    Hi Ped, I joined Octopus late last year and ordered a smart meter straight away. Nice chap came in February fitted new meters and gave me the home display to check what I was using. The gas part of the display worked straight away, it took about 3 weeks before the info was available to see on the website. The electric however was a different story. After waiting 2 weeks I emailed Octopus -nothing after 3 days. It's taken 4 phone calls, 6 emails and 10 weeks before both the website and display are now working. They still couldn't give any reason what the problem was. I'm hoping to change to Octopus go, but now I'm hoping it don't throw a spanner in the works. Just thought I would say that it may take a bit of time before the smart meters become - "Smart".
    Great videos and content as usual, very envious of that Zappi charger.

    Octopus Agile has been on the expensive side over the last few months due to a lack of supply (several reactors have been offline), but Octopus Go is a fantastic alternative giving 5 hours at 5 pence per KWh for EV charging, with the rest priced just below 14 pence per KWh

    Good choice!
    The Zappi is #1 on my list for the ability to change charging priorities so I can use all my solar surplus and have the flexibility to change the priorities depending on whether I'm home all day or need to get a charge in a certain time regardless. That is the killer feature especially when you are exporting nearly 1000kW per quarter for a measly amount.
    I am in Australia and the only concern I would have is how it would handle a hot day with the sun on it or would it need to be sheltered.
    On the lock on the fuse panel, Any industry especially mining has very strict protocols on isolations including a clamp that everyone puts their lock on so it could have 5 or 6 locks on it. Not nice when someone turns on a 1000 Hp machine with someone inside it.

    I’ve got a Zappie linked to solar and about to install battery storage as well. The Zappie also very cleverly disconnects the EV if there is a fault on the supply to your house. Otherwise your EV could be live with what appears the rest of your house disconnected!

    Nice Install. I was on Octopus Agile but went to Go -Faster as Agile prices have not been great lately (wholesale prices have got higher). Go faster is a bit easier to deal with as straightforward.I now get 4 hours between 8:30pm and 12:30am at 5p/kWh and that means I can also do washing etc atthat time not just charge the car ;-) Agile was getting too expensive as the daytime rate was so much higher :( Might be worth a look as with Go-Faster you can choose (to a certain extent)the times you want the cheap period to be and also how long can have 3h for 4.5p or 5 hours for 5.5p so its very good! I may go back to agile in the future as it was a great idea to try to balance the load on the grid and reflect the carbon intensity with higher prices.

    I've just changed from Agile to Go as Agile prices have been quite high for several months now... whereas with Octopus Go you are charged 5p per kwh between 12.30am and 4.30am which your Zappi can be set to. Once your smart meter is fitted you can change to Go immediately. Good luck👍

    Having your own private fuel station in the garage is every bloke’s dream. You didn’t mention the output of yours? My Taycan 4S+ charges at 7,4kW. Strangely on the same equipment, the TMXP charges at 8,4kW and the TM3P at a whopping 10.4kW!! Not sure why my Taycan charges so “slow”. 0-100% takes about 13-14hrs (as charge drops in the end), but in general, one doesn’t park with an empty battery, and 7-8hrs is the usual charge time to reach 100% so I guess overnight “full tank” is OK.
    Now you just got to get yourself a Taycan😉 The base RWD with the big battery goes a long way👌🏻

    I wanted the wallbox pulsar plus but couldn't find an olev installer and ended up with the Zappi. It is a really good charger and myenergi have great customer service too. Really glad I ended up getting one. One thing they could improve is allowing a timed charge greater than 8 hours. When I need to do an equalisation charge I could do with a longer time period.

    • @MrAdopado

    Solar would be a great move. Given time one imagines that the 'agile' tariff will change - it is all about when people are using electric - if everyone is charging cars at night (normally a low usage period) - will there still be a price advantage. I already have a Ground Source Heat Pump (installed in 2006) - this means I can't have an EV charger on our property (in the middle of nowhere!) as our power supply isn't big enough (We are limited to a 100 amps) - We also have a granny annex on site for my Mother in Law. Good Luck and will be interested to see developments.

    • @MrAdopado
      @MrAdopado 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well ... I would challenge you on the Zappi "over the air updates"! What a faff. That is the biggest negative of the Zappi owning experience IMHO. A true over the air update happens automatically without user intervention. With a Zappi you have to check that the software version on the Hub is up to date ... if not you have to press/hold/release appropriate button ... wait for download.... watch for colour change on LED. You then have to get the Hub to download the latest software for the Zappi itself by holding down the appropriate button on the Hub for x number of seconds then release ... the download can then take anything between a couple of minutes to half an hour ... watch for the change LED colours or flashing ... once that has been done you need to transfer the software from the Hub to the Zappi ... so you go to the Zappi itself and punch through about 5 different menus to get to where you tell it to download the new software from the Hub. Depending on the software version this can come in 2 downloads and takes several minutes ... after that the Zappi should restart. Job done but it's so complicated you have to go online to check the sequence each time you do it ... and they even changed the instructions. So, OTA updates are definitely more of a technical embarrassment than a selling point! Anyone who is not technically savvy would be totally lost.

