Hi Dan I was really hoping to hear more about how the Z650 compares to your CB650R - if you had to choose again, stock for stock, which one would be the best choice for you and why?
@@feelthaflo82 Hey, as tempting as it is, I don't want every video to become a comparison to my bike. I like to test ride other bikes and just talk about them and what makes them good and/or bad. That being said, I may well do a comparison video between the CB650R, MT07, Z650 and SV650. If I had to buy again today, I'd buy the same bike. As for why, I'd probably need to do a video about that. Had mine two months and 2000 miles. Engine pulls strongly right across the rev range. Gearbox extremely precise. Superlight slipper assist clutch. Very light, accurate handling - helped by mass centralisation. Comfortable seat and riding position (very slight lean forward). Strong brakes. Dash extremely clear and informative. Proper, direct riding experience with a bit of raw edge that keeps you connected and involved. Kawasaki have got this one right.
@@ellom8 I got one too, everything he said I agree with too. The torque on this bike with wide open throttle feels incredible. Forgiving if need be but can be enough to get your blood going. It looks awesome too everyone loves the way it looks when I'm at a light
If you push and hold the right button, the TFT will go inverse and be even better to see in the daytime. Also, you can turn the flashing off for gear indication. They set it at 4k RPM because that's what they recommend to stay below for the first phase of break-in. (but you can also set it to flash at whichever rev you want)
Tuned versions of this parallel twin Kawasaki 650 engine powered many highly competitive racebikes in the American Flat Track series. They endured serious high rpm abuse and sounded fantastic while doing it!
Got one. Best feature after the engine - power right across the rev range - and super light, agile handling is how manageable and easy to live with the bike is day to day - it's never annoying.

Had my 2020 z650 about 4 months now, done 860ish miles on it. Bloody love it. I’m around 5ft1 and it’s great bike for anyone my size. I had z750 before which is 100lbs heavier than the new z650... an extra 100lbs is big amount when you can only just get your toe down 🙈 so to lose that weight has been fantastic. Really happy with it and it hasn’t missed a beat so far 👍👍
As a modern looking bike i admit that is has a nice design, I’m more into classic looks but this one looks nice. The TFT reminds me of the ones used on the triumphs, sounds nice and it looks to be more userfriendy than the MT07 when you get excited with the throttle.

Been riding for over 40 years, owned everything from 125's to 1100's. My 2017 Z650 is the most fun bike that I have owned. At 66 years old, I don't need a 700lb cruiser or a full liter sportbike. I stay off the main highways, have a lot of fun on secondary highways & backroads. Yes, the OEM tires suck, can't wait to put on a set of Pirellis.
Thanks for mentioning the throttle snatchiness in lower gear at lower speeds and the some what abrupt on off throttle. This is my pet peeve and what I am looking for in reviews. Most reviewers seem to miss this yet when I go on a test ride there it is. Also the front end diving and brake grabbing and how the suspension fairs with bumpy roads. Good details please keep it up.
My driving school has a pre-facelift Z650. Coming from a CB125R I was surprised how much louder it is and it showed me how bad 125cc bikes actually sound... But the ca. 60 minutes of driving I've done with it have left a good impression. Though I needed a couple of minutes to get used to my bike afterwards. When I got on my CB125 afterwards I almost thought something was broken (the clutch on it grips unbelievably late, compared to the Z650), because it wouldn't move despite me twisting the throttle, then I realized that the clutch on my bike is completely different.
I tried the older version. The engine is exactly how you described it being "punchy" which made it a huge amount of fun and bought out the holligan in me. I did find in town at slower speeds it was a bit "jerky" though tbh. Good bike though and I would say its a very good price in my opinion. Especially with it being so upto date. Good work👍🍻
The only reason I mentioned price is because it's £350 less than the CB650R in this country, which has far superior suspension, brakes and about 20bhp more. It's not a bad bike but in a sector with the MT07 and the SV650 (which is cheaper) I feel the Z650 might get overlooked.

This bike was a real contender for me but I ended up with a CB650R and I'm pretty happy with the Honda but had the Honda not been available. I wouldn't have had any issues riding the Kawi.
Passed my test on one of these yesterday, while they’re cool bikes for learning on, I wouldn’t want to own one. They’re just decent, reliable, low spec mile munchers.
@@Englishbikerdan definitely true, I just feel like most people that can afford this can also afford one of a number of bikes which are better. But yeah, different strokes for different folks.
Btw I finally got my CB650R. I can relate when you said you like where the indicators are located. Have to say on the Honda the position is a bit awkward compared to other bikes.
