Thank you for allowing me to visit so many places my age prevent me from seeing. You always highlight the historical spots as well. You’re not Just another TH-camr. Thanks for the quality content. We appreciate you.
Another great walk in Chinatown San Francisco and great murals all over like at 9:49 , 11:12 Bruce Lee , 27:34 😎Beautiful buildings , lanterns and all🙂Thank you for sharing this enjoyable and relaxing premiere A K 🙂👍!!!
This makes me SOOOOO nostalgic. OMGATOS. I could never afford to live in San Francisco again, but I am a native Californian who most definitely left her heart in San Francisco. You've done a great job here. I will watch this again and again. Thank you! 🙏🏻❤️
One of your better videos. I was in Chinatown, SF back in October 2018. Sad to see so many businesses closed. Love this place. Thanks for posting this. Brings back memories.
Woohoo, a dedicated San Francisco Chinatown video! 😍 I enjoyed seeing the Chinatown Gate, vibrant buildings, hanging lanterns, murals, and local shops. 17:03 I ate at Lucky Creation Vegetarian Restaurant before! 😋 19:22 It's such a treat that you got to sample the fortune cookie and to see the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory! 🥠 35:00 It's so cool to see and learn that Bruce Lee was born at the Chinese Hospital! 😎 Thank you sharing this informative walk through Chinatown, AK! 🤗
Excellent tour of SF Chinatown! I worked in the financial district near Chinatown for years. I used to walk up there on my lunch hour. My parents also used to take us to the Far East Cafe when we were kids. It was magical for us. The lanterns hanging from the ceiling and the curtained booths. It’s sad to see it closed. My Chinese American friend told me it was tourist food but we loved it! Another thing - that old Catholic Church on California and Grant is a historic landmark. Old St Mary’s. It was the old cathedral and survived the 1906 Earthquake. Or at least the walls did! It’s beautiful inside and I used to go up there for noon mass on holy days and the pipe organ would be played.
I was born and raised in S.F. Lived in North Beach as a child in the mid to late 1960’s. I used to run around Chinatown with my friends when I was a kid. My Dad would take me to Ping Yueng Restaurant and Bakery on Grant and Pacific. Restaurant has been long gone for many years. I’m surprised you did not walk through Portsmouth Square? Fairly close to where you were. Chinatown is still the same after 55+ years. Thank you for the great memories!
Oh man!! Thanks for this exquisitely beautiful and utterly true picture of my Chinatown. I say "my Chinatown" because everything you so artfully showed holds meaning and memory for me. Thank you so much for visiting!! 😊
Thanks for the video. Having grown up in SF and attended Galileo HS in the 70-80's, this video makes me feel nostalgic for what Chinatown was like in the past. You stated that the video was made on May 23rd, 2023, at 11 am, which is on a Tuesday. 40 years ago, if you stood on the corner of Pacific and Grant Street or Pacific and Stockton, it would have been people-mountain-people-sea [人山人海], even on a weekday. Every shop was open for business and packed with locals and tourists. Chinatown then was just magical!
Nice tour. My connection to San Francisco is My wife and I built the Bush Street Subway in 1993 at Bush and Kearney Streets. Still there as of March 2023. We sold in 1999 and now live in Las Vegas. I learned a lot thank you. I was just there and China Town is suffering. Very Sad.
It was nice to see Chinatown again. As an Irish catholic I remember taking my mum to Chinatown one year and we went into Saint Mary’s. somewhat sentimental but comforting to see again as sadly my mum passed this year.
Thanks for taking me back virtually to the SF Chinatown. I lived for a short while on the border of Chinatown, Nob Hill & the Financial District and used to frequent the the Chinatown branch of the SF Library (where I was one of the few non-Asian patrons!).
I love this video. You take your time and you're good at relating information. Dragons Gate has been there since 1970. I'm so glad the fortune cookie factor is prosperous . I started going there with my family since the 60's. We frequently visited Chinatown. We loved it. It was so brilliant and colorful. In the 70's my husband and I would go up Washington to the Sum Tie Sum Yen restaurant. Fabulous noodles that I still crave. I wonder if the produce market on the corner is open again. It was a raised area maybe 10x10 just teeming and overflowing with fruit and veggies. Just a joy to see. When visiting in 2021, I was told they don't know if the lady is reopening. Thanks again. I miss Chinatown so much!😅 35:00
That was fantastic! Thanks so much for doing the walk. I used to live near that area, on Russian Hill, many years ago, and I loved walking around North Beach and Chinatown. I was surprised and pleased to see that the streets and the businesses look just about the way I remember them. During the pandemic I read so much about homelessness in SF and the problems arising from so many people living on the streets. Maybe Chinatown has its own special ways of dealing with people in trouble. I've subscribed and I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thanks again!
Thanks for the video, along with the history lesson. 175 years Chinatown has been in San Francisco. That's means that Chinatown is as old as the city of San Francisco. The non-tourist part seems to be doing well, but the tourist part could use more people traffic.
California Street is one of the great boulevards on the planet. Back in the day I worked at 100 California St, the bottom of this photo. It was a blast.
This video is so great! Bay Area residents here and have been to Chinatown many times, but never to Stockton Stree area or the Sun Yat-Sen statue in St.Mary's park and the Bruce Lee hospital..but we went last weekend cause of your video!! and saw all these "new" places!! Thanks for this video! 😊
Great walk Ken, now your in my neck of the woods. Only about 3.5 hours East up in the Gold Country of Northern CA. Where James Marshall discovered gold in CA in 1849. Loved this walk.
Ken, thank you for doing this walk around. It's been over 35 years since I've been to SF Chinatown. Glad to see that the place hasn't change much. Nice to see that Eastern Bakery, GG Fortune Cookie Co., are still operating and I recognized many of the shops there. Only the cars and maybe the clothes people are wearing have changed. Xièxiè
I like the ambience, the shops, and especially the architecture. The hills and blind side streets. Hope all will re-open soon. Sorry your State is being so abused.
I grew up in the city and later lived 45 minutes from SF and visited Chinatown many times. I am glad to see that many stores and restaurants are still open. The last time I visited, I had the most wonderful meal but I just can't remember where. For sure, I will visit this summer. Too many nice memories.
We loved this area!!! We visited two years ago. We ate at Chef Hung's on Clay st twice. We were going to go to some trendy tourist restaurant on Grant st and saw several locals going into Chef Hung's. The menu was all in Chinese!! The food was amazing!!!
We were there in February. We had great weather. I always love walking through Chinatown when I'm in S.F. This time it was very quiet. Not a lot of tourists besides us. Normally it is packed.
Thank you for the tour. It has been awhile since I was there. Wish I can visit again but the crimes and drugs issues plus shootings is not a place that I am brave enough to visit anymore. :(
Pro tip: If you are visiting SF and want to buy some tourist trinkets (T-shirts, key rings, etc.) go to Chinatown. The prices are less than half of what they are at other shops around town.
this was EXCELLENT!!!! calming, soothing, good light & historical narration & in stark dramatic contrast to all the unnerving & depressing other footage of SF these days. btw, i thought your pronunciation of "SUN YAT-SEN" seemed off so i double checked; it is in fact "SOON" not "SUN". other than that, top marks!!! that cookie made me hungry. oh yes; you should do ANOTHER as there is still more to cover like it's proximity to "CITY LIGHTS BOOKSTORE" & that tunnel-wall with the incredible stairway. it's been decades so i've forgotten the place names of things... zuòde hǎo!! 做得好!!!🙏🏼
Great walkthough tour video!! Where would you suggest to park a car for tourists coming to visit China Town. I hear so many crimes with break-ins and whatnot in SF. Thanks!
Oh boy do I remember, I owned Harveys Pet Supply store @ Grant & Union during the early 1990's. A magical time for me. Gay may bow & egg custard were so good from the Chinese bakery. Attempting to move back please help!!!
Nice video, AK! Chinatown looked a lot safer than other parts of SF. We are planning to visit SF soon. We were debating whether to drop by Chinatown or not. From your video, we will go there for a visit.
Grant St is geared towards tourists whereas the locals go to Stockton St. The fortune cookie machine is really neat. You see how the cookies are cooked and folded.

