caliper in front of the forkleg and a round front brake master cylinder. Perhaps this is a KZ1000A2 from 1978? Or a '77 with some later parts? Nice bike anyway and the sound is glorious.

KZ 1000 instead of Z1000 in Australia had duel disc on the front. Chrome or stainless pipes and original paint would have been nice.

Of course not. Usually in Ohio this time of year we have to work around the rain storms, but our intention is to always put some miles on to work out any potential problems.
