LEGO Technic Cat D11 Bulldozer 42131 Reviewed!

  • The LEGO Technic Cat D11T Bulldozer is some of Markus Kossmann's best work, containing amazing mechanisms, incredible engineering, perfect aesthetics, and more! That being said, is it really worth $450? Personally, I have tons of nostalgia for the original, 2007 power functions bulldozer. This set blew me away in terms of its size. I did not expect it to be so massive! On top of that, it contains an advanced gearbox, which is definitely an upgrade over the 2007 one.

    I work for a Caterpillar Dealership and in the actual machine, the blade lift IS slow, so any modification to speed it up would make it not realistic. The actual machine does have a blade safety feature to quick drop it, should an emergency arise whereby the operator need to stop the machine quickly.

      Float? The blade on any dozer I've ever ran moves faster than this p.o.s. overpriced Lego version.

    It would be nice if the gearbox could engage multiple functions at once like on some other sets, and it would also be better if the motors drove the sprocket gear instead of the rear idler.

    Terrific review. Comprehensive. First review I’ve seen showing the pushing power of the dozer with sand. It was surprisingly impressive. Looks wise you’re right the designer has nailed it. The Leibherr actually looks small in comparison. But …….£419 is too much.

    If you wished that the track tension knob was motorized, you can attach the medium angular motor from the Lego mindstorms 51515 set. You can remove technic hub from the lego technic bulldozer and attach the lego mindstorms Robot Inventor hub so you can have more ports to connect the motors. 0:45

    Well the rippers do technically have a tilt it's primarily there just to keep the ripper assembly vertical at various depths so I can see why they skipped it in favor of the ladder

    i love my 42131. aside for some track tensioning issues/tracks coming off, that is. there seems to be a sweet spot for the tensioning that is tricky to nail down without spending more time fussing with the tensioner than the actual set. i think they optimized the blade lift/lower speed just a bit. still slow, but maybe not quite a snails pace.

    New Hub Firmware for CAT control with Lego 88010 remote in Eurobricksforum unter „42131 - CAT D11 Bulldozer“
    The idea with LED function indicator is clever.
    Remote's +/- buttons to directly control the treads. The red buttons control the active function. Pressing the green button cycles through the four functions, and the remote's LED indicates which one is active:
    * Blue: blade lift
    * Green: ripper
    * Yellow: ladder
    * Red: blade tilt
    * White: function switching in progress

    Hi Unbrickme!
    Firstly, is there enough space to turn the gearbox into a 6 functions gearbox, so that ripper tilting ( to add ) and track tensioning can be RC?
    Secondly, once you will be done moding the cat, would you mind sharing it? I think a lot us would be interested by it ^^
    Thirdly, nice review, thanks!
    Fourthly, don't you think for moding it that buying 2 more black linear actuator would be worth it?

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think there’s enough space in the bulldozer for a 6 function gearbox. Once I’m done modding the bulldozer to have 7 motors and ripper tilt, I will definitely make free instructions. Yes, I think getting two more linear actuators is worth it. Shouldn’t be too expensive on bricklink

    the 42131 is not entirely 1:1 scale. it has 12 roadwheels. the real d11 has 16. the ripper looks fragile and half done. they could have made an impact ripper. it was heavier and longer. and the very large and high volume yellow blade u see inside the manual is a coal blade. the 42131 has a normal blade.

    I have a great question for you Unbrickme. I was going through the parts inventory as I was taking this bulldozer apart. I counted the number of the black connector pins (connector peg w friction).
    I got 706 pins, but the inventory has these split into 2 groups with different part numbers. It shows 146 of part 4121715 and 561 of part 6279875. What is the difference between these? Brickset shows them with different design numbers 2780 and 61332 respectively. If there is a difference, what is it and where were they used in the bulldozer that one was used and not the other?

    • @TinkeringJohn
      @TinkeringJohn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      UPDATE: I checked with a magnifying glass and saw the pins are marked 61332. I could not find any of the 2780's in my set. I see from the parts lists in the manuals of both the 10179 and 75192 Millenium Falcons that they both use the 2780 pins. I checked them and found my 10179 uses the 2780 pins and my 75192 uses the 61332 pins. The 61332 pins have this number marked on them, but the 2780's do not have any markings. Lego may not be making the 2780's anymore and using up a surplus of them, so some sets may have either type despite what the parts list says.

    this set is build on the opposite on how a real track type tractor actually is. the drive wheels were supposed to be up not down. and ALL those motors should have been shielded and protected from debris. also the power source is splitted into 4. 4 motors using 6 batteries. that is too much.

    1/10 rating for me.... The track broke at the very end

      just because of that? This set isn't meant to be used in an outdoor environment, and even outdoors that happens pretty rarely

    The biggest con of all: not power functions

      Power functions motors does not include an internal rotation sensor so you would have to add a stepper mechanism, and stepper mechanisms can get unreliable over time because they can get out of sync.
