I saw this movie in the theater in 1989. You guys cannot imagine the energy in the audience. The entire theater howled when they heard him say: “I’m Batman”.
There has never been such energy or excitement for a Batman movie before or since.
This one will always be the best of the best.

What's crazy is how many people were complaining about and doubting the casting of both Keaton and Nicholson for this film when it was announced the movie was being made. So many people saw Keaton as only a comedic actor and Nicholson as a weird dramatic actor and gave neither of them any trust in playing their roles well enough to satisfy comic fans and casual movie goers alike. Fast forward to now, and they are both always in the conversation for who is the best Batman and Joker.

@@georgekappos7126 I'm not talking about those who made the film. I'm referring to the general public's reaction to the casting decisions. My best friend at the time and his father ran a comic book shop and I can't even begin to count how many times someone would be in there making some remark about how they can't believe these were the people they picked to play these roles. We were in high school when this released in the theater and I distinctly recall more than a few people saying how wrong they were for doubting.

I remember that. the common insult was "Mr Mom is Batman?!" (For those of you too young, Keaton was best known for a movie called Mr. Mom where he because a male housewife)
And ALSO, it was unheard of for an A-list Academy Winner/Oscar winner (Jack Nicholson) to do a comic book movie.
Personally, Nicholson has been cool and talented his whole career...so I think once other actors saw an a-lister can do a comic book villain (and ace it), then it must be ok. After him....the floodgates open to good actors: Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Christopher Walken, Jim Carey.
Nicholson made is OK for good actors to act in comic book movies.

Even without nostalgia goggles, Michael Keaton, just like Christopher Reeves as Superman, was born to play Batman. He didn't just deliver a performance, to many he made a childhood hero come to life on the big screen for the first time in 1989. You are going to love Batman Returns. It's even darker and Michelle Pfeiffer just steals the movie.

I remember when Tim Burton cast Michael Keaton as Batman, I wasn't so concerned about whether or not he could pull off Batman, but I was hugely concerned whether or not Michael Keaton could pull off Bruce Wayne. At the time, Keaton had been in a lot of movies where he was expected to be "over the top" in his acting (not unlike Jim Carrey for a more recent example). His subdued performance as Bruce Wayne absolutely nailed it for me. Keaton was a spot on Batman and a spot on Bruce Wayne.

What I loved about Keaton as Bruce Wayne was that for all his subdued performance, looking into his eyes, you could believe there was this steeled resolve and fire inside him. Contrary to many others, Keaton to me was really able to bring across that the Bruce Wayne persona is the show act and the Batman persona a much more authentic representation of his character.

I, myself, had about 4 Batman T-shirts and 2 caps. People paid just to see the trailer. They'd find out what films the trailer was attached to, buy their ticket, watch the trailer and leave. Every Warner Bros. film that came out before Batman got a big bump in its box office.
This movie also had 2 soundtracks. The first was the Prince soundtrack...songs featured in and inspired by the film. The 2nd...Danny Elfman's film score. And, yeah, I got 'em both.

The heavy breathing that Nicolson did when he says "remember you're my number one guy" is his impression of Jack Palance because he had that distinctive delivery style delivering his lines where he breathes heavily. Some of that was due to Jack Palance's severe wounds suffered in WWII. They had to basically rebuild his face and nasal cavities etc. Check out Jack Palance in Shane.

I keep going back and forth between this Batman and Batman Returns. I think Batman has the better arch-villain antithesis in Nicholson's Joker, but Batman Returns has the superior romance with the tragic relationship between Bruce Wayne and Selena Kyle, who are perfect for each other and yet can never be.

I remember seeing this in the theater. I think I was even late for work that day. lol.
I can't lie about it, Jack Nickelson's version of the Joker was so good, it took me YEARS before I would watch "The Dark Knight", because I didn't think there was any way Heath Ledger could live up to it. I have to admit, I was wrong. When I was finally talked into watching it, I was shocked at how good his performance was. They are, as Mr. Miagi would say, "different but same".

With this joker, they really pay homage to the different side of comics. Because with the comics, you have a very comic book type character from the 60s to the 80s, in from the 80s to present you have a very gritty dark realistic joker. This was a perfect iteration of the former

The basic way I would describe 'Batman Returns' is just... more. Everything 'Batman' did, it turns up to eleven; Tim Burton got carte blanche to do whatever the hell he wanted after the success of the first one, and he went nuts. The music is better, the costume is better, the villains (in my opinion, at least) are better; Gotham in general looks amazing, and it's just generally about as pure 'Tim Burton' as you could possible get. Not everybody likes it, mind you, so maybe you won't either, but personally, it's one of my favorites. I hope you watch it.
'Aquaman' is definitely worth watching. It's technically a follow-up to 'Justice League', but apart from one tiny throwaway mention of that movie, it is basically a stand-alone watch; everything you need to know about Aquaman is explained right up front. Jason Momoa (I hope I spelled that right) is great in the lead; it looks terrific, and there's some good villains. (Oh, and - you mentioned Willem Dafoe? He's in it.)