    I was looking at a Cooper SE until I saw an Autocar article saying Mini are bringing out an electric JCW later in the year or early next year which sounds very interesting.Thought that could even tempt you away from the Tesla Pete although I expect JCWs range will not be much better than the Cooper Se especially with the JCW dial set to maximum performance.
    I am still waiting to see the electric mini pace car on Formula E.

    To say that Octopus or for that matter any energy supplier is “Green because they get all their energy from Green Sources” is a complete distortion of the reality. ALL of the energy that individual suppliers sell comes from the National Grid so it depends how that is divided at the point of delivery, Coal and Nuclear are still heavily weighted in the mix. At various times there is a bias towards ‘renewables’ but there is no 100% all year supply from these sources by any supplier.

    I’ve one of the original Mk1 Zappi’s along with a Harvi, Eddi, and hub. As I’ve also a Tesla Powerwall I find that the OctopusEnergy Go tariff is the best as on that I get four hours of energy at just 5 pence per kWh that’s enough even in the winter to charge my Powerwall which in turn runs the house. In my opinion the Agile tariff is best suited for those without battery back up or solar panels. You haven’t put your link to myenergi £50 discount ! Whoops 😬 should have said your OctopusEnergy £50 discount.

    I saw a video recently about EV usage in the USA, which responded to customer surveys concerning the tipping point for choosing EVs. In the video it suggested that the salient points were a guaranteed 320 miles and a price of $31000 max. The exchange rate puts that at £23800, and personally I would rather see close to 500 miles range, so I don't believe here in the UK that we are close to the tipping point yet. The price of the vehicle is going to be the biggest stumbling block, because we come back to the old argument about the variation in price depending on the country you are in.
    I was wondering if anyone else would like to suggest their own particular price/range requirements before they would consider changing?

    Is it clever enough (with appropriate wiring) to charge a car straight from PV when there's a power cut in the local distribution network?
    And does it have a "dumb" fail-safe mode. Say if the hub dies or the software suffers from the equivalent of a "blue screen of death"?
    I've worked in I.T. for 40 years and I'm extremely wary of new software.

    Unless you have an EV all the time I should think you may end up just using it to charge when you need to charge rather than worrying about setting up set economic charging regimes. If you are coordinating sources of power generation and using clever coordinated tariffs then the Zappi is a great tool but in practice all EVs have the capability to time their charging so a basic box is all many people will need. Even with the grant it's not cheap! (I know, I've got one too.)

    1)(1:55 sec) Canisters of biscuits and cake and the electrician didn't go for them....what's his problem ?
    2) (14:06 sec) In Canada (Québec) electricity costs (0.0427 cents Cad kwh) or (0.026p UK/kwh) ! I understand the folks (who, by the way, drive on the wrong side of the road.......I thought I'd slip that in😉)....in the UK you pay something like 18.4p/kwh ! ! Wow ! That is expensive !
    3) (14:19 sec) Solar panels and UK (oxymoronic)...........that's like saying sun with UK in the same sentence.........I heard that in the UK it's either cloudy, covered, misty, foggy or rainy but sunny ? Free electricity ! in the UK ? That was certainly funny.....well I found it funny !
    And finally, in all seriousness, your electricity tariffs are unbelievably complicated and costly as hell ! Here (Québec, Canada) an electrician will install an EV charging station pedestal for outside parking or a wall unit in a garage or shed or carport. Most have cellphone connection but only for time schedules (charge status, time to start and time left) You just plug in the car and that's it ! It's the same tariff all day/night. Some communities offer rebates for a residential installations.

    What is typically the cost of installing a car charging point?

    • @kevy427
      @kevy427 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lots of variables to consider so costs do vary; cable run from the charger to the board, whether any trenching is needed, type of cable used (SWA, NYY-J, T&E) depending on the environment, earthing system (although that doesn't affect the Zappi), main cut-out fuse rating, if there are any spare ways on the distribution board (DB), does the existing DB need upgrading to suit, existing electrical load in the property...so you could be looking at a couple of hours to a day to install
      Then there's the charger you choose as there are so many on the market, each with their good and bad points. The ones offered by the big utility companies aren't particularly good, neither are those which sound like a posh watch. Look for one with built-in PEN fault detection as that means there's no need for an earth rod to be installed which adds an additional expense along with the risk of hitting underground services when it's being installed
      A pretty vague answer for you but under £1000 will get a good charger and its installation
