My understanding is that the species itself is nowhere near endangered, but the ability to export them is extremely limited - perhaps just as scientific exchanges. In any case there is already a steady number outside of Australia where the trade is not illegal. I do understand that due to their monogamous breeding, that it's extremely hard to breed them in captivity.

I know declaring items is a hassle but it does help from spreading diseases that certain countries dont have. I remember i had to throw away flowers from Ensenada that i took a cruise too and i thought it was outrageous cause literally its right by the us board but they were not playing so it was what it was and i was able to keep my wines and olive oils so i was happy with that. I do feel aussie is making the fine too low. All the items they needed to throw away for those two ladies was crazy even if they dont think its food and is for medical reasons they should have been fine a lot more. I mean i just dont understand why they would know the rules spend all that money just to get caught and it destroyed. So not only are u paying for the food u are paying for a fine and the worse thing ever is the food waste which could have been prevented.

Maybe Australia should start getting more strict with repeat offenders since Australia's eco-system is so unique and any biosecurity threats could cost Australia millions in. ...as for the food concealments .. penalties need to be severe enough to convince perpetrators that it's not a joke, and that the damage they could cause to Australia is incredibly far reaching. The "No speak English" is also a bit sus, so translators should be available to sort that one out. How could they NOT know about restrictions??? Fines by themselves do not seem to be a sufficient deterrent .... maybe jail terms and cancellation of visas need to be included.

I was offered the options of either paying to have it treated (and then I could keep it), or else have it confiscated. I opted to let them keep it. They said they were going to keep it to use it training what to look for. It’s devastating to think one small thing like that undeclared could be behind the trees in Hyde Park in WA having to be cut down.

Wow Australia! Why wouldn’t you have any food in your country to feed all these hungry, starving people? And why would anyone want to visit such a country? People have to pack a whole grocery store in their bags! 😂😂😂

What is with all excess baggage of food?? What’s wrong with these people? Nowadays, you may buy items online or purchase at an ethnic market! They all lie. Incredibly low to blame the children…. Raise fines!
I’m just shocked by all that food. Ridiculous and gross.

The kids packed a bunch of fruits neatly and put in the luggage? Even if that insane explanation were true...the parents are still more than responsible. You're responsible for your kids lol.

NO EXCUSE!! Their irresponsible behavior of packing items that are clearly illegal has no excuse! These people are adults and should be able to read the laws and rules of each country they travel to! The purposefully denied it because they only care about their selfish interests and not about the safety of the country they are visiting! These people are disgusting and so is their attitude! 👎

Poor animals, how do people expect them to survive the journey with no water or food and barely any oxygen?? It was so sad to hear they mate for life, that means if they are separated while being sent away, they could be alone for the rest of their lives.

WHY do people bring home-made food that they could be making at their destination??? The fines are ridiculously low. If the fines were higher and travel bans imposed word of mouth would spread.
