  • I made this to show how to access the motor on a Dyson DC44 for cleaning or motor replacement.
You will need a Torx driver bit to undo the screws.

I followed your instructions and my Dyson now works again. I couldn't remove the drive impeller - it's now plastic not metal - but with some tweezers I managed to grab all the hairs wrapped around it (took forever but worth it for the results) used some can air and WD40 and it's back to life. Thank you for your help :-)

To remove the drive impeller in my case I needed to unscrew a tiny silver screw with a torx key (T9) ! it wasn't a push fit at all like in this video. So be careful because if you break this part then you ll need to buy a new head brush or the whole motor case... Make sure you use a good quality torx key as well... and to pull the drive impeller after removing the screw, a paint can opener can be useful indeed.
    Thanks for the video.

Followed this which was a learning experience in itself... Some part were dirty but it did not fix problem... What fixed the problem was the power connectors which required q tip and alcohol... I'm back in business. Thanks though

Had problem with this attachment only so I knew something was restricting the rollers from spinning. It would spin for 1-3 seconds then stop. Same thing on hardwood as well. I had cleaned the hair out of the brush and then the visible prong when spin brush is removed. I thought that would fix it but nope. I just dealt with the issue and kept hitting the trigger again after it stopped. This did the job. It was clear as day the tightly wound up dog hair and human hair on the actual motor impeller was the problem. We were ready to buy a new vacuum and now its like we got our original vacuum (and inve$tment) back. Thank you Thank you

You don't need to remove the dust plates to disassemble. Just put a screwdriver on the non-motor side and lightly pull the plastic away so you can take away the clear housing (dust plates and all). Then remove the 5 or so screws holding the motor assembly together to access the motor area.

that last dust plate...I've been working on releasing the clips for an hour with varying flat screwdrivers, some flat pieces of drapery hardware...I'm just nicking plastic. I would love to see an actual video of someone unclipping the clear plastic piece from that back brush bar (the one with the tiny wheels)..I'm not sure how much force I can give it without breaking the sucker.

How did you get the dust plates off without breaking the 2 plastic hooks?

I’ve done this but it looks like I’ve broken the the part that sticks out. Do you know if I can buy that part?

Did all that. Clean as a whistle. Had the whole head apart, checked everything, but the damn brush still keeps stopping when I am using the thing. If I operate the machine on my lap, and try to stop the brush by hand, it is impossibe to stop it, as it is very strong. But the moment you put the machine to the floor, and start to use it, the brush stops. If you let go of the trigger and start it again, it re-starts. Sometime it will be fine and normal for a few seconds, but then it stops. Doesn't matter if it on carpet, or flat hard surface. Help!!

Nigel, I know your comment is two years old, but I'm replying in case the info helps another person.
Have you cleaned the filters regularly? You can also disassemble the cyclone for a thorough clean as well. I found a number of videos with clear instructions that I could follow, even though the model isn't exactly the same as mine.
The amount of fine dust that gathers in these machines is incredible. It's a shame that Dyson doesn't encourage a deep clean/tune up at least once a year. It will save your machine.

@@kellyd72177 The actual problem was the electrical connection on the floor head. Bad design means there is too much play, so as you draw back the power disconnects. I bought a new head and that cured it - for a while, then the same thing happened. So, I dumped it. These Dyson machines are ridiculously expensive. I have a Black and Decker Pet now. So much more efficient and versatile, more features, quieter, lighter and easier to use.

how did you remove the drive impeller? Looks like it is just pressed on, I don't want to damage it

Drive impeller is just a push fit but probably stuck. I used a small, flat blade screwdriver to work it loose. 👍
