I love these "first ride home" videos. It just goes to show that everyone feels nervous that first time.
First time when I went to search mine on the dealership I was excited
When the bike started rolling I was extremely dissapointed, my expectations were already really low but the reality of the bike was at the bottom of the pit
For sure. Rode around my neighborhood for a couple of hours when I got mine until I felt fairly comfortable with the clutch, but was definitely nerve racking going on the actual roads for the first time! Certainly takes some time to build up confidence.

@@Dr.BenjiBuddy It was a 2 stroke that vaguely sounded like one and had no powerband.
It is restricted on speed by law and to pass the emissions test so that is why it was like that.
I derestricted it right after the break in period, it was really a chore doing 600 miles as I already had the car to move around and all the problems I mentioned were gone.
It is not fast, but It's a really fun toy to go around on the dirt and going around town
I still remember the first time I went riding in a road. I just couldn't stop shaking, and no, it wasn't cold hahahahaha.

I just bought my first bike, 2007 honda shadow spirit 750, road it for about 10 minutes so nervous because its heavy

I was instantly reminded of my first ride out on public roads. Anyone who says they're not nervous their first time is either lying or just too dumb to know any better. After my first year in the saddle, riding felt as natural as breathing. Good luck, and nice bike!

not necessarily true. this is def true for city people. im a bit of a country dude and ive been a dirt biker since i was 8. im now in the market for my first proper motorcycle and im not nervous at all. the only anxiety i anticipate will be induced by the stupidity of other drivers.
Wait till you're 15 years in. You keep getting better at it if you ride and think about it and try to learn stuff. I'd have a hard time giving it up, I haven't really done anything because I wanted to for that long.
You go from thinking you know, to knowing things, to knowing why.

The thing about stalling I think is people don't know how to listen to their motor. I drove manual cars since I could drive, which is half my life. Listening to the motor won't easy at first, but once you get acclimated, you won't forget it. I never rode a bike til last month, but I've never stalled once. It's the same concept. Don't be afraid to roll on the throttle while squeezing your clutch. Motorcycles are way more forgiving and if you have a motorcycle that runs wet, even better.
What do you mean by runs wet? A wet clutch?

I’m so glad to hear this I just purchased a 95 virago 750 my dad rode it home and it’s waiting for me to get my license! I am nervous but one thing I’ve felt good about is the fact even though I’m only 20 I’ve driven standard for a little over 2 years. I imagine that this would make my first ride a bit easier and you definitely brought my confidence up a bit!
If you drove standard for 2 years, you will have no problem with a motorcycle.

I'm currently in the process of getting my license (I already have been having a car driver's license for around 2.5 years) and I will soon head into the theory exam. I'm still kind of nervous though, but I already technically know how to ride a motorcycle, I just don't have any experience. I will buy a 125 cc. I wish I could have recorded mine xD, it was a sketchy, scary and exciting ride home, 2012 cbr600rr, while I surprisingly didn't stall the thing, getting out of the dealer to the road it took me 2 lanes to make a right turn because of I wasn't used to the steering, and on top of that it was very hard to be smooth with the throttle, after a week or so finally got used to it and felt comfortable, but boy was that ride home so surreal, my second bike an mt10 kinda brought me that feeling back again since it was more powerful and has a different style of riding.

he is not actual beginner, he is a fraud. He uploaded his first vid with the same bike at 600 miles on the clock and he was not beginner there. Kudos to this dude for having the cojones to put that online. It went actually pretty swiftly! Your first ride will, indeed, be scary and confusing. Chances are you will forget half of what you learned with your MSF course or equivalent. Just take your time, chill out and enjoy your new poison.
Because yes, from that point forward, you WILL invest way too much time and money into biking. But you WILL have the time of your life.

What a great video. While watching the video, all my memories of my first ride “on my own” came back to me. It was a 49 miles trip from the dealer, and all the employees and mechanics came out, to wish me a safe trip home from the dealership. Will never forget that moment !

I remember in the early 80s going from a Yamaha FS1E to a RD 250 , shaking like a leaf when I got home . Absolutely fantastic 😊 ! And still riding today .
Oh I know that feeling. Awesome memories.. I did my course on a same bike, the sound of that engine gives me goosebumps.. Since I did my license a year ago I rode 14k km and 5 countries. I wish you all the best, safe rides!

