I'm trying to make the same decision. I prefer Yamaha's AP / EP sounds especially in a live gigging situation. But the Roland DS88 has better key action and it's user interface is friendlier and better for real time control than the MX88. Additionally there's the schlep factor; the DS88 unfortunately weighs ~5 pounds more and is ~5" longer than the MX88. Decisions, decisions...
Juno all the way. No point getting a keyboard that is hard to use and has a terrible interface. It'll just slow you down and take your attention away from making music.
I also like the Juno DS88 action more than the MX88 action (DS88 is Feel G and MX88 is Graded Hammer Standard or GHS). Despite that, I returned my DS88 because the keys returned too much energy back into my hands when they bottomed out. I'm still searching for the right keyboard. I've looked at the Kawai MP7, Kawai VPC1, a Motif with Graded Hammer Effect (GHE), Studiologic SL88 Grand, etc.
Nice demo. I'm sold. Except it's a little too pricy for guys on fixed income. Maybe after a few more gigs...but! This synth is 5 years old already (it's May 2023). Price ought to come down, or they should have an updated version... I mean, it's 5 years old. I'm still rocking' my S80 from 2000, and aside for some patches losing voices (weird how a few patches that have 4+ voices and 1 of the voices no longer plays, so it's time for the replacement. I love the way it plays, but it's heavy as a tank on a battleship...), the instrument held up over 20 years and hundreds of gigs. I love Yamaha, and have had lots of the gear, since before the DX-7! Hey Yamaha, how about an artist sponsorship/ endorsement deal?? They ought to be trolling these boards for sales leads and product ideas. I got a million of them..
i bought a S80 used for like 250 with a some broken knobs and some keys occasionally got stuck but loved it the feel of playing it and weighted keyes helped me improve a lot but yes it's was so heavy man
Unlike the MoxF8, it doesn't look like the MX88 has any dedicated knobs for real time EQ control for live performance. The MX88 also doesn't appear to have any dedicated or at least assignable knobs for volume of control of parts in layers or splits either. It looks like with the MX88 one has to do menu diving and/or multiple button pushes to accomplish these very basic live performance tasks. For these reasons, even with the added workstation complexity and cost, I'd probably be inclined to go with the MoxF8 for live gigging.
GOT ME LOOKING AT IT BUT I WANT DRUM PADS LIKE THE KORG KROSS HAS...I WOULD BUY BECAUSE OF THE SOFTWARE BUT I ALREADY HAVE THAT....NICE BOARD NICE MOTIF SOUNDS FOR A HOME STUDIO SET UP.....
Wow, this unit, what am I looking and waiting for? It is nice for gig. Finally, The Yamaha mx model offer 88 keys version. I'm so excited about that. So, I will skip for korg kross88 keys unit.
His playing is so good, I had a hunch he had released his own stuff. I just read that he did "Jazz Piano for the Soul", but I haven't found it anywhere. Anyone know where I can find his stuff? It belongs in my home.
So I want to learn how to play but I'm thinking this is a bit advanced. I just want to learn how to play music and record at home, I dont want to do any live performances or anything. Should I look for something more basic? I just don't want to spend too much money on something that I may not get the full use out of.
This is late but i would recommend getting a cheap 88 key keyboard, there are a lot of older casio pianos that are still good. The only downside would be a lack of weighted keys, which would cost extra. The mx88 is more of a producers keyboard but it works fine if you are learning too. Although like I said until you are sure u wanna get more into piano, a cheap 88 key would be the best
I'm sorry, but Nobody beats Yamaha's grand pianos. I've played and heard almost every brand and model keyboard/Workstation and everyone else can't seem to get rid of that digital sound. You can close your eyes with a Yamaha and think you are listening to a real grand piano.
I had a P-115 and an MX-49, sold them both for the MX-88 and haven't looked back. Love it, love it love it! Now, I have a question on editing voices. Rather than explain technically, I'll tell you what I'm trying to do: My band is covering Toto's Africa and I'm doing it note for note. I've got the keyboard split - the lower end is the brass pad that's perfect. The upper end has the pan sweet flute (can't remember exactly what it's called). I'm trying to add a glockenspiel or vibe to the flute sound to get that distinctive sound of the hook and the solo. I don't think I can layer an already split sound (either split or layer), so I'm trying to go into the edit parameters and see if I can add something to that flute sound (nothing in the presets does it). Any ideas?
I have an mx88 and cannot get this piano tone. What settings are being used here? As far as cutoff /resonance etc? Mine seems to sounds muddy at times, especially during full band performances.
I hope it can Also Connect with FL Studio ... That will make this Masterpiece Perfect .... But the One thing I don't like is the fact it doesn't come with it's own Speaker Embedded in it .... But oh well , I ma try and purchase it anyway
Works lovely with AurioPro and Cubasis2 on iPadPro. I have a Blue MX49 [still miss buying a White] and plan to buy either MX88 or MODX8 !! Still, MX is SO easy to just plug in and use and tons of FM fun !! #HHNET #YamahaRocks #MX49 #MX88
Not even watched this video yet but based on past Yamahas, I'm going to guess that "deep controller integration" is only true if your "favorite computer music software" is Steinberg's (owned by Yamaha) Cubase.
Blake very nice video, in the owners manual pages 29-30 it tells how to Changing Voices smoothly while performing but for some reason I can’t get it to work for more 2 settings, it shows the abilities to do 1-16. Could help me out? Thanks
Once I have plugged into the MX88 via USB cable to download the 250+ voices / effects, do they now reside inside my table ?? Does said tablet have to be APPLE ? or will android work too? Will the FM ESSENTIAL APP work in a stand alone mode on my TABLET? Can this FM ESSENTIAL APP be used for a Guitar / an electronic saxaphone ?? other instruments ?? Does the MX 88 have a Theramin simulator of some sort ??? Tom Houston
Hello, great questions. The FM voices are on the tablet. It does have to be an Apple/iOS device, it will not work on Android. It will work with limited functionality without the keyboard connected (only 10 voices). The FM Essential app has no compatibility with other instruments. The MX88 does not have a theremin patch. Hi MeseekingYah, great question! The MX88 absolutely has built in transpose! It also has the standard 5-pin MIDI in and out on the back of the keyboard for interfacing with other synthesizers and keyboards. If you want to dig in further or talk about some other keyboards, I would love to chat, just give me a ring! Before reading the description, I jumped to the conclusion that "MX" meant a blending of "Montage" and "KX," not "Motif". Is Yamaha likely to create a model which contains these sounds in a slim, battery-operated, 61-note keyboard chasis that would compete with the Roland Juno DS61? Why the DX-100, instead of the 7?
