This film incapsulates my entire high school experience and distills it into one amazing show. I was a senior in HS and it was April, 1981 - weeks from graduation, and I saw this show in Indy. It was, without a doubt, one of the best rock shows I have ever seen to date, and I saw them do the re-hashed Paradise Theater tour in the 90's - not the same. When this film was made, they were at their zenith. They ruled rock radio, they were selling out all over the world, and they had this incredible stage show to cap it all off. Yes, looking back, some of it is pompous, over the top. But that's what R&R was about back then - windmill guitar moves, big theatrics - it was all part of the experience. And this show was, in my mind, the culmination of all of that. My life changed drastically after that show. I graduated HS and started making my own way in music. But DDY and the band had a huge influence on me during those years. This concert was the celebration of my entire HS experience, my "graduation present" to myself. I'll never, ever forget - and nothing will ever compare to that time. In some ways I feel this concert was the last of the big arena rock shows that dominated the 70's. I never saw an arena concert after this one that really compared. Light up - and crank it up with the lights low - and maybe you can get some of that feeling back again.
I bet they, Styx loved it along with you! What a rush that must have been for them. To share their great songs, and talents, and to have their fans love them must have been so awesome.
I've been listening to Styx since I was like 13...Im 59 ,do the math...Ive invested alot of time , album $ ,ticket $ , tshirts, heart aches, break ups..even cancer..and I love these cats..I do miss Dennis ..miss him terribly.
I saw Dennis DeYoung (and Night Ranger) just last weekend. I was amazed at 70 years old how great his voice still sounds. My 14 year old son was blown away.
Dennis DeYoung... incredible singer, musician and song writer. So sad that that Styx crumbled after the Kilroy fiasco. I saw them on the 'Cornerstone' tour, the 'Paradise' tour and the 'Kilroy' tour... always tight and sounding awesome. All the band members gelled so well and made Styx an incredible band. I'm glad I was part of the party...
Styx didn't crumble after Kilroy. Tommy quit. Styx should have replaced him in 83 and continued on. The biggest mistake Styx ever made was taking a break from 83 to 1990, when they finally replaced Tommy with Glen Burtnik.
This was my very first concert. I have been to hundreds afterwards, and they all have been a let down to what I witness that fateful night. I thought all concerts where going to be like that one. Styx ruined me forever. It wasn't just a concert I witnessed but a musical masterpiece. Absolutely incredible performance! Thank you to whom found this and posted it. I have been looking to relive this night for pretty much most of my life and there it is.....Freakin awesome... Music lovers enjoy!! This is Styx at their best.
Agreed! My first concert too (1979). The 1981 tour as represented here, was "grander" but still enjoyable. Downhill ever since (seen them every tour since, including the first without Dennis only because Tommy thought it would be cool not to tell anyone he wasn't there) and that was and will be my last Styx "concert" (unless the river Styx freezes over and they ask Dennis back). Still enjoy seeing Dennis solo, though.
I was a, and still am a big Styx and RUSH fan. RUSH did that to me too. After seeing them in 1980 in Binghamton N.Y. no other concert could compare. They were literally standing in their puddles of sweat. I couldn't believe it. They played 3 hours straight! I never saw Styx but I wish I did and I know what you mean!
I was one year out of High School at Monroe High School in Sepulveda, California and went to the STYX concert at the Forum (30,000) sold out..it was awesome….2 years prior I saw STYX on the Cornerstone Tour with the Cars….it’s the 1st without GTRs with cables…it was..early Bluetooth! Imagine that😉
PIECES OF EIGHT and PARADISE THEATER were the definitve Styx albums. It showed them at their very peak and the espective tours were out of this world. The impressions will last for the rest of my life.
Cap Center, wow, so many memories there. This band was a guilty pleasure for those of us into prog rock, they were tight, for crying out loud. The music was complex, the ideas presented made you think and the musicianship was crazy. Listen to Blue Collar Man and ask where that spirit is now is the US?
Thanks for the wonderful memories! This was the first concert I ever attended (2nd was the Rolling Stones FIRST Final World Tour, at Red Rocks)! I still have my unused "silk sticker" from this concert... Great times, great music, great performance!
I've seen Styx several times. I saw this tour on 02-April-1981 at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, PA. We had seats in about the tenth row. Excellent location for such a visual show. I believe that this video is identical to what I saw. I purchased this concert on VHS a few years after the concert was recorded. This is a much improved version of what I purchased many years ago. While I has seen Pink Floyd, The Tubes and Alice Cooper this was really special. I enjoyed it so much.
