My Photos Suck.

  • My photos suck lately. It's natural to not always be amazing. But what happens when your photos suck on assignment?
    My Instagram: bit.ly/BvSInsta
    My Camera Gear: bit.ly/BvSGear
    I'm on assignment in Wales and the weather really isn't cooperating. As a result, my photos suck. I feel like I'm in a bit of a photography slump. The images aren't as good as they should be, and to be honest I don't think I'm to blame. It's just that the conditions in Wales haven't been good for the type of photos I'm trying to take.
    I mean, it's no big deal, right?
    But what happens when your photos suck and you're on an assignment for a client? That's what I'm going through in Wales. So as such, I kind of explain the process of working with a photography client and why they might hire someone like me rather than just go into the stocks to get cheap images from a local.
    All that and some epic locations on today's photography vlog.

    I really like how the client as well as others are very understanding when things don't turn perfect especially when things are beyond your control. After all, the effort is one of the most important parts as well as having fun taking pictures!

    LOVE that you're in South Wales! I lived there for 4 years when I was at university and I often go back for the WRC Wales rally GB and have often been stood in a forest watching rally cars! You're making it look awesome and bringing back so many memories for me! I wasn't into photography when I was at uni,, but have been thinking about going back and photographing the landscape rather than rally cars and you've given me so many location ideas - thank you Brendan!!

    Literally cannot believe you drove past my office 😳 epic locations mate. Thanks for showing them off. If I ever meet a Canadian in gower now I’ll assume they know you 😂 both are visually beautiful places but can be very tricky to shoot. I’ve done a few vids there too. Wales is so stunning we’re very lucky. ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    Great point about a visitor having a fresh eye for photographing a location. I've lived in NYC my whole life. It's a cityscape destination for photographers around the world, but I struggle to shoot here. Put me in Shanghai and I'd go nuts.

    Thank you for the great explanation! I have been wondering before what happens if for some reason the conditions are not ideal and the photos aren't as they've expected / hoped for. When you started as a travel photographer, did you just contact the tourism boards after you took pictures, and asked them if they were interested in buying them?

    Rhossili (my all time fave) 3, Cliffs ( I have done a sunrise from there) and Mumbles (best view is from Bracelet around the corner).. you just had bad luck with the weather. When the light is shite think Black & White - I go out with an 85 year old mate who has always had that thought in mind - and it works. Pity you didn't get along to Nash Point either, its a cracking location.

    Wow! Frustrating when you have such an epic and beautiful location and the lighting just isn't working (3:30). Those shots on the cliff could have been really amazing..you have a great attitude about it though. I would have marked that spot as a 'place to come back to' as well. Maybe next time...thanks for sharing...safe travels.

    Start watching Adam Gibbs youtube channel. He also has days where the weather doesnt work out but he still manages to capture bangers. I think you need to just challenge yourself to change up how you photograph a certain location. I get in the trap where I have a vision and it doesnt work out and I dont want to change things up but sometimes that is your only option.

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would second that, and add that sometimes you can save a meh image with creative shooting or processing. For example, exposure stacking that seascape last week with the blown-out sun. He could have underexposed the sky and gotten a nice starburst effect on the sun, then combine that with a properly-exposed foreground. That's a hard image to capture in one exposure; it requires time and patience in both execution and processing.

    Hello everyone, Wow I still find it hard to believe a photographer would struggle with different kinds of light. Why do people feel they can only shoot in perfect lighting and conditions? Every type of light presents a unique and amazing opportunity. A so called Hero shot can be had at any time in any type of light. The worlds greatest photographers all talk about how they never wait for the so called perfect light.I go out in the pouring rain and get amazing shoots so I'm always a bit confused when I hear stories like this. Great video. Love your work👍👍😎😎🌹

    • @SteveKleinheider
      @SteveKleinheider 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree 100%! If a photographer primarily relegates themselves to only shooting at sunrise and sunset...the photos all begin to look alike to a certain extent. Good photographers can capture good images no matter what the light conditions are...in most cases. Sometimes the "magic" just happens when you least expect it! That being said...I think Brendan is being a bit hard on himself to say his images captured during this video "Suck"...they don't. Good luck Brendan...looking forward to seeing more of your excellent work!

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree 100% with your comment. But when there's an expectation of a certain type of image (ie: travel) it does make it a bit more complicated. Thanks for watching and the support!

  • @tvariuness

    this is good stuff. i would add that one of the things i do when i travel photog is do different types of shooting. granted i'm selling my photos direct and to office clients but i think the idea is still a good one. don't just shoot the epic sunset and sunrise. do some street, architecture, long exposure, night photography b&w and stuff. of course this doesn't apply to having a client who specifically wants a particular thing. this is why i tend to shy away from that. i prefer to shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot and then shoot some more. once i have a few thousand images of different types of focuses, i select the best of the bunch, edit and sell them.
    nevertheless this is/was a good lesson.

    Too bad that you didn't get a chance to get out to the "Mach Loop" while you were in Wales. It may not be your usual type of photography, but it is definitely turning into a tourist destination.
    Having said that, I think you are becoming your own harshest critic. The light is going to do whatever it is going to do, and whatever the light conditions, a carefully scouted and composed image is a fair representation of the area at a given time. Sometimes you get clear blue skies, sometimes you get pea-soup fog. Both make legitimate images.

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BrendanvanSon I don't think that the schedule for the Mach Loop is available publicly. I think (and I could be wrong) that it is a matter of you go there and whatever flies through while you are there is what you get. FWIW, there is a similar spot in Death Valley California that is known as the "Jedi Transition" that I had the opportunity to go to for a couple days in March. (The Jedi Transition is SUPER easy to get to. You can literally pull into the parking lot & start shooting.)