What a great video. Just from the way he is riding the motorcycle you can tell its of relatively new experience, but thats refreshing to see given all the videos of guys ripping and tearing on their bikes of choice. I’ve ridden for 10 years total in life, but I only recently started riding again after a decade long break. When I rode my bike home from the dealer a couple of weeks ago , I couldn’t find neutral , then I started to panic cause I felt like a noob again - then I stalled the bike 😂! After a few more stalls at stoplights on the way home , my muscle memory came back. Watching TH-cam videos helped a ton too - how to clutch , blip, throttle control again.
I didn’t check how this video was, but congrats on the bike! Solid first bike choice, too.
This is now my new favorite videos watching people ride their motorcycle for the 1st time. I remember mine nervously trying to handle my clutch & gear up/down cuz it's really old style manual with my father guiding me.
I have an OLD scooter I just bought. I never knew how to ride a scooter but the achievement when I bought it was awesome. it's been a month now since I bought it and the thrill on learning how to ride a motorcycle is awesome! I am still learning. achievement is an achievement know matter how cheap it is! :) I keep on watching all the tutorials on how to U-turn and how to corner.
Although I've gotten my first motorcycle already (an old Soviet Dnepr K750, solo variant, from 1966 which served in the Soviet Military), I can feel the adrenaline, stress, excitement and relief in this video. Always fun to see new riders come around. I still have to get some paperwork done for it and get my license, but the few times I drove it in my small neighborhood I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I can't wait to get all the paperwork done and get my license so I can drive it to various places I know on my first drive on the public road. I love old motorcycles.. they have this charm that you don't feel often.
My story into getting a Dnepr from 1966, discussing options and first experiences:
I do German WW2 reenactments (I do this hobby because of my interest in the German military of the time), and always drove along in another Dnepr turned BMW R71, but with sidecar. This did spark my interest a bit into getting an old motorcycle. Few months pass and we have an event in Eeklo, Belgium. There, a small group of Luftwaffe reenactors put up a camp with a small MBK Poney that actually drove in wartime. They did not leave the engine original, as the found the 50cc engine lacking in performance, and replaced it with an 80cc. I asked if I could take a test ride on it to see how those things feel.. I was instantly sold.
Over the course of time I talked about it with my group and parents (at the first mention of getting one, I was 19.. now I'm 20), they told me to get a pre-war DKW or a wartime DKW. We did some research and found a pre-war DKW KS200. We then did some research regarding parts and the costs of these parts... sadly the KS200 parts are very rare, and thus very expensive compared to purchasing the bike itself. Then a week or 2 passes and I search a DKW NZ350, which still has quite a stock of parts in Poland, but I also had the name 'Dnepr' stowed away in my head. The people in my group did tell me: more CC = better performance. Then 'Dnepr', which I had stowed away, came back up. Told my group members, and parents I would rather want to get a Dnepr, due to the gigantic stock of parts and their cheap maintenance.
I found quite a lot of Dneprs in Belgium, especially in The Netherlands. After trying to find the cheapest possible running and driving Dnepr (which was no easy job), we stumbled upon the one that I have now, for a dirt cheap price of 1650 euros and bought it in September 2023, normally they go for 3000 euros minimum. It's overall look was better than pictures, and has some rust here and there.. still original paint from 1966. We had some 'kiddy flu's' regarding the elctrical system, making us change it from 6v to 12v, had to oversize to put new piston heads on both sides and adjust the richness of both cylinders.. but that was pretty much it. I drove it on a dropping event last month and oh man, it is a ROCKET. Despite only having 26HP, it accelerates at a better pace than people expect..
Do note.. these ladies have an attitude that will last an eternity. They don't want to drive, they won't. You force them? You'll feel it a few times before starting (speaking from experience)