I still have my ticket stub from this concert. Great times, incredible memories. Also had the 4th row at the Civic Center in Baltimore---if only we could turn back the hands of time like he says in Rockin the Paradise intro
I didn't get to see that show, although I wanted to. It was Friday, July 31st at the (then), Baltimore Civic Center. I'm from Baltimore. Only lived about 10 or 15 minutes away from there.

Styx on this tour was my first ever concert. They were easily my favorite band at this point when I was in jr. high. While my musical interests turned elsewhere as I got older, with decades of hind sight, this is really a great set! It would be nice to see this restored.
I saw this tour in Lakeland, Fl and it absolutely blew my mind. Not only did the album have a concept, but the show did too and it was great how they separated it into 2 acts (no intermission) with AD 1928 starting it, Best of Times kicking off Act 2 and ending it with AD 1958...Perfect Rock Theater! And made a big impression on an 18 year kid.
Dennis , JY ,& Tommy all sounded great live ..annunciating their lyrics ...keyboards & guitars pristeen..Ive seen this band like 8 times..travelled all over the south for Grand Illusion & Paradise Theatre tours..HAD A LARGE TIME !!!
This was the first tour/concert I attended, at the tender age of 13. Without parents, even! Pretty much as I recall, though it's good to have the memory jogged a bit. Saw the show at the Summit in Houston, TX. And with that, my lifelong love affair with live music, playing music, and enjoying the hell out of a good show began.
First concert I went to June 1981 at Bismarck Civic Center. Dennis DeYoung traded his tour jacket for satin Starter jacket from Chicago White Sox manager Tony LaRussa. In afternoon, I spotted DeYoung exiting his limousine as he arrived at Riverwood golf course to practice at driving range. My friend Greg and I watched. (DeYoung hit big slice shots) DeYoung’s assistant called us over. We were excited about opportunity awaiting us until we were greeted by man saying, “Hey kids, why don’t you do me a favor and get the hell out of here!”
Honestly, he wasn't a bad drummer. He fit what was need of him, but the guy they have had since just before his passing, Todd Sucherman? Holly effballs--he's light years beyond John.
Timbill Corder True, Todd Sucherman has been picked as number one drummer by magazines in the past. He also produces instructional drumming videos. He's phenomenal!
They are all individually so talented. They still are but I long for the epic, classic songs they've put out as a group, They could put down some magical songs that sadly will never be made again. I'm so lucky to have real music being made for me my whole life unlike the music scene today where everything is fixed or manipulated to be perfect. Well they've taken the soul out of music with all it's imperfections. There's still good music out there, you just gotta look harder to find it. Man this concert is really taking me back. Thanks for posting unless you're a robot and if that's the case, I'll just say Meep - Zorp!! 🤖 🦫 🤔

I love Styx today and and back then...also I like how they play songs perfectly today but its cool to watch back then when they made a mistake here and there and not everything was the same as the show before
I saw them on this tour in Lexington,Ky. They were sooo good. Much better than I expected. I remember thinking after the show "I' can't see them again because they are never going to be able to top this tour". I never did see them again.
bluesrocker79 Excellent, sounds like they were a great live band. I used to hear stories about how bands like The Cars and Foreigner, who made great records, sucked live. I first saw Van Halen in '81 and they were never as good again so I know what you mean.
It's such a shame that no one appreciated the video footage we would want of this band in the future at the time. They we pretty much perfect live. Harmony's on stage are pretty much unmatched to this day.
three front men, one band, all styles of music and DYNAMICS....I love to hear the original music compositions of the many critics this band has. They were influential in my musical development. No Pro tools cut and paste either. Over and over til you got it right and creating a product that will stand "the test of time". It has. It is a shame they turned on each other. Funny that the band started with JY and JC being the focal points, DDY brought the signature elements and voice to the masses. Money in the bank beats critical acclaim and bankruptcy in any business.
I was fortunate enough to see you all in concert twice. First time was when the Roboto tour came out. The 2nd was Chastain Park Amphitheater, you were still together then too. Best concerts ever.
I was there for this (also saw Styx there for the 1st time back in '75 when they opened for KISS) Cap Center was the place to be back in the 70's early 80's all the big names toured and tix were cheap
I saw them at the Rosemont in 1997 near Chicago. I brought a girl who wasn't a huge fan. I remember her looking at me in amazement seeing how enthusiastic the crowd was.