Looking for feedback...I am considering the MX 88 to replace shlepping my 60+ pound early model Motif for gigs. However when I last was told "this Yamaha.....whichever....has all the same great sounds as the MOTIF"...then I demo'd said keyboard.....the richness/polyphony was not there....hoping this one delivers but the demo above is not coming across well enough....so I'll have to go try it live. Looking for any feedback I can get for someone who has a snobby standard like me...That's why I continue to carry that monster around! Prior to that in younger days I had to carry both pieces of a CP 70 up to a 3rd floor apartment! oiy!
Hello, I have a Yamaha MX88. I bought an expression pedal and can't find any tutorial to set it up. Could you tell me how to do it? My wish is to have 2 sounds (for example, piano + organ) and to be able either to switch completely from one sound to the other, or to have only one sound and to evolve, using the pedal, towards the 2 sounds mix. Help, I'm lost! In advance, thank you for your answer. PS: I consulted the documents sold with the piano, there is no explanation in them
Hi, Lionel! Thanks for getting in touch. You should be able to assign the expression pedal to control the volume of each Part in your Performance. It wouldn’t be covered in the basic Owner’s Manual included as a booklet with the keyboard, but the more detailed Reference Manual and Data List are available online and will give you the info you need to do this: usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/0/892960/mx49mx61mx88_en_rm_b0.pdf usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/0/892970/mx49mx61mx88_en_dl_c0.pdf I looked for a video tutorial on doing this with the MX series, but wasn’t able to find anything. Basically you would consult the Data List to find the corresponding parameter for the volume of each Part you want to control via the expression pedal, then assign the pedal to control it following the procedure outlined on page 52 of the Reference Manual. I hope this helps a bit. Feel free to contact me directly with further questions, and thanks again! Caleb Lowrey, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1620, caleb_lowrey@sweetwater.com
Thanks for this great video. Question about programming drums. I have a performance with Rock drums 017 set. In the middle of the song, I'd like to change the drums to be just a kick drum... Can I duplicate 017 and take out everything except the kick? ... I was thinking I'd have my performance with 017 drum pattern... Then on the fly I'd switch to a performance with the same instrument settings except with a different drum pattern (017, but just the kick part of it). ... This will allow me to continue to play melodic notes with left and right hand with the stripped down drum beat. Is this possible?
To be clear, I'd take out everything in 017 except the macro beat of the kick ... just for the bridge of the song. Then switch back to the full 017 rhythm pattern after the bridge.
It's neat that you can make all of these sounds with this keyboard, but the user interface leaves a lot to be desired in terms of accessing all of that capability. It's quite spartan. Even my DGX-650, which is a cheaper model from Yamaha, has a far better user interface than the MX88.
Hi! I have a P125, but I'm looking for a synth with a wider variety of sounds (which this obviously has) that is better in terms of portability. I'm on the fence between the MX61 and the MX88. The reason I might go with the MX61 is the size difference... I love 88 keys, but I don't want something that's too heavy. Is the MX88 lighter than the P125? Thanks in advance!
Hello! The MX series are terrific - these keyboards are derived from Yamaha's famous Motif line, and have a TON of excellent sounds built in. The MX61 and MX88 are identical except for size and weight - the 88 weighted keys puts the MX88 at 30.6 lbs and the MX61 weighs only 10.6 lbs, due to its unweighted synth action keys. For reference, your 88 key weighted P125 weighs 26lbs. If you'd like to go into more detail, please call my number below. Thanks for your interest! Is it possible to load MOTIF XS voices into the MX88? AFAIK the MX has the MOTIF XS engine but I can't find any references or discussion that would confirm this.
Hello! Great question! Unfortunately, there is no way to load Motif XS voices onto the MX88. If you have any other questions, let us know. Thanks! Jason Filloramo, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1281, Jason_Filloramo@sweetwater.com
@@sweetwater Thanks for replying. 24 hrs of research and I had to drop all my illusions about this "synth". It's like a car that only drives on special roads and only runs on fuel specially made for it, and not very well either. I think someone should sue Yamaha for this MX scam they're running. Associating words like "MOTIF" and "synthesizer" with this thing is surely considered shady business practice in some jurisdiction somewhere.
Hi, Daniel! Thanks for your interest. Yes, I’d say the MX88 is similar to the old S90 XS in terms of the selection of sounds. It certainly is a lot lighter! I think it would be a great choice to take to live shows in place of the older, heavier instrument. Hope this helps, and feel free to contact me directly with further questions! Blake. I have both the MX88 and MX49. Is there any way to delete all 128 of the factory performances? None of them are useful to me and I'd rather have the memory slots for my own performance setups.
Great demo! Please tell me what kind of speakers that you are using? Are they powered speakers and what is the minimum wattage for this powerful keyboard? Also can I get away with one speaker or or is it best to just have 2 speakers? Thank you very much. What a wonderful sounding piano! Also, proud to be a long time Sweetwater customer as well😊
Hi there. That is a great question! It is hard to tell which speakers were used for that video, but there are tons of different options out there that would really pair nicely with the MX88. Something like the Spacestation keyboard amp would do nicely, as that would be a one speaker solution that would offer a stereo field for the keyboard. Let us know if you have any more questions on set ups for the MX88, we would be more than happy to help out! Maryann Shirley, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1774
OK Players. I have a technical question. If I layer the keyboard for a Piano sound with a layered String sound...how do I set it so I can bring in the strings by pressing the foot controller pedal? Please help.
Hi, Keyboardman! You can assign the foot controller to control a variety of parameters on the MX88, including the volume of individual parts. Detailed instructions are available on page 52 of the Yamaha reference manual, which you can read at this link: usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/0/892960/mx49mx61mx88_en_rm_b0.pdf Thanks for your interest! Hi, thanks for your interest! Yes, the keys on the MX88 are slightly heavier in the lower octaves, just like an acoustic piano. Yamaha’s term for this is “graded hammer action,” so anytime you see that phrase in the description of one of their instruments, it does have that feature. Feel free to contact me directly with any further questions, and thanks again! Caleb Lowrey, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1620, caleb_lowrey@sweetwater.com
Other than the FM Essential app, can the MX88 keyboard control other iPad synths such as Korg Gadget through the same USB input and have the audio come out through the MX88 as well?