John Innes I was also considering the Suzuki SV 650 but this Kawasaki Z650 looks great and the tft is very nice. Here in SW France the SV 650 is a little cheaper than the Kawasaki and the Yamaha Mt 07. The Honda CB650R is a fair bit more expensive. The SV 650 is a little heavier and perhaps needs an update although a lot people still love the traditional styling of the SV. There are some rumours that a new Suzuki SV 650 parallel twin is in the design stage! Pity Dan has not yet reviewed the SV 650. I think he is too attached to his Honda!
I own the sv650x with OEM SV650 handlebars. I've had lessons in both the CB650R and z650. I by far prefer the sv650x. The z650 feels a little bit smaller & cramped. I'm 184cm. For some reason the grip on the z650 feels worse as well and a bit of a spongy suspension. The clutch on the z650 is phenomenal though. Just perfect. Engine sound is somewhat boring. Low speed maneuvers are great on this machine, except for the snatchy on-off throttle The CB650R is overall a great bike. It's just that the clutch is a little heavier and the powerband comes a little bit later in the RPM's. It feels very planted in corners and at the same time agile. The cb650r is a little more boring as in, you can't fully push the bike & feel extremely confident doing so. Although that online 4 exhaust note is very nice. Comfort is amazing. Low speed maneuvers are a little harder. The sv650x has a low down powerful pull, very nice engine sound even with OEM exhaust. Feels planted in corners and has that goldilock zone of street cornering comfort. Soft suspension in a good way and the powerband seems to pull all the way to 8500RPM. The sv650x is able to be pushed hard and you'll love it. It's just the right amount of power to become very confident with the bike & ride a little bit aggressive. Low speed maneuvers are a bit of a middle of the road between z650 & CB650R but the Low RPM assist works wonders for u turns and such.
Waikit Choi Thank you for your reply. Nice to read your honest comments regarding all three bikes. The SV 650 certainly takes a lot of beating. Lovely engine sound with the stock exhaust, good torque throughout the entire rev range at an affordable price. Ride Safe!
I would suggest a little bigger windscreen for this bike because the stock one doesn't provide good wind protection at speeds higher than 100km/h. Mine is a 2019 tourer version and it's surely a nice bike. Nothing much but it is a good choice for new riders. If you're taller than 182cm and if you ride long distances you should go for a bigger bike. Sometimes I feel fatigue in lower legs becasue of such tight ergonomic.
Thank you for the great review😁👍🏻, best one I've seen on this bike. I am looking into getting my motorcycle licence in a month or so, and I really like the styling of the Z650. In Australia the Z650 is learner approved bike 😅
Indian Village roads are like this .Trees and trees I usually love to ride on my Zx10r with Racefit silencer... and this z650 is good really good i drive the full faring body nice ...
Looks like it was worth the trip. Looking forward to whatever else you can get a ride on. I prefer the looks of the honda, the kawasaki has a very busy look.
I am thinking about getting the A2 restricted version as my first motorcycle to practice my riding skills. I hope it's not going to be too powerful for myself, but it's not like i am going to be silly on it anyways.
I used to have an ER6 which has the same engine, and while I found the performance really good, I found the engine note horrible. It needs the cross plane crank and I don’t know why Kawasaki don’t change it.
I think because it sells really well as it is. Why spend all that money money developing a new cross plane engine if what they have is already popular? Doesn't make business sense until sales start falling at least.
@@mrnicktoyou Also look at the Honda 500 range of bikes. They sell really well but have that 180 degree crank. I do agree with you though, it would be great if they all had 270 cranks. Maybe one day! Thanks for watching!
@@Englishbikerdan I am very glad you didn’t. I often end up watching old videos without realising because I am interested in the bikes. I don’t buy new as I can’t afford them.
Got my license on this beauty. Before starting my license I never rode a bike. Very forgiving, in my opinion. My fear is telling me to buy a smaller one, around 300cc as my first bike but I'm also debating on getting this Kawasaki, since I got to ride it for over 10 hours and passed the exam with it.
@Calamity it's has a nice depth to the sound and is truly enjoyable when you open it up with the intakes. I had the ninja 400 before this one and it's sounds like a twin with testicular fortitude 👍 You could probably pay a lot more for a slight increase but it thrives nicely
I had a ninja 400 before it also...1 flip over the rear end of a car and enough scratches to right it off made stepping up to the torque both cheap and fun as hell
Hopefully you get to try the rest of the range, they have some cool bikes =) The "gear shift" indicator can be set differently, it's set up for economical riding by default.