Anytime you have three irreplaceable musician's in one band , you'll will eventually have trouble. If James young could find away to communicate with Dennis , I think Tommy would go along with a reunion , but I don't see it happening. ..so sad
The irony is that during an interview from 2018, JY claims that he harbors no ill-will, thar he has forgiven Dennis...yet his actions and body language suggest he has not. Come on guys, bury the hatchet. At least they better if/when they make Hall of Fame.
Here in 2024 ❤️…. who else??

More talent in their little finger than the vast majority of music artists combined today.
That's what your parents said about Vic Damone when they saw stuff like this.
That's exactly the phrase I used when I first discovered The Mars Volta.
I concur
I see this tired nonsense was floating around seven years ago.

This is when Tommy had short hair lol THIS is styx absolutely timeless music!!
At their absolute peak no doubt… ❤
I was 17 in 1981. It was a rock n roll extravaganza!
18 here at that time..👍
I went to this show! Springsteen at the Cap Centre was the best, but this concert was still great.
Styx were at their peak here. They won the gallup pole for most popular band in '81. Would've loved to seen them then. Great concert.
I first saw Van Halen in '81 and they were never as good again so I know what you mean.
so many better acts than styx.. Journey, Allman bros, Elton John, Foreigner,Boston, Tull, Yes, csn, Billy Joel, Marshall Tucker, Heart, Eagles,Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, etc..
and of course The Mighty Van Halen...
They actually won that poll in 1979.
I was there. Marvelous.
It's such a shame that no one appreciated the video footage we would want of this band in the future at the time. They we pretty much perfect live. Harmony's on stage are pretty much unmatched to this day.
This is what real music sounds like folks
Fantastic Fix great show This is Styx period
The quality of the picture responds perfectly to the quality of the music.
three front men, one band, all styles of music and DYNAMICS....I love to hear the original music compositions of the many critics this band has. Money in the bank beats critical acclaim and bankruptcy in any business.
that stuff didn't exist back then
I was fortunate enough to see you all in concert twice.
First time was when the Roboto tour came out.
The 2nd was Chastain Park Amphitheater, you were still together then too.
Best concerts ever.
I saw this tour in 81 and it brings back great memories. Watched it twice!
Thanks for the flashback!
I don't care what anyone says. Without Dennis De Young, the is no Styx.
Very true
Just quit already. Go see them live today. They're amazing.
rubicon1983 The modern incarnation of "Styx" is horrible. It is NOT Styx, it's JY, who holds the legal rights to the name.
Really? Have you seen them live recently? They are FAR from horrible. Are they Styx circa '78? NOPE. But they are still a damn good band.
not quite horrible but there's so much the he was responsible for. Most of there really big hits were his.
I was there for this (also saw Styx there for the 1st time back in '75 when they opened for KISS) Cap Center was the place to be back in the 70's early 80's all the big names toured and tix were cheap
I just found the video...Turns out, I was at that show in '81. Still have the ticket stub. Great show, great music, great decade...
dennis was definatly the ringmaster of the circus, but it takes all the animals to make it work
This is the definitive Styx tour and this professional but not overproduced video captures it perfectly
saw Styx in 1981 at Richfield Coleseium near Cleveland Ohio great show,
Great concert, thanks for the upload!!!!!!
Dennis Deyoung is the master showman!
STYX was damn lucky to have Tommy Shaw
They put out 4 records before they ever heard of Tommy Shaw.
@@jblcva Yes, and?
Listen to that crowd in the beginning! Damn
Robert Byrd ~ This venue was 20,000 seats... Unfortunately, it's no longer there anymore.
I saw them at the Rosemont in 1997 near Chicago. I brought a girl who wasn't a huge fan. I remember her looking at me in amazement seeing how enthusiastic the crowd was.
i was at this one.....it was great
i was about 12 rows from the front in the center...
Thanks!
This was the very first concert I ever went to. It was pretty good.
I saw them before this concert at the tour launch at the Rosemont Horizon.
JY should never sing...Never! Bring back Dennis!
@@jimilove7773 he fit the style of early Styx but really is mainly an embarrassment now.
Tommy inviting Strother Martin over to introduce “Foolin’ Yourself” was brilliant!
The guitars sound really good.
Damn, I had just gotten MY TX drivers license when I saw this tour, so damn great!!
