- Tenant believed the power Outage he had caused this but I'm not so sure. This one might've been caused by something else but I got them back going

Common is always on normal closed side of contactor
Whenever I do any service, I check for resistive heating, ohms to ground, ohms across motors, capacitor, charge and terminal connections. 99% of the time its broke due to lack of proper maintenance. On a 14 y/o system like that, it was not a power problem, it might have pushed it over the edge, but did not cause the issue.
Code requires disconnect within 5 feet of the out door unit.
Wire as per the diagram on the chart. The unit is overcharged. Could have sold him on a disconnect for safety, plugged up that hole coming out, jmo.

What makes it overcharged?
@@AB_HVAC Unit can't get rid of the heat (Liq. vs. Sat.) so it jacks up the pressures or there is a problem inside. That's why head pressures came down after you cleaned the coils, or their still dirty. The tag calls for this to be on a TXV system and have a SC @ 10 deg. It's not to say it won't cool, but it will work harder and longer.
If you can, pay attention at your air flow. If its a 3 ton unit and its at 1200 CFM, its looking at 3.9 tons. If its closer to 800 CFM, you're delivering 2.6 tons. That is a good give away to keep hunting for issues. Dirty filter, bad or a TXV that needs some TLC.
When your superheat / subcooling and enthalpy numbers line up with what you have then you're in a good spot. You can use the 20 degree is good for me rule, but it just gets you in the gates and not to the plate. Otherwise, keep the vids coming and you're doing great work!
@user-cz8do7xl8u ah, I see what you mean. I guess it's the way I have to deal with it with these cheap landlords and property management. With homeowners, I like to be a bit more thorough and double-check things, but our workload is maybe...10% homeowners. For about 1-3 calls a week, I'm running for homeowners.
If "d.ISC" is displayed on the SC440 meter, the capacitor is not discharged completely. Good video Thank You...
That is the first time I've ever seen that before and I rarely take my needle noses or a screwdriver across them to discharge them

I would have sold them a disconnect and wire whip. It's a safety issue.

Putting the common wire on the bottom is how you emulate a single pole on a double pole contactor. It makes sense if you think about it. They did it correctly. Keep that in your pocket 😉.
I don't think they did it incorrectly, but it's not a heat pump, a double pole for it should be fine and work just the same right?
@@AB_HVAC theoretically, either one should be fine. But it came from the factory with a 1½ pole and there may be a reason. In this case it may not matter, but the way they wired it was exactly as it would be with a single (1½) pole. Sometimes you need the back feeding voltage through the common wire but I don't know if this unit cares 🤷.

I hate when they put the condensers on an angle, makes it look goofy. I don't think it matters which side of the contactor you put the leads. On single pole contractors they have 1 leg hot all the time anyway.
I know for heat pumps it's important for defrost control but other than that I've seen straight cool systems with single and double poles