Few days ago I was researching about this one and maintenance on this one is ridiculously cheap since it uses just 1.8 liters of oil compared to the 2.7 the mt and cb so you save some cash there every oil change... wanted to ask you since you have owned the mt07 and the cb650 back to back with this one which would be the order you would choose? Does it feel a massive difference or gap between the 20Hp the cb has or the so famous mt fun cp engine? what would you say down low torque? thanks
im just starting on my journey to my motorcycle lisence, and have been looking into which bike to get. The z400 looks like a good starting point, but i think id get tired of it fast. i think i could handle a 650, as i have some experience riding lower cc bikes. Also im a little older then maybe the average new rider (30 years old) id also like to think i have decent throttle control. how would you compare the z400 to a z650? is it a big jump in power, and how does the z400 feel compared to the heavier z650? what i really want is an mt07, but prices here are kinda messed up and a used z650 is pretty cheap compared to the other 650 alternatives... i could get a used 2018 z650 with low milage for the same price as a new 2022/23 Z400, so thats also something i have to take into consideration
@@moreorlesdone1497 Better suspension and handling, better brakes, better looks (subjective), better top speed and almost identical price here. The Z650 is still a fantastic bike though, like many modern naked bikes.
So here where I am in the US the Honda CBR500r is close in price to this bike also...any thoughts on this one and sv650 and mt-07? Unable to test ride any of these.

Hey Dan, love that bike but cannot make up my mind between that and the ninja 650. Kinda leaning towards the ninja. What is the name of the tune playing as the video started? Awesome tune!
That engine sound was 'fun to listen' in my opinion. Actually, this bike doesn't come to Indonesia. If it does come to Indonesia, the tax will sky rocket
hi, racking my brains trying to decide between a RE Hunter and a Kawasaki Z650RS. like the price, looks and mpg of Hunter and wonder if the Kawasakis is £3k better? Will it be more reliable and better built? Im 62, just passed my test and will use the bike for some 12 mile commuting and the odd 60 mile journey into London via A roads. Slightly put off with Hunter servicing every 6 months, not sure if that would be an issue for you. As a beginner, would the Kawa be "too much"?. Obviously its all subjective but would value your advice. Ps the Z650rs is a looker as well and comes with 4 yr warranty.
Nice review, thanks. I am in the market for a midweight naked and have just had a test ride on an MT-07, a bike you know well. But no comparison in this test? Spill the beans, which did you prefer? I really enjoyed my 1 hour ride on the MT, fantastic engine and balance etc, but hated the tiny cheap switchgear and the fact you had to look down away from the road to read the intruments because the panel is set so low. I couldn't even use the indicators in thick winter gloves without looking they are so small...How did the Z650 swtichgear compare here? Also some folks have said the Z650 is not for taller folks - how did you find the riding position, is it more cramped than the MT?
Not ridden the MT07 so can't compare but I am 6 ft and the Z650 is definitely cramped for me. I increased the seat height and that has helped but the bike is still pretty small for my height.
It's down to looks. If the Ninja 650 looks better to you get that. Everything else is almost exactly the same. Sit on both if you're not sure. I love my Z, but the looks are not for everyone. Dan comparing it to Marmite is spot on.
Great review and looks like a fine bike, I still prefer the CB650R though. Hbu Dan? Something about that CB650R round headlight and 4 cylinder that I really like. 😁
How does it compare to the CB650R? I'll be progressing to a friendly middleweight soon and the CB650R is my front runner at the moment (I have a CB125R currently) so would be great to see a comparison between the two. The TFT display is a clear advantage over the LCD on the CB650R however.
The CB650R has a more premium feel to it overall. Better suspension and brakes and around 25bhp extra too. That's not to say the Z650 isn't good, it's just hard to overlook the CB650R in my country when it's only £350 more expensive than the Z650!

Pretty cool dash, nice sound! Those mirrors are quite the eye sore IMO. Great work on your videos!
Your video was waited for me so badly 🙌🏼👌🏼
great videos dan i just watched the video of the kawasaki z650 i own a zx6 r 2001 love it
Btw I finally got my CB650R. I can relate when you said you like where the indicators are located. Have to say on the Honda the position is a bit awkward compared to other bikes.
Cool dash and great look! It’s truly the little sister of the z900 👍
Great review and totally confused me now, was looking very strongly at the SV650 for my first big bike but this looks and sounds fantastic.
Low speed maneuvers are great on this machine, except for the snatchy on-off throttle
The CB650R is overall a great bike.
Sometimes I feel fatigue in lower legs becasue of such tight ergonomic.
the "we're gonna go for the overtake, you know its got a surprising amount of pickup,.... woooooooh!" made me giggle
Bikes are fun!