This was similar to my experience, passed my test then straight on my bike the same day. You can see the difference in test standards in the UK vs some other countries. Still some anxiety but can tell you have had a lot of lessons and had no problem with procedures, road positioning, and approaching at the right speed etc. Unlike Americans where their exam is a quick ride in a car park then a pass certificate lol.
American here... my classes start tomorrow, and going onto the road right after I finish the class is worrying me... Going to take it nice and slow though.
@@jerichostevens2711 Nice and slow is best bet. One of the hardest parts in my opinion is to find a good, calm instructor. Don't be afraid to change instructors/schools if they are like a drill Sargent (I had to change mine) and you'll be fine, with patience. Everyone starts with baby steps (even the ones that pretend they didn't). Before you know it, it will become second nature. Good luck with it
In U.S. that is not quite how it works. First you must have valid drivers license and be 16 or older for a full motorcycle endorsement. I had my learners permit at age 15 where you can drive auto when accompanied by an adult and my license by age 16. Then you can take written test to get temporary permit for motorcycle that entitles you to practice riding a motorcycle during daytime without passenger for up to year. The other option is taking a multi-day course which leads to getting your official license.
Taking lessons on a closed course for a few days may be a good start for new riders but will never fully prepare you for what you might encounter on a motorway. In my case I had been riding small displacement dual sport motorcycles off-road since age 12. Riding motorcycle off-road gives you much more refined motorcycle operating skills and understanding of vehicle dynamics that are already second nature ingrained muscle memory. For me the actual endorsement test was just a dumb formality. If I needed to take such a course it would've been a gross waste of my money and time. The younger you learn something the faster you learn and the better your skill set in the long-run. Obviously, this must be weighed versus emotional maturity but judging this is arbitrary and some individuals never mature or are high risk-takers even well into adulthood.
The primary issues in U.S. for motorcyclists are alcohol consumption and excessive risk taking. The other major issue is the wreckless behaviors of other motorists who often show little regard for motorcyclists along with their marginal driving skills.
Bottom line is too many Europeans support leftist ideologies that government should dictate everything and accept such increasing intrusion willingly even though the ramifications are becoming increasingly negative. The one key thing I will credit Europeans for is they have mandated ABS on all motorcycles. This is well justified based on tangible fatality statistics (~25% reduction in death rate) not some bureacratic lawyers using small sample size and personal judgements to create more restrictive laws . In U.S. we have too many ignorant schmucks who think they have elite skills better than ABS in emergency situation. Unfortunately, manufacturers don't do the right thing and still sell non-ABS bikes in U.S. just to reduce price by $300-$400 so they dont lose some sales.
@kannermw Thank you for explaining it Sir as being European (Polish) it always make me wonder what does procedure in United States look like. I am working towards my A license in England so see how it go. One thing I found as also being a HGV driver that is always people that causing danger not vehicles as those have to past technical assessments like for example MOT in England. I agree with you about leftist idealogy in Europe 🇪🇺 it is fucking drama. Is almost like a lot of people decided not to use they brain and waiting for government permission to wipe they ass.
@@kannermw Many inaccuracies here. The test standard in the UK is not "taking lessons on a closed course for a few days" - this shows you do not know what you are talking about here.
The test standard is made up of 2 modules. You start out (yes, in a yard) under a qualified instructor - If you are learning to become a Doctor, or a Fireman, should they just let you learn yourself? or would you learn more under someone that is qualified and high-level within the field? as with things such as martial arts training (or any other skill that requires the guidance by someone who is already more qualified than you) it's invaluable to have that person there to know you how to ride, and correct mistakes as you go.
You start out in a yard, learning the basics such as clutch control, correct braking, sequential gearing for coming to a stop (right gear, right speed) - and only then do you go out on to the road. I can say that, with over 20+ hours of instructor-lead motorcycle lessons, only 2 hours was based in the yard. The rest was based out on the road, motorways with someone who is qualified to instruct and an established rider.
The first element is Module 1, which consists of emergency stops, handling of the bike, figure-8 manoeuvres, clutch control, U-turns, progressing through the gears etc. Once you pass this, only THEN do you progress on to MOD 2. The theory element includes a test on the Highway Code and also various hazard perception exercises. This also must be passed before even attempting MOD 1.
Mod 2 consists of a motorcycle safety check, eyesight check, and about 40 minutes of on-road riding assisted and unassisted, which includes various procedures, unassisted riding, various manoeuvres. You have a certain amount of minor faults and major faults that you can make before you fail/pass. Basically, to pass this stage, you have to be consistent and competent - THIS is what sets the UK apart, as far as motorcycle training anyway. Your view on politics in relation to the test standard in the UK is a negative interpretation. Anything that is serious/dangerous and with a higher mortality rate SHOULD be led by someone with more experience, the bar SHOULD be higher and harder to pass. Letting someone practice on their motorcycle unassisted is lunacy to me, and that explains the higher mortality rate on motorcycles in the U.S

Don't be afraid to go one gear lower with more RPM. this way you have more space to engine brake too!

