  • Here is the third part of my LEGO Technic 42131 CAT D11 Bulldozer review. I thought it would be nice to compare it with two other LEGO Technic bulldozers, the classic 8275 Bulldozer which was the first Power Functions set ever and was also designed by Markus Kossmann, and a custom B model of 42100, the Liebherr PR 776 Dozer designed by Eric Trax!

      @@richardjulien1329 it was definitely the first Technic set with PF. There were other sets released in 2007 with PF components like the Monster Dino or the Ferris Wheel. According to the sources I found they were released in the same month, so in general the dozer is referred as the first one with the full range of components available at that point.

    Thanks not only for the comparison, but for shedding some light on why the CAT takes forever to shift the gearbox! It's still very bad for playability, but now I can at least appreciate the thought and engineering that did go into it!

    From a playability perspective, I greatly prefer a gearbox over simultaneous control. It makes you think just how complex the setup inside is, and how gearboxes in real life work!

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Well in my opinion that does not add to the playability side. Certainly a nice education aspect and makes the building experience more interesting, but from a playability perspective the fact that you need to wait long seconds every single time until something happens becomes annoying pretty quickly.

    Damn it, I should have bought a second Liebherr yesterday when it was 37% off on amazon, but I usually avoid to get 2 of the same sets. My favorite among these 3 is definitely 8275. Still remember when I bought this set after my dark ages and it blew my mind cause I didn't have any motorized sets before that. The thing I like most is you just place the batteries in, turn it on and it's good to go... Plus it's fun to drive on laminate floors. With a second remote it can both drive and use the blade/ripper simultaneously. And this is how I would have liked the CAT to work as well. What a pity.
    Thanks for the comparison video. As always awesome content, Balázs.

      8043 that followed a few years later was also pretty fantastic, especially after the updates from Lego (instructions needed to be updated and the PF actuators needed replacing, which they did for free) - I still have it and man it's such a fun set, both A and B model.

      @@EricTrax Great work indeed! Putting all the features in a much smaller bulldozer than the official Cat one, using majority of the parts from the A model is an awesome feat! I'm honestly disappointed that the huge Cat only has one hub and four motors but I guess it would have been insanely expensive with more tech.

    I just finished building the D11 ... you're right - the building experience is AWESOME! I am so impressed with the newest generation of Lego Technic. This was my first Lego build in almost 30 years, not counting the little kits for my kids. I also have the Liebherr 9800, still in the box, and will be building it over the winter, as well as the other Control+ models [Mercedes Trials Truck, Volvo AH60, and Xtreme Off-Roader]. The building experience and first go at the app [I bought the latter 3 kits after completing Step 194 on the D11, but well before I finished construction].
    Tonight I finished the D11, and immediately calibrated it and started dozing things in my living room. It's fantastic! I don't mind not using multiple things at once, and am used to the primary controls from farm equipment I used as a teenager. I love the scale of the D11, which allows for a lot of detail, which I also love. So much fun!!! I plan to keep the Liebherr 9800 as an excavator so I can use the D11 and the 9800 in conjunction with the Volvo, to mess with my kids' Lego :D

    The 8258, 8275 and 8043 were the holy trinity for me in that era up until 2012, so you can really call them the heros of 2000-2010 period. They were sets I actually played with, A LOT, and were not display models. 8110, 9398 were also playable, but not as much, probably due to some imperfections in their designs. Clearly the 8275 cannot fairly compete with the post 2010 sets, as it belongs to a different Technic era (which seems to be updated every 10 years)

    I feel like people will start making Mocs for the CAT soon so I’ll take that if I could. It also looks nicer in my opinion. There’s no point in buying something you don’t like the design of just because it has more motors.

    Excellent comparison RacingBrick, thank you! I am surprised though that there's no mention of 8043's B model, which is a bulldozer. I built it once and it was SUPER fun. Nimble, easy to pick up stuff and push stuff, and unlike the A model, which needed a switch, its functions could be used at the same time! Not quite as big, nor did it have as many functions as 8275, but still, very fun!