@@Englishbikerdan And these really do pick up don’t they!? 😁👍
Seen this bike in the shop, very small and compact size for a 650. Pretty much around the same size as the Z250. Kinda impressive.
Yeah, it's a pocket rocket!
Really good looking bike. Also, it sounds so much better once it's moving, compared to the stand still "sound check"
Spot on, sounds amazing when on the go, this never gets a mention in most of the reviews.
Thank you for the great review😁👍🏻, best one I've seen on this bike. I am looking into getting my motorcycle licence in a month or so, and I really like the styling of the Z650. In Australia the Z650 is learner approved bike 😅
Same 4 me.. had a er6n, have a Z900 now. Love both bikes
I’m from Australia too and am wondering if this would be a good first bike. Did you end up getting the z650?
Great review EBD, Cheers !
Indian Village roads are like this .Trees and trees I usually love to ride on my Zx10r with Racefit silencer... and this z650 is good really good i drive the full faring body nice ...
Another great video 👍 got a nice "burbble"sound 🌟
Looks like it was worth the trip. Looking forward to whatever else you can get a ride on. I prefer the looks of the honda, the kawasaki has a very busy look.
I am thinking about getting the A2 restricted version as my first motorcycle to practice my riding skills. I hope it's not going to be too powerful for myself, but it's not like i am going to be silly on it anyways.
Good review Dan.
Thank you, Trev 👍
Beautiful motorcycle ...and review is awesome..God bless you 🙏 love from 🇮🇳
I used to have an ER6 which has the same engine, and while I found the performance really good, I found the engine note horrible. It needs the cross plane crank and I don’t know why Kawasaki don’t change it.
I think because it sells really well as it is. Why spend all that money money developing a new cross plane engine if what they have is already popular? Doesn't make business sense until sales start falling at least.
EnglishBikerDan yeah, true, fair enough.
@@mrnicktoyou Also look at the Honda 500 range of bikes. They sell really well but have that 180 degree crank. I do agree with you though, it would be great if they all had 270 cranks. Maybe one day! Thanks for watching!
AWESOME REVIEW I LOVE KAWASAKI
Entertaining review as usual. Nice bike. Colour hmm especially the green frame.
Thanks, this is quite an old one now so well done for finding it! Some random trivia for you, I nearly quit YT when I recorded this vid.
@@Englishbikerdan I am very glad you didn’t. I often end up watching old videos without realising because I am interested in the bikes. I don’t buy new as I can’t afford them.
Would be cool to see the Ninja 650 too!
Add fairings and lower grips and this is that video. Lol
MT 03 is a great small bike. You will like it for sure.
Cracking bike, love it. Not seen one in the flesh as yet
As an American this almost a different language 😆
I don't understand MC pricing at all. In the US, this bike is a full $2000 less than the CB650R. In fact, the CB costs even more than the Z900.
Yep, very strange! In the UK they are almost the same price.
Damn I love the video but also really like the intro!! Gg man
Thanks Stefan!
This bike look very mentally nice! Im looking for upgrading my bike and i think this z650 suit me
I'm looking for upgrading my bike and I also I think Z1000 suitable for me...
@@cuccitiniooiglesias187 z1000its too much for me but if Kawasaki redesign the looks, ill go for it

Benelli now offers the 752s for 7500 euros that would be a good competitor
Would you recommend the Z650 over the MT07 or a Triumph Trident?
Heard that the 50th anniversary had inverted telescopic forks.. it doesn't seem that way in the pictures lol
Have the Akropovic on my 2017, sounds brilliant :)
@Calamity it's has a nice depth to the sound and is truly enjoyable when you open it up with the intakes.
I had the ninja 400 before this one and it's sounds like a twin with testicular fortitude 👍
You could probably pay a lot more for a slight increase but it thrives nicely
I had a ninja 400 before it also...1 flip over the rear end of a car and enough scratches to right it off made stepping up to the torque both cheap and fun as hell
Nice video.. do u prefer this bike or mt07?
MT07
@@Englishbikerdan nice.. so what is the pros and cons of both bikes?
Hopefully you get to try the rest of the range, they have some cool bikes =)
The "gear shift" indicator can be set differently, it's set up for economical riding by default.
Hopefully ZH2 soon. 😁
I had a ER6- n, was my first big bike, so safe! Love it! Sure this is the same! maybe i go and buy it... is enough for me
Same here, but now I have a Z900 😎
Removing price tag from the equation, this or the 2020 SV650?
SV for me.
Hey Dan, can you tell me whats the jacket that you are using?
Hey, sure thing, it's an Oxford Delta 1.0.
@@Englishbikerdan Thanks!
I know you owned the cb650 and more recently you bought the sv650. How would you compare this to those bikes?