Does this apply to cars as well ? I've been taught that running high gear low rpm is more eco friendly but nothing about the maintenance of my engine.
@@benoit8381 that dude hasn't a clue for one it's a brand new bike which need broken in so naturally has to be run at lower rpms for 600 miles and an oil change and two runny an engine at low rpms does absolutely no damage at all compared to having it sitting screaming its head of just cruising is 1000% worse 🤣 you wouldn't sit in 1st gear nearly redlining and think I'm doing the engine a favour 😅

Love this video, I was just the same about 6 yrs ago when I picked up my first street triple on a very sunny and very cold October morning, I booked the day off work, the night before was the closest I’ve felt to the excitement of Christmas Eve since I was a kid, picked up the bike and was sh8tting myself, I stopped around the corner from the bike shop and had to give myself a talking to, since then I’m on my 2nd newer street triple and have ridden all over Europe and the UK, bloody love it.

New bikes should be ridden under 4500rpm until 1st service. After that u can rev it as high as u want.

Totally agree…..if your not a bit nervous and pumping at first then you are not safe……I was like that the first time I took my NC750DCT out, after 43 years of not riding, very quickly you relax, you remember your training, you settle down , gentle on everything, and enjoy the ride, I self assess after each ride, to see where and how I could have done better….just being disciplined and honest, when you get it right, it’s great…oh to have such quiet roads as you seem to have, I live in Jersey, our roads are so so busy….you have to look so far ahead, look at side roads, and use the road so you can be seen earlier, and those life savers are a must….I find after two hours of busy traffic riding, I am tired, so I stop, do not over do it…and ride your ride, nobody else’s…..great to be back on a bike…

Well done, I have just got another bike at 60 yrs old after 35 years not riding and can really relate to these ride home videos. I had some rusty rider training first and the vulnerability is scary however I am aware of my ability and loving my Triumph 660 sport and improving with every ride.
Same here PNH, i'm 59 and not rode for 25 years. I did consider the Triumph Trident 660 but settled with the z650. Loving every minute of it...what a waste of 25 years haha.

How'd it go? I've been riding for 9 years and ride a gsxs1000 now. Couldn't imagine starting on it though.
@@hirdy932 That day, I rented a trailer because I could not do it. Now, I'm doing ok and driving everyday but still having issues with u-turns.
@@gammash yeah. I rode a ninja 300 and a Yamaha mt07 before the gsxs and the first thing I noticed was how bad the turning circle was in comparison. I don't have the gt but I'd say it's geometry can't be too different, so I wouldn't feel bad that you're having that problem. Glad to hear you're still riding though! Here in Australia it's very illegal to start on such a big bike, but I admire you going straight for what you want.

bro thank you so much for this. i just got my first bike this week (Magna VF1100c) and that rolling stall right at the beginning immediately made me feel better about mine lol. riding too low a gear is my next bad habit too break.🙌

I had one as my first bike too. It's the perfect bike for the first year or two, or more if you ride mostly slower roads. In the end I upgraded to a 900.

Motorcyclist of 49yrs, now don’t ride in winter and my first spring ride get nervous and make mistakes. Trail brake riding is biggest thing to learn for safety imo

How did it went
I did ride my bike home from the dealership but to be fair I bought a Honda Rebel 1100 (DCT) so yeah it was really easy because not clutch or shifting. Mine you I am no where near a skilled or experienced rider and only got on a manual motorcycle a few times a few years ago. I could not handle the clutch/shifting so I found out about the DCT rebel, saved up enough money and bought it. Completely love this bike and granted I have mild arthritis in my left hand so the Rebel 1100 DCT I would definitely recommend if your not into clutch/shifting.

I remember my first ride, trailered my bike home from the dealership (which was like 46 miles away from home) and I rode it around a church parking lot for like 10 minutes then took it up the mountain pass for a few miles before heading back. I managed not to stall! Too much fun.

