  • Join Gwinnett County Public Library as we chronicle a part of Georgia history - the story of Oscarville, Georgia where 1,100 black people once thrived. We discuss their amazing resilience in securing land, livelihoods, and financial success only 47 years out of slavery; and recount the tragedy of the racial expulsion of 1912 that displaced them, caused great loss, and the eventual emergence of Lake Lanier. This was really interesting, they don't teach about this stuff in school, at least not the ones I went to. We're taught that all the presidents were good, and that the civil war freed the slaves. Not about the leasing of convicts, not about Johnson rescinding the 40 acres and a mule, not about oscarville or other similar places. I knew there was stuff under the lake, just from hearsay, but mostly I hear about Cherokee remains and a supposed curse from them that haunts the area. I learned a lot here, thank you gentlemen!

During the 1800 and 1900’s there were over 20 black towns and communities burned down and destroyed by white folks. Tulsa Oklahoma 1921-the Black Wall Street had schools , churches, banks etc all destroyed because a white woman cried wolf. Rosewood GA, same situation. White woman cried wolf again and a mob killed and burned down the all black town. All that land that belonged to black folks stolen! I can go on but for days about stories like this. Not surprised this is this is swept under the rug. It speaks volumes about that bloodline.

So did I misunderstand what I've heard. It appears that all of the people left the town (Oscarville) first then with no concern for the town infrastructure, cemeteries and the like that remained intact the town was then flooded for the 4 points reasons that was mentioned.
What I've been hearing in Georgia was that people were living in the town and it was flooded while the people were actively living there. So did I misunderstand what was stated during this presentation that people were actually gone and not living in the town as I've been told.
    I'm confused. Thanks

There are 2 things that I took issue with in this video: 1) At around the 27:00 minute mark, he says that the landowners in Oscarville were 'paid' to leave, paid for their land...considering how these people were treated in the neighboring county, that didn't seem plausible. 2) When he begins discussing the Forsyth Scholarships being offered to descendants of the 1912 Lynchings, there should be a list of names of landowners, so people can search to find out if they were in fact descendants of those owners.
