Thank you for this interview. Gary Goldstein is one of my favorites among your guests. There's so much wisdom he imparted in this short clip. The importance of patience, persistence, humility, networking, openness, persuasion, asking the right questions, and being also strategic at the same time. I've heard a lot of stories from writers where they get the highest praises almost perfect descriptions of their scripts from the readers/producers only to get rejected in the end. I think it's not a bad idea to ask "why?" after a rejection because that's the only way to know how to improve your script or change your strategy in pitching. Can't wait to see the full version of this interview!

I just today started to act on an idea that I was unsure and nervous about pursuing for a Netflix type series, this has made me realise how tough it is to see your idea through. Ground zero is where I am starting at present but I believe it is possible to make a connection with someone who believes in your idea as much as you do.

What a lovely man! I love his simple and very hopeful message spoken to us and not at us.
The KEY thing he said is to want a MUTUAL relationship with someone you reach out to. The biggest turn-off is when someone just wants, wants, wants from someone and doesn't offer anything in return. "I want to pitch to you," "I want your contacts," "I want your financing." These people are so transparent and it's so tacky. Honestly, when Gary was talking about how to find someone that you need, then try to cultivate a relationship... I was irritated because it's, again, ONLY reaching out to someone because they can do something for you. However, when he said "mutual" relationship, then it's a lot better.
I am trying to get my feature into Netflix, this is huge advice from a smart man. Thank you!

He helps me understand why black people have struggled in Hollywood and probably always will. How many white execs are relaxed enough to casually chat and befriend a random contact who just happens to be black? Maybe 1in 50?

Nice, we hope you are able to put some of this into practical use.
I think the possibility of getting a screenplay read by a top producer has the same probabilities as making it as a full-time TH-camr. You can have talent, you can have good content, you can have Charisma, but unless you have "the look" and/or connections you're going to drown in the sea of oversaturation in the market.
There is a tiny percentage of people who beat these odds, but for the average person who is moderately talented and is serious and dedicated about making it on these types of platforms, it is an uphill battle on a greased slope.
Ironically there are those who are able to pay their way or hack their way to the top but have no intentions of producing good content get surpassed those with wholesome motivations.
I want to believe in integrity, persistence, and relationship building, I just think it's unfortunately in the minority of ways that people are making it nowadays.
hello i have a question i would like to make a movie about flyboarding (watersport ) !!!!! if i made a movie at my own expense with my own camera how do i you sent the movie file to this company ? because with a normal e-mail you can only sent up to 100 mb . And how can you know if this is company or person can be trusted because it's not difficult to steal someone's movie

well, then do the next best thing you can. make a story you can just do yourself. if you don't want to shoot for the moon, just chop down a tree.
@@uglystupidloser I wrote a pretty cool and scary horror spec titled "Contemporary Death" which brings out a new version of the grim reaper in a more ambitious kind of slasher experience, kind of how I've been pitching it without giving away any story details... I put out a teaser to the script on twitter and it's doing really well, a lot of intrigue, everyone so far really likes the title and concept. I feel the timing is perfect for it and the genre has never seen anything quite like it. I hope to pitch it to the studios/ networks next year, I'm still preparing and refining the script...

If you're not in LA, and somewhere else in the world, what is one to do?
I see a problem here: probably now a boatload of people are doing these things, contacting people in the business to try to establish relationships that could get a foot in the door. So how do we get noticed, in this swarm of people?
That’s our job. Trying to figure out our own way of doing this.
Have a good story and a memorable personality
But don't a lot of those people get a million people trying to pitch ideas to them
Go full Trojan horse into a comicbook company, put your storyboard on paper and disguise it as a comicbook. Don’t forget to promote it as “acclaimed” and destroy the company altogether.
Or just wait for the executives to high on drug the pitch your idea. Let me remind you, there’s a series about a woman lamenting that her husband’s rod doesn’t fit into her clamp

you need to make a script first, and then see if you can the right producer. and when i say the "right producer", i mean the "right buyer".
because if they can use your script to help themselves move forward in their own career, they will.
and different producers will prefer different ideas to invest in.
most people use an agent, especially if they don't already have connections. and most people won't even look at your script without an agent.
they help sell your script. they have an idea of how your script might be useful to certain producers, and it is their job to reach out to producers or studios who might be interested.
a good story won't be a guarantee. but it is a start.
and i don't know if i would pitch your idea with "it's a story nobody has heard or and probably never will"... because people probably hear that thousands of times.
What is the movie he sold to Spielberg?
My deduction from listening to him carefully is that Spielberg showed interest in buying the script but eventually the exchange did not happen or at least production did not happen. He would have said more if it did. Anyway, he had a clear connection through the friend that gave Spielberg the script, which does not match a lot of the over-simplified emotional stuff he said. I liked the first part though... it is possible, but after that he is just saying stuff that sounds good. You cannot expect to reach out to someone from LinkedIn and pretend that and trick them that you are their new-found friend so you can pitch a script. You can only be honest and nice and humble about yourself in whatever you do when you don't have a connection with the people
How old is too old for screenplay writers to succeed?
i think the producers don't care about your age. they care if they can make money off of you.
so, instead of asking yourself if it is too late, maybe you can ask yourself what you need to do to get there.

I wouldn't have high hopes for reaching out to key people on LinkedIn...most messages from unknowns won't get replies, and prominent industry shakers, especially the decision-makers won't accept or respond to messages from outside their network, they get them ALL the time,. If you get a reply that would be a blessing
