As far as I am aware, the Z1000 had a four into 2 exhaust system fitted as standard. That is why I preferred the Z900 for that beautiful 4 into 4 which for me, was the best looking 4 pipe system ever made.
Bought my 1978 black & gold stripe new as a leftover in 1979 as a junior in college. A good friend had the same model in red. Great power and smooth as silk on the highway. Got mine up to 130 m.p.h. downhill on I-89 in central Vermont. Tremendous pulling and roll on speed in any gear. Need to pass a semi just whack it down 1 gear and hold on. Man those were the good old days.
Linda, bella, beautifull, schön, belle... One of the most atractive bikes in history! Not to mention, it was the fastest for more than half a decade, long live The King!
A blast from my past. I bought the exact same bike in that same color back in '77. That was an excellent machine except for the unnerving tendency to shake its head when cornering under acceleration. The engine was bullet proof though. I don't recall that mine had chrome instrument housings, and the lower down tubes on the front end weren't chrome, and the rear springs WERE chromed. I paid about $2,700 new for it if I recall correctly. I cherished that bike until 1990 when I sold it for, get this: $500! I needed the cash for another bike. Can you guess how hard I'm kicking myself today?
Mad max toys. I have special feeling for this one the 900 and the Z1-R and one more I saw in Italy back in early 80s. And I am a Honda Lover...well Black Bird XX 1100 is my favorite.
The first bike I ever owned was a 1973 Z1. It was bulletproof except for chains and sprockets. Best times and memories on a bike I ever had. I sold it when I was laid off. I would buy another if I could find one at a reasonable price and I am 67 years young. Those mikuni carbs sing. another if I could find one
Yes, the power could cause the teeth of the rear sprocket to curve/curl - eventually bad enough it would constantly grab at the chain - not wanting to turn loose of it. I recently went up a notch (16 teeth) on front and down a couple notch (33 teeth) in the rear - so have higher top end and lower rpm. Still more than enough power but I would go the other way if wanting a faster drag bike - not much faster but if you are looking to shave a little time at the track, okay, maybe a tenth or two.
Very Nice bike, wrong exhausts as he probably knows, the last Zed to have those 4 into 4 was the 1976 Z900 (or KZ900 in the US), in 1977 the Z1000 was released with a 4 into 2 exhaust system, wrong rear shocks they should be all chrome and it should have black clocks not chrome, also they were available in Red or Blue only, in the US there may have been a black option but in that case it should have 'KZ1000' badges on it not Z1000. The owner may know all this and has just restored it as he wanted so fair play nothing wrong in that, but I'm talking to everyone else that may be looking to buy one in original condition, mine has Koni rear shocks and a 4 into 1 stainless exhaust and a braced swingarm, other than that mostly stock. This one revs nice the carbs must be well balanced to pick up revs like that.
I had exact the same in 1980 Sold it with tears in my eyes in 1986, not knowing I would own so many more bikes My later ones were new R1s from 1998 until 2014 when I got my CBR1000RR Repsol No matter what, bike big bikes are fun/ especially on circuits
I got my own little slice of history, a 75’ Z1b. It’s not a 10/10 mint, but a solid 9/10. Not original paint and 4/1 header, but that’s what like to listen to anyway. Everywhere I go it draws so much attention, even after all these years later. She still runs like stink !! 😎
Envious jealous and want one bad, in Australia there was a movie released in the 70s called Stone that used the Hell's Angels as extras and unlike today they all rode big cc Japanese Superbikes Like the Z1000
Ok, schade.

And green was not available in 1977, just red and blue. The chrome-cups of speedo- and rev-meter are aftermarket.
This bike looked good but sounded mechanically noisy to me.

Should of had those pipes on as standard instead of four into two cannot beat the look of those four pipes

Sorry it was the fastest production bike for only 1 year. The 1978 Yamaha 1100 kick my ass in 1978
I think they are the best looking 💯
