First heard this in Quarr Abbey last summer on the Isle of Wight. Saw a choral concert advertised while on holiday and came along. Had never heard any Philip Stopford before, and was absolutely blown away. It was an American choir and Philip was there! Wept through this anthem and then 'Do not be afraid' - it was the most wonderful evening. Thank you. I've been listening to it and singing with it ever since, and have since listened to many Philip Stopford anthems, Love them all.
My high school honors choir sang this last year to open their spring concert. It is beautiful and was instantly one of their favorites as well as the audience! Pretty cool when the "church type song" in Latin is a favorite for all!
Sang this at district chorus a few months ago, we were really struggling to get into the emotion and flow of the song, when our director asked us to relax and sing it with our eyes closed. We did, and once we were done and opened our eyes we all looked around in amazement at the sound we had produced. One of the coolest moments I've experienced in my 5 years of choral education.
I fell in love with this piece, Philip, during the past school year. It seems timeless and moves me to my innermost person. Yesterday I played it at the organ during The Communion. The people were utterly quiet and obviously moved by it. We have no choir during August, so I love using anthems during Communion. I hope you don't mind this "alternate" use. In my opinion, you could edit it and sell it as an organ piece.
Singing this tonight at the Good Friday Service at Grace Community Church Noblesville, Indiana. So moving....especially love the middle section...the beauty of Christ's sacrifice for us.
Just found your compositions.......really lovely. Some great ideas for a Chamber Choir in sing in, and my own ladies choir "Holmchase Singers" in Jersey. Many thanks for uploading. Angela.
Of all the music my children have sung, this is the one I listen to over and over again. When performed in a round in a venue with good acoustics, goosebumps and tears are in the audience, and not just on me! Wonderful, wonderful piece!
Finally! I've been looking everywhere for this version of the song! I sung it in District last year, and I haven't been able to find it since. This has got to be one of the most gorgeous versions of the song I've heard, and this is well performed. Thank you!
Groton Dunstable Regional High School's chamber choir just began learning this song. :) Chamber choir just came back from singing at the summer Olympics in London, and we're working super hard to get this beautiful piece perfected!
Great! I already sang this one, and I can only agree with Bartholomew Upart - the second Bass is wonderful to sing :) I hope to hear and sing more of your music
Philip Stopford does an excellent job of writing music that is expressive but does not get in the way of the words, rather he writes to underescore deftly the words. When he was in Mobile in 2013 we (Gloria Dei Chorale) sang this under his direction. This may, 2014, we will sing it under our normal direction. Looking forward to it.
Where can I find the sheet music? It's not available at the local music stores. Ordering online would take too long and I want to learn the music now. I can't just hear this beautiful piece and not sing along.

As a non-religious person I find this piece incredibly beautiful and it holds my heart.
God bless! I just came here because I love Collin Mawby's Ave Verum Corpus. Maybe you would too
One of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard... I'm suggesting this for our choir next year. Just breathtaking.

I remember that! It was amazing! I was crying by the time we were done.
Oh, you must be a soprano then... :)
Well, I'm naturally a soprano, but I generally try out as an alto :P I'm pretty cowardly when it comes to auditions...heh
I'm the same way. I'll be super confident but as soon as I step in to the room I'm nervous
I'm always nervous for an audition...but I'm also always afraid that I'll crack if I try out for soprano parts, so...yeah...
Softly, swelling, sounding so well in the only space for it, a cathedral.
Sounds; voices, from so far away in time; here now.
Thanks you!

Me too. It touches my soul. I sit here on my couch and cry.
I'm a big fan. Love the Bass 2 line. O dulcis and when we go down to the low d is so russian bass.
Every time I hear this I am in tears. Thank you.
Very nice and also lovely to see the unusual architecture of Belfast Cathedral, which I believe is called 'Romano-Hispanic'.
This is sublime. What manner of harmonies are these? Astounding.
My soul swells, and brims over as tears.
It's a true masterpiece!

I like that, I like that; this music si reposante et à la fois tonique pour l'esprit.

I chose this piece for a senior conducting project at our high school... I can't wait - it's one of my favorites!!! :)
it makes me cry!
Awesome!
I'm singing this song in the world choir games, its just so beautiful, the notes, the arrangement, the conducting. I love it!
A beautiful piece that is a joy to sing and conduct and never fails to move me.
I heard Cantabile from Jersey singing it in rehearsal at Winchester Cathedral - hooked!
I would sure like to sing in a cathedral. Must be wonderful.

My school's chamber choir just sang this song tonight! I loved it... It's so beautiful!
beautiful! so majestic. love the raw beauty achieved by the absence of sound equipment and the use of tremendous accoustics!
this makes me feel better.
Sang this for a competition a few years back. The beauty of this song is still etched in my mind
Breathtaking.
It is beautiful, touched my soul. tears down...

@theonlyashleymonroee in north carolina???
Shame the recording stutters at the "O dulcis" @ 2:22
@theonlyashleymonroee Ohh! me too! Ensemble geek now :P
Shame about the dodgy edit at 2:20... and some iffy Latin pronunciation, but otherwise, lovely!
You should have heard the pronunciation in the pre-dodgy edit .....

is SAATTBB your favorite voicing?
@@SethEngel No, I like all voicing, although SSA or upper voices is the most challenging.