Wow the great China Town. I live here now but has Ben in the Bay Area since 1961. I am from a military Asian family

Delicious Dim Sum on Jackson n Stockton is by far the best Dim I’ve ever had !!

San Francisco Chinatown was so amazing to see. I had a great time
A nice video, informative, and a great way to 'visit' such a historic place.

Seems like a lot of elderly there Windows above the building, are those apartments?
Seems quiet, calm

Thank you for the tour. It has been awhile since I was there. Wish I can visit again but the crimes and drugs issues plus shootings is not a place that I am brave enough to visit anymore. :(
Love The Bank 🏦 Of America with the Chinese architecture. Bruce Lee was the boss in Enter The Dragon 🐉! 🐼
That’s right
Bank of America started in San Francisco as Bank of Italy.
Thank you for the extensive equipment list - if only more content makers shared that information the world would be a better place 🙂
Being from here didnt know tbis was one of the oldest Chinatowns I just walk around there and played basketball there but never knew
The better time to video this place may be from noon time to the afternoon when people when people are out to lunch and shopping afterwards.
Very nice
Great job. Love SF with a passion.
Spent some quality time in that vicinity last century.

Grant St is geared towards tourists whereas the locals go to Stockton St. The fortune cookie machine is really neat. You see how the cookies are cooked and folded.
Absolutely
It seems like urine.
So quiet. not many peoples around, compared with couple years ago, every difference.
Great detailed video of Chinatown. One of my go to places I want to visit. How would you compare San Francisco Chinatown to NYC Chinatown?

Interesting/informative/entertaining. Area looks 👀 to be clean/sanitary & well kept-!!!🤗. I wonder why that is-???🤔.
I used to visit SF chinatown with my parents back in the 70s-90s and the streets were packed with people. It seems very sparse compared to what it was like. I have moved away and have not been back in many years. I saw images of Fishermen's wharf and it was deserted. What a sad sight.
We need you in NYC ;-)

He did some live NYC videos a couple of days ago.
@@AngelaB2024 oh ok, I thought that was prerecorded. That’s not enough though😂

I love China Town decorations. It is so gorgeous!
Can you do a steep hills tour video where you walk up the steep hills to the top of the city? (Or you can ride the street car to the top)
5:42 is there people living in the streets?
I love Stockton Street cause it reminds me of East Broadway
It reminds me of East Broadway too!
Thanks for the video
To my dismay
I couldn’t believe the streets are so empty and the shops are closed.
I hope that when this video is filmed it wasn’t on a slow day.
I’m visiting San Francisco next week! How much time should I plan to spend in Chinatown?? Thanks!
Beautiful architecture and street lamps. Not seeing much vagrancy. That is a good thing.
I am seeing a lot of places closed up. Are you there early or have these places permanently closed?
AK ,Chinatown is interesting but what about Japan town
At least they clean up now rhe city

This shows the Chinese people have a lot of class Chinatown is pretty clean❤
Get real. There’s gutter cooking oil on the streets. And rats roaming around at night.