Few days ago I was researching about this one and maintenance on this one is ridiculously cheap since it uses just 1.8 liters of oil compared to the 2.7 the mt and cb so you save some cash there every oil change... wanted to ask you since you have owned the mt07 and the cb650 back to back with this one which would be the order you would choose? Does it feel a massive difference or gap between the 20Hp the cb has or the so famous mt fun cp engine?
what would you say down low torque? thanks
Seems like a very tall fuel tank. Did the brakes work in for you.?
im just starting on my journey to my motorcycle lisence, and have been looking into which bike to get.
VS CB650R ? what do you prefer?
CB650R.
@@Englishbikerdan Because??
@@moreorlesdone1497 Better suspension and handling, better brakes, better looks (subjective), better top speed and almost identical price here. The Z650 is still a fantastic bike though, like many modern naked bikes.
@@Englishbikerdan Yes ;p like that / also a cb650r ovner.
So here where I am in the US the Honda CBR500r is close in price to this bike also...any thoughts on this one and sv650 and mt-07? Unable to test ride any of these.
z650 or honda cb650r? searching for my first bike :) could you like give a quick summary of the main differences between them? Thank you so much, love your vids!
Nice vid and rev pal, do you think you'll do a Z900 review? It would be good to get your opinion on it
I tried but the dealer doesn't have any demo bikes. So it's not looking likely. 😔
@@Englishbikerdan yep true my man I forgot Kawasaki are running low on numbers at the mo, probably be a few months at least unless another dealer....
Nice review, what's your camera and mic settup etc?
Hey mate, how’s the ergos & handling compare to cb 650?
I found it a bit more upright and comfortable than the CB650R.
Would you recommend this as a 1st bike?
That’s such a pleasing thumbnail😂
Hey Dan, love that bike but cannot make up my mind between that and the ninja 650. Kinda leaning towards the ninja. What is the name of the tune playing as the video started? Awesome tune!
That engine sound was 'fun to listen' in my opinion. Actually, this bike doesn't come to Indonesia. If it does come to Indonesia, the tax will sky rocket
@Redrum yups! Especially when you got taxed 3 times the price of the bike. And yearly tax are excluded
I had some real issues with vibrations, especially in the bars. Put my hands to sleep. Any one else have this issue?
I had that issue with my er6f
hi, racking my brains trying to decide between a RE Hunter and a Kawasaki Z650RS. like the price, looks and mpg of Hunter and wonder if the Kawasakis is £3k better? Will it be more reliable and better built? Im 62, just passed my test and will use the bike for some 12 mile commuting and the odd 60 mile journey into London via A roads. Slightly put off with Hunter servicing every 6 months, not sure if that would be an issue for you. As a beginner, would the Kawa be "too much"?. Obviously its all subjective but would value your advice. Ps the Z650rs is a looker as well and comes with 4 yr warranty.
Honestly, I think the Z650RS would be the one I chose.
nice and simple bike
Its a fun bike but I used to do my motorcycle lessons on it so it felt slow after a while.
Hey nice video! What extra do you get with the performance model? I'm torn between this or the Ninja 650. Cheers!
It's down to looks. If the Ninja 650 looks better to you get that. Everything else is almost exactly the same. Sit on both if you're not sure. I love my Z, but the looks are not for everyone. Dan comparing it to Marmite is spot on.
Good your back. Still waiting for the trip with CB650R video
It keeps getting flagged for copyright. Not sure why so I'm waiting too!

you seemed to love the cb500f how would you compare the two mate?
really good review btw, like yours the best, seeing familiar roads :)
The Z650 has more torque/power and a few fancy extras like the dash. Not too dissimilar though really.
I have heard that this and even the newer ninja 650 have a lot of buzzing throughout the bike? Is that true?
It's not something I really noticed but then I expect most bikes to vibrate a certain amount.
picking up a 300km demo 2020 z650 start of July for bombing around Japan,
Nice choice of words
How does it compare to the CB650R? I'll be progressing to a friendly middleweight soon and the CB650R is my front runner at the moment (I have a CB125R currently) so would be great to see a comparison between the two.
The TFT display is a clear advantage over the LCD on the CB650R however.
The CB650R has a more premium feel to it overall. Better suspension and brakes and around 25bhp extra too. That's not to say the Z650 isn't good, it's just hard to overlook the CB650R in my country when it's only £350 more expensive than the Z650!
@@Englishbikerdan cheers Dan! For the sake of 350 quid it's a bit of a no brainer then. Think I'll splash a bit extra for heated handgrips as well mind 😉
Which is better, this or Vulcan 650?
How would this compare to the Honda NC750x?