One tip my guy, when you are cornering dont go inner, go out as much as you can, its going to give you a better vision and more chances to dodge cars, obstacles and all that.

Great video! My son has expressed an interest in motorcycles and I've been doing research too and I've agreed to potentially getting our motorcycle licenses together. I will say though as an American watching this video, it's making me nervous watching you drive on the opposite side of the road than I'm used to here. 😅 Thanks for posting your video!

Good next step would be to get 1. safety training and 2. lean angle training on a bike with wheeled outriggers. Fast route to proficiency.

Only thing I have against the Kawa is, I would like a little more power and it would be perfect. It’s very comfortable to ride 👌🏻

Hey congrats man! Just got a 2023 Z400 and i love it so much :-) Was gonna get the 650 but i didn't really see a point cuz i commute around town anyways, and i didn't wanna pay 4K extra for a 10 mph top speed difference
Nice! I'm torn between Z400 and Ninja 400. Did you try sitting on both bikes? Are the ergos vastly different from each other or other than the fairings, not much difference?

@@sonicmoj1 The Z 400 is more upright and the ninja 400 in more sporty. Cant really go wrong with whatever one you choose. They have the same motor the only difference is faring's and body position.

I got mine in September last year. Crashed it in April because of an idiot and got a new one. The feeling is awesome sitting on one so soon again :D
Good luck with polishing your riding skills! I wouldn't buy a new bike as my first one, mainly because there's the highest risk of laying it down when you're a newbie, so my first two bikes were bought as used ones. I still remember my Yamaha XJ600n, then the Aprilia Shiver 750. After those I switched to Hondas and bought my first new bike, the CB 650R. Currently I own a new CB1000R and let me tell you this, I don't regret one second riding on a motorcycle. The best thing I ever did for myself in my whole life was getting a motorcycle license. Congratulations!!! Got my first "big" bike 3 weeks ago; a cbr600rr coming from a 300cc its definitely a pretty big jump but not too overwhelming. The speed and power is very manageable. It all depends on the rider I guess. Good luck with your bike!!
For a first ride home vid that was very good and safe, takes some balls to film it too. I sold my Ducati 916 and emigrated to Cyprus 18 years ago, I bought a KTM 640 out there to get around, crazy drivers and dangerous roads not for superbikes. Repatriated in 2022 and bought a Z1000SX from The Toy Shop in Grimsby. Picked it up at 5pm in November, already a bit nervous as I sold the KTM in 2012 so not been on a bike for 10 years. The ride home was around 20 miles and it became foggy and very cold, my visor misting up, freezing cold hands and took the wrong exit off the motorway to the middle of nowhere. This bike looked after me all the way home, I wish I had made a video, you wouldn't have seen much but the commentary would have been fun to listen to.
Red Kawasaki, what a beaut! Excellent video, exactly where I had my test almost a year ago (Cambourne) :) First ride home, was from Market Harborough to Ely. I was INCREDIBLY scared. Fast forward 7 months later, and I've ridden from Ely to Belfast on the same day, almost a quarter of the way standing on the bike to not having my bum go numb.

Bought my first new bike 44 years ago, a 1980 Suzuki GS550e. I remembered exactly how I felt watching the beginning of this first real ride. Very nervous but ready to burst with happiness being able to ride my dream, good show!

Sometimes when I get on my Hayabusa I pretend that I’m 17 again and that I never rode a street bike before just for a thrill, pretty childish I know, but a little reminder that pride goeth before a fall. I always try to remember that everyone else on the road can cause a deadly crash, even pedestrians.

my first ride in 2004 was across Golden Gate Park and i got so spooked and lacked the confidence, that i took it home and parked it.....A year later I was on my way to Costa Rica....lol....great memories!!

Ah yes that feeling for the first time, I ride before the old z650 during training course, the new z650 clutch is super grip careful with that one, I remember I fail because of that, well third time the charm I pass the course, congratulation getting new z650 bike.

Passed my CBT last week and bought a 125cc about 30 miles away. Drove home in strong winds and rain, absolutely terrifying at some points, but I won’t ever go out in such conditions through choice. Looking forward to a ‘nice’ ride very soon