I also like the Juno DS88 action more than the MX88 action (DS88 is Feel G and MX88 is Graded Hammer Standard or GHS). Despite that, I returned my DS88 because the keys returned too much energy back into my hands when they bottomed out. I'm still searching for the right keyboard. I've looked at the Kawai MP7, Kawai VPC1, a Motif with Graded Hammer Effect (GHE), Studiologic SL88 Grand, etc.
I've got my eye on this one great price $999 pretty much everywhere
9:46 very nice choir
..really great playing!!!
Yamaha MX88 vs Yamaha MOXF8 that's what I wanna see
Moxf8 is better
You play beautifully
Thanks ... love your playing
love my new MX88
Well done Blake ! :)
WTF!!! That sounds gorgeous man! Im in love with this keyboard😍
Nice demo.
This is great a cool instrument!
I nearly fell asleep several times watching this and I was interested!
HAPPY SYNTHESIZER!!!
9:48 Am I in heaven?
lol XD
That's when you pay all of your bills
GOT ME LOOKING AT IT BUT I WANT DRUM PADS LIKE THE KORG KROSS HAS...I WOULD BUY BECAUSE OF THE SOFTWARE BUT I ALREADY HAVE THAT....NICE BOARD NICE MOTIF SOUNDS FOR A HOME STUDIO SET UP.....
This is the younger Brother of Motif XS.
Wow, this unit, what am I looking and waiting for? It is nice for gig. Finally, The Yamaha mx model offer 88 keys version. I'm so excited about that. So, I will skip for korg kross88 keys unit.
unless you are strictly a pianist, this has just about everything you need.
unless you are strictly a pianist, this has just about everything you need.
Hello Blake, which are the main differences between MX88 and MOXF8? The hammer action is the same? which feels more like a real piano?
I'm sorry, but Nobody beats Yamaha's grand pianos. I've played and heard almost every brand and model keyboard/Workstation and everyone else can't seem to get rid of that digital sound. You can close your eyes with a Yamaha and think you are listening to a real grand piano.
Well after the SY77, might be my next synth...
Any ideas?
You need the Melas editor for that.
This guy is so smooth with his playing
I have an MX61 and a MOX6, I really wish the different categories were as easily accessable on the fly in the MOX as they are in the MX :-(
wow nice. looks great.
I have an mx88 and cannot get this piano tone. What settings are being used here? As far as cutoff /resonance etc? Mine seems to sounds muddy at times, especially during full band performances.
I don't know
What are you using for sound reinforcement (amplification, speakers,..)?
Is there an instrument list for the MX in Cubasis2, so thst you can select the MX's directly in Cubasis? Cheers
Tom
Houston
Hello, great questions. The FM voices are on the tablet. It does have to be an Apple/iOS device, it will not work on Android. It will work with limited functionality without the keyboard connected (only 10 voices). The FM Essential app has no compatibility with other instruments. The MX88 does not have a theremin patch.
Thanks!

