  • Jesse Harris started his filmmaking career early, writing and directing his first feature when he was 17. He opted against college and used the money to fund his feature that he wrote and directed, which was eventually picked up for US theatrical distribution and by HBO Europe.
In 2007, to support other young filmmakers, Jesse founded NFFTY (National Film Festival for Talented Youth), which has grown into the largest and most prestigious youth film festival in the world. Jesse put his filmmaking career on hold for several years to support other young directors and build a premier showcase for aspiring directors.
Variety named Jesse one of 25 talents who transformed youth entertainment and was named one of City Arts Magazine's Top 50 Culture Makers. His feature was shortlisted for the 2004 Independent Spirit Awards 'Someone to Watch' Award and was one of 20 features invited to the 2004 IFP New York Film Market. Jesse's recently been named a Global Shaper, an initiative of the World Economic Forum, built around young entrepreneurs and do-gooders.
Jesse returned to filmmaking in the commercial world, now bringing years of experience crafting beautiful stories for brands. His commercial work has been seen on TV around the world, working with clients such as Volvo, Microsoft, Disney and more.
His 2018 short film, Wind in the Night was one of seven films selected for the 2019 Prix SNCF du Polar in France and picked up for distribution in France, Asia, UK and USA. The film was a proof of concept for his next feature, Borrego (available January 14, 2022).

    Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

Stop setting limitations by putting your future in the hands of big companies. Take your time, save up, distribute your film using the internet, get a buzz and repeat until you get noticed by the big companies you are chasing.

And where do you get the money for the first film? Unless you're talking about shooting something for $10,000. But even that for a normal artist will take a while to save up.

Lots of studios and distributers are more than willing to take your idea and give next to nothing in return. This is what's killing the industry today. Why be creative when you make nothing out of it?

The problem is a lot of artists have enough trouble maintaining roofs over their heads, let alone financing films. This is why people shouldn’t be too critical of independent cinema. A filmmaker could write a brilliant script, but if they can’t get professional actors, the film isn’t going to be very compelling. If a brilliant concerto is played by amateur musicians, it obviously will sound very different.

I agree. However, you could also think smart and write/make a movie with your limitations in mind, resulting in a better quality, instead of writing/making an overly ambitious movie that will be perceived very low quality because if you had limited resources.

I’m learning that it’s so many ways to raise funds for your film. A McDonalds employee can get with his co-workers and friends and shoot a film with little to no money. A good strategy for them is to raise money by washing cars all summer to purchase a camera. Once everyone put their heads together and get on the same page, they’ll eventually be able to quit their jobs at McDonalds.

A few of the difficulties he describes sound like the endeavors of being an employee, or contractor vs being an entrepreneur.
But he also describes the process as being such a hurdle, but yeah generally, there is a lot of money at stake with no guarantee of financial gains. Actually quite the opposite.

How can a story sell a film with no big names? Because at the end of the day, no one remembers the production quality but the characters, their journey and the relativity to these characters and what they represent... I mean, that’s how up and coming can be noticed right?

    • @whengrapespop5728
      @whengrapespop5728 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

My experience is that production quality can affect how invested you are in the story. I definitely remember production quality, but that’s perhaps because I work with film. How I see it, think smart while writing - keep your limitations in mind while creating a story. This way you can end up with a better production quality, perhaps better acting and less economical dependency, instead of writing an overly ambitious movie that will take harm from your limited resources. Good Will Hunting is a good example - although they had $10 million and a famous actor, they chose locations that even a school production could acquire. It is considered one of the best movies of the 90’s, and it’s not because of Robin Williams. Grossed $225 million during its theatrical run.

@@whengrapespop5728 your point is valid but most of the time our audiences are non filmmakers and outrightly they’re only excited about production quality during the movie but afterwards, in their everyday lives, the story is all they see and hear.

I got the best way to raise money for a film I want to make “ Bog Skies” a sci fi series. My way is this. I’m going to do a call to anyone who wants to be in the movie and the deal is they pay to be in the movie as an extra or a small part as for the leading roles and support that’s up in the air, I am considering just pic from the pool or charge more per role and time exposure . The pay is everyone gets a cut. I of course get 51 % since I wrote it and will direct it as where ever all the other porostions are the rest get split by percentage since I will have dominion over all aspects possible such as marketing and profits from action figures and clothing and so on cast like extras will be broken up into blocks and share the remainder of the 49% of profits from everything after expenses and cost are deducted. For new or non actors it will be needed exposure if you think about it. And one thing I will make mandatory is anyone being casted must do so personally. No agents allowed. Cut that out of the equation. No brokers no scouts no clubs. Individual applications individual checks deposited, none of that taking cuts out of actors pockets or point system. A lot of it will be done with FX so no need for months or years on a set so everyone’s times free to go prospect and venture . Yep. That’s it. Anyone can do it this way and I mean anyone even micro studio by someone with a script and working out a closet under their stairs with green screens . If anyone tries it I wish you luck.
