      The original orchestral version by the Boston Pops under Fiedler is the definitive version of the piece.

    As a bass clarinetist, I approve - as long as there are only two bassoons and I get to play the cues for the third part.

      Hah! We had a bassoon, me, a bass clarinet and a baritone sax. We were good and we got it in sync, but the sonority was so hellish the director made me play the top line of the trio as a solo. No pressure, guys . . .

    We were going to play this for a concert but it got cancelled so we could have more time to prepare for UIL (Texas’s music, fine arts, and athletics tests and competitions are done at most the state level with UIL) and I thought this was hell as a clarinet. After 3 months of being in the top band with challenging college level music we weren’t supposed to be playing but we’re playing nonetheless because of our band director wanting to be the best in Texas, I no longer see this as hell but a fun piece that is a certified hood classic.

      This is an absolute classic. I remember playing it 50 years ago in my high school band (first bassoon). It's not on the same order of art music as Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, which the Marines also play perfectly and with the most moving gravity -- but the American Salute is very quirky compositionally and lies in that gray area between pops music and a 20th century American art idiom that owes its soul to Copland. The Marine Band, as I said, has both the weight and the uncanny precision to give it this stirring and slightly insane rendering.
      I have not heard it often between back then and now. Listening to it fully 50 years since I have played it, something else is impressing me about it. There is a fever-dream quality to it in places, or so I imagine, that seems a response to a spirit of war and the fervor of patriotism mobilized to meet it. As it is, this work and Copland's fanfare were both composed in 1942, shortly after America entered WWII, as responses to the challenge. And of course the song the variations are based on in this piece is the quintessential Northern melody associated with the American Civil War, our own national historic nightmare.
      Just musing. This is December 6, 2016. We are into a new national experiment with uncertain prospects and a lot of trepidation. We have to pack up and bring our traditions, our art, our music, our lessons learned or forgotten. This piece, I think, will go into the satchel.

    Why at 1:59 is that mad sus chord in the horns from the original orchestra score not in this arrangement?

    • @shaunsalem
      @shaunsalem 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TimTheToolMan10 It’s not a sus chord. In the orchestral version, the Eb Chord is followed by an Emin Chord 3 measures in front of H. We just made this correction in the band arrangement we’re playing. It’s simple. Make all Ebs and Bbs natural three measures in front of H (except the last two pick up notes into H) and you’ve now got the orchestral version.