Great video! Does this 'board have the ability to transpose, and is there an in/out for MIDI and not just USB?

Prior to that in younger days I had to carry both pieces of a CP 70 up to a 3rd floor apartment! oiy!
what'd you decide on?
i like mx88
It wouldn’t be covered in the basic Owner’s Manual included as a booklet with the keyboard, but the more detailed Reference Manual and Data List are available online and will give you the info you need to do this:
usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/0/892960/mx49mx61mx88_en_rm_b0.pdf
usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/0/892970/mx49mx61mx88_en_dl_c0.pdf
I looked for a video tutorial on doing this with the MX series, but wasn’t able to find anything.

@@sweetwater thank you ! I'll try
Hi ! Thank you for this video ! I have a question : Is there a loudspeaker on this piano ?
Laurie Riie I also have the same question
Shame they didn't just add the FM synth to the MX!
hi can you use this as a controller for mainstage 3? if yes how is the setup done?
His voice is louder than the piano's sound :v
It's neat that you can make all of these sounds with this keyboard, but the user interface leaves a lot to be desired in terms of accessing all of that capability. It's quite spartan. Even my DGX-650, which is a cheaper model from Yamaha, has a far better user interface than the MX88.
I want Yamaha to make their version of Korg's SV-1 73 key. Analog interface with Yamaha sound.
This is exactly what I want in my life. Something compact and live performance oriented.
Is this the next step up from Yamaha S08? I love mine and I have had it for 11 years, but looking to upgrade.

@@sweetwater thank you so much! Now that I know this, I'll definitely be going for the MX61... and like when I purchased the P125, it will be through Sweetwater 😊
Seemless switching between patches?
Hi Dr. Uke, great question! Notes will not sustain between patches on the MX88, but the time to switch between patches is more or less instantaneous.
Thanks!

Wow!
Thanks!

I have an old but great S90XS buts its just too heavy fro Live shows. Is this basically the same? Pianos and synths etc? But lighter?

Just build a new Performance using performance 1 and then save it under performance 2 to 128.
How do you stop the damper pedal from sliding away from you?

Detailed instructions are available on page 52 of the Yamaha reference manual, which you can read at this link:

Are the keybed felt heavier on low octave and feel lighter on higher octave?
Hi, thanks for your interest! Yes, the keys on the MX88 are slightly heavier in the lower octaves, just like an acoustic piano. Yamaha’s term for this is “graded hammer action,” so anytime you see that phrase in the description of one of their instruments, it does have that feature.
Feel free to contact me directly with any further questions, and thanks again!

Just bought mx88, please I need to know what kind of speakers/sound system is required, thank you
Hi... does the mx 88 have instant recall??
I don't have a DAW I just have nano studio. I want Reason and I need a controller. If I had the money I would buy a Kronos 88
Other than the FM Essential app, can the MX88 keyboard control other iPad synths such as Korg Gadget through the same USB input and have the audio come out through the MX88 as well?
Yes, it can.
I’m new to keyboards so sry if this is a dumb question: can I use this both standalone and as a midi keyboard? I not, are there any you’d recommend?
Hello! Yes, this Yamaha MX88 is indeed a keyboard with built in sounds that can work standalone, and as a MIDI controller when plugged into a computer.
