I made a specialty funnel to fill transmissions and gearboxes. A small section of 1/2” copper with a 90 degree bend connected to a clear plastic hose with a funnel on the end. Hose is 1m long so I can fill up from the engine bay. Been in service for 25 years 😎👌
lol sorry but I laughed out loud when you spilled the oil. If we haven't all been there a thousand times before, and had that exact same reaction. Funny when it happens to someone else.
We have heaps of those syringes for our son as well. I’ve found them really handy for so many things around the garage. One of the best uses was drawing up silicone grease/paste and attaching one of those straws that screw on the end. Then I could get the paste into really hard to reach places and it was great.
And then, if you were my dear-departed grandfather, you'd put the old oil in that weed sprayer and 'take care' of all the weeds out the back of the shed... 🙄
I usually grab both fuel filters if I'm servicing a vehicle and there are two options. Because Murphy's law, if I don't get both, I always pick the wrong one.

I now always remove or at least loosen the trans filler plug before dropping the pan. After dropping the pan first and finding that someone before me had rounded the plug off.
playing cars on the driveway. especially if thinking of changing oils in transmissions.. i reckon i'd be adding a drain plug to the pan, and getting an oil pump and 20L drum of fluid. the transmission mob in Geelong that did one of My trans services 20yrs ago on an EB XR6 had the cooler lines sucking from clean fluid from memory and the old fluid pumped into a waste drum.. said it took 20Litres before the fluid ran clean(was almost black)

As an AU tragic, sadly I remember too much about them 😂 The filters differ from solid axle to IRS. The double end thread filter is for the IRS models, not relevant to age. Just a tip for anyone changing their filter.
I cut some off the end of my funnel so that it sits down in the filler properly. I even found a cheap one that when you cut some off the end it will then screw in where there oil cap was with the same thread.
I've had the same STM Tom thumb pump for years. Touch wood as I'll use it tomorrow or Wednesday but have never had an issue apart from having to tip the bottle a bit and the thread seems to fit nothing 😂

Plus 1 for the 60ml around the shed. Bit of clear PCV on the end makes them handy AF for draining M90 snouts, Brake reserviors even when I service the mower and genset to make sure the motors have the exact amount in them.
The cat is beautiful. You just demonstrated exactly why I plan to fit weld in drain plugs into my BTR’s. I think the EF1 was the last Falcon with a trans dipstick. EF2 didn’t. Quite PITA really. I invested in a trans oil filler pump. Certainly worth its weight in gold. Looking forward to to seeing what you can do with this Falcon.
Couldn't see the comment already , but you have to start and run the engine at least TWICE after filling to top auto filler plug. You can get up to 1L extra fluid in and the BTRs are sensitive to low oil levels !!!!!! You are of course running at least 1 aftermarket tranny oil cooler ?? 2 would be better !! Have done all this on a fairly regular basis , including one AU we did 12s for $1200 with .
Yeah, I've got some experience with the BTR, and I'll top it up before we race but I need a helper to make sure the car won't drive off while I'm under it.

Scotty, mighty fine diesel oil in that transmission. Instead of screwing around with the syringe, if you have a compressor, wind the regulator as low as you can 2 or 3 psi drill 2 holes in the lid get some clear plastic tube that fits tightly in the lid, put one hose in the transmission and your air blower on the other hose pull the trigger this should fill the transmission in no time, works on diffs engines
Get yourself a 2.5L - 4L penrite bottle pump, they screw onto your penrite bottle. They have a metal 45 degree nozzle on the end of the hose which sits in the filler hole perfect. Best $22 ive spent.
Nice work Scotty👍👍. My old mechanic mate taught me a trick about adding oil, tip the bottle sideways & it wont gurglle & spill had to watch that bit again you did tip it sideways oh well my mistake seems it still can spill tipping it sideways

