Northern lights over OXFORD - 11th May 2024

  • A giant solar storm caused the northern lights to be visible as far south as Oxford on the 10th May 2024 🤯😍 here’s a quick timelapse of what I saw! The aurora are due to high energy particles buried up by the Sun in the solar storm hitting molecules in our atmosphere and causing them to glow. The greens are from Oxygen low down in the atmosphere, the pinks from Oxygen high up in the atmosphere, and the purples from Nitrogen. You could just about see the colours with your eyes alone but the camera picked it out even more #aurora #northernlights #geomagneticstorm #oxford #uk #astronomy #nightsky #womeninstem #timelapse

@@rinleezprobably not because it was like a storm with the sun and that caused them to be brighter

@@rinleez yes there will be more! Check the NOAA space weather prediction center. The geomagnetic storm peaked again just 2 hours ago with G5 which is the highest possible level for Aurora! Enjoy the show tonight!

I just spent over 3hrs watching the aurora out in a dark sky site here in southern MN. It was truly amazing, the way they dance and undalate directly overhead. And at times I could see the colors quite clearly, especially the red stood out. And then a little bit before I was going to head home it started to be a beautiful deep purple color, not like the green and red/pink that it had been for the whole time before that. I sure hope I can see another show like that again tonight.

I've seen two waves around 10 PM on May 10 and again around midnight May 11. Managed to take long exposure photos, but even with the naked eye I was able to distinguish the colours and the vertical lines appearing and disappearing.

when i saw this, i ran outside. i thought it was too cloudy to see the aurora at first. then i realized the clouds were pulsing across the sky. got some brilliant pictures over the last few hours. can't thank you enough for the heads up, doc.

That's exactly what happened to me lol. The news said that the Aurora would probably be down low by the northern horizon and the forecast said "low" chance of Aurora. So when I came outside into my backyard and looked up for a second I wasn't expecting to see the Aurora so I was like "aww, clouds" and then I realized a second later that it wasn't actually clouds and the Aurora was directly overhead. It was mind blowing.

For those of you that missed this last night, fear not! Whether you're in Europe, North America or in the souther hemisphere, the show continue tonight. Just 2 hours ago the NOAA space weather prediction center announced G5 conditions occured again! This is expected to continue to come and go, so follow their forecasts and try going out a few times (the strength of these lights can change dramatically every few minutes). Let your eyes adjust to the dark, snap a few night mode photos, and enjoy!

Hey Oxford😀. I just went to a conference there in Sommerville collage and that Somerville was a female astronomer and i said in the chatgroup i hope the torch can be handed to Becky Smethurst❤Someone notified me about the Aurora and so i looked for a quiet dark place and went to a sportsfield at st. Andrews School and with the naked eye it looked like white veils, but on the camera it looked amazing. I also never experienced one this intense. Last time i saw an Aurora was in Finland in 1997, but less colourful, though there was comet Hale Bopp with three tails.