Scotty the only thing missing from DIY servicing is the beer! I've got 3 Holden utes (2 VY's & a VE) and a Mazda BT-50 dual-cab so you should see my driveway every couple of months! One thing you should have done to the engine is either use an engine flush or put some diesel oil in the engine & give it a run around to get rid of any build up. Also when you get the chance, enlarge the holes on the PVC valve. That'll stop any build up in the engine.
I can remember when transmissions had drain plugs in the sump and a tube which held the dip stick and we could fill the transmission that way, good old days
Drill 2 holes in lid of oil container run one to auto other from air compressor use low pressure is a good way for those pain in the rear boxes with no filler tube 😊
Need to get yourself a garden weed sprayer Scottie and just remove the sprayer head dump your trans fluid into it and pump away or like me put a tyre valve in it and connect it straight to the compressor.
Thought you'd crank a turn on the s5 solenoid .. run allll the line pressure! A cheap 10ltr weed sprayer is ideal for filling transmissions. Just remove the wand 👍 shits all over those tom thumb pumps
I remove all the auto solenoids out of my turbo wagon and cleaned them out with Wd, and fitted them back in with the oil chambers lined up of course but 1-2 is still bot clunky and the pinion bearing i think whines a little. 😵💫probaby more lucas additive mixture.
@blownhemi honestly looking at the old fluid that came out I'd be doing a flush on it will help it survive much better as just a change only gets about 60-75% of the old stuff out, stiffen it up then
Also a supercheap auto funnel fits nicely into a garden hose which works perfectly if you run the hose from the enginebay into the fill plug of the trans while its idling to fill it from the top
Thats odd how they used 2 type of filters my s3 forte is i think july 2002 & has a barb at one end & the fitting at the other end but my GF's AU Fairlane which is Aug 2002 has fittings at both ends
To stop backyarders doing oil changes, then refill to full on the dipstick and call it done. Which results in low oil and warranty claims, after initial fill you should run the engine so the converter can fill. Then top up while still running.
No engine flush Scotty……? The old filter was genuine, so somebody was being careful with it at one point PS - when you were cleaning the pan there was a headliner with a plastic console in it Still those plastic consoles are worth couple hundred bucks on eBay……..

The atf on the driveway is why i always go an aftermarket pan. The extra fluids great but so is the drain plug most of them have.
Hi Scotty I always refill the auto fluid with a garden hose and a Funnal from engine bay down to automatic transmission. Takes a less time
A cheap hand pump from super cheap is about 10 bucks and it's super easy.

Ah yes, old blocked trans filters on AU's. Nothing like waking up on a cold morning to be greeted with 5 neutrals.
I use a weed sprayer for oil, fill it up then pump away it flows easily in with minimal spillage. I hate oil on the floor like air leaks.

Hot tip take the plunger out of the syringe and use the barrel of it as a funnel to fill bag
Scotty, i usually get a length of hose and a funnel. It does make a bit of a mess pulling the hose out when I'm done, but you can stand and fill

+1 for the Tom Thumb. I have one for diff and gearbox oil and one for auto fluid, have had them as long as I can remember.
Scotty do they do a trans kit for that box. Used to be a reasonable cheap way to improve shifts i.e. quicker times. While you already had it apart.

From experience buy a under bed plastic storage tub for dropping transmission oil into, saves a mess.

My 95 EF Futura has a dipstick yet my 96 NF Fairlane doesnt
My 96 ef series 2 ghia has 180k on it and no dipstick. I believe it's the original transmission.

Ef 2 ford stopped the dipstick. I had a 5/95 which had one and a 6/95 car I bought for parts and it didn't have one

Not sure if anyones commented this but if you tighten the S5 solinoid half a turn you’ll get much faster and firmer shifts

Don’t throw away your squeeze pack as that is a great way to refill those bags again

@ I needed one for my BA Fairlane used was about $200 all faded etc and I had to go new old stock for 400 bucks
Don't see why they never put drain plugs in most newer transmissions
