Rewatching OG Dragon Ball right now, maybe it's best that Toriyama was so hands off, the show is gorgeous and the "forced" sweetness is part of why I adore it so much.
Man, I can't agree with Toriyama on the colors of original Dragon Ball; I literally can't think of OG DB without thinking of the colors and it's always what I imagine reading the black and white manga - vibrant and colorful.
I only really started seeing a legit version of the first 54 Dr Slump episodes and noticed midway right off the bat that the inspiration Akira came up with where the pterodactyl took off with Bulma was originally used in a caveman themed Dr Slump episode where the exact same situation happens but to the teacher Yamabuki... while a later idea of when Gohan would be chased by a T-Rex thus tripping over a rock was earlier used in a scene of Dr Slump where Pisuke's girl he had a crush on was shrank to the size of an ant where a beetle chases after the pint sized girl till she eventually trips over a rock which is where Pisuke saves her... though there may be many more references those scenarios always stuck out the most.
Guau... ¡¡me impresiono este video!! (si pues Toriyama sensei, en cuanto al anime "se supone que todos saben que a él no le importa nada" pero al ver el video no es así)
Yeah, I've seen both, and while I think the fight scenes were done better in 2011, there are some elements in the 99 version (such as the girl who tried to get revenge on Killua on the ship earlier on, or the more gruesome depiction of Killua removing the guy's heart in the tower part of the hunter exam, or the missing details in the pilot episode, or - and I don't remember if this is manga-only or if it was in the 99 version too - the backstory with Kite at the very start of the series) that I really wish made it into the 2011 version. But I think it makes up for it, especially with how much of a strange place the 99 version ended on. And this goes without saying but I REALLY hope that if/when the author continues the manga again, they continue the 2011 version instead of rebooting again, or worse, not making an anime continuation at all.

I always thought Toriyama's comments on Goku's "heroic" portrayal had more to do with how some of the movies/side material were written rather than the series adaptation, or is referencing an idea he pushed over the edge for no good reason. You mean the storm on the RR army, King Piccolo's minions and their leader, Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta, his clowning on the Ginyu force whilst telling them to all go home, and his self-declared motivation to get Freeza off his high horse by humiliating him were ALL driven exclusively by his obsession of just fighting "strong guys"? Give me a break Toriyama. Goku, like most of DB's characters had a growing arc, very well set in motion by Upa's father's death, and by the time Buu rolls around, or even Cell, he's already turned into a responsible and caring adult, his only misstep being not fully understanding his son, but we all make mistakes in our life. Goku feels good with others also feeling good, and it doesn't take a strong fellow to make him put his foot down in case misdeeds are happening. In fact, a common occurrence in Buu's saga is Goku finding the next "savior" of Earth, it being Gohan, Gotenks, even Mr. Satan for gathering the Genki energy and finally, Uub. Why would he even care about Earth needing a savior if all he's interested in is fighting strong people? Just because he saved Piccolo Jr.'s life to preserve Kami's, knowing he could just kick his butt if he threatened Earth again, or because he once asked a favor out of selfishness because he didn't feel like his fight with Vegeta was satisfying enough for him? I think Toriyama needs better worry about a few glaring plot holes scattered throughout the manga than TOEI Goku's behavior, else we get embarrassing shit like Super where character regression is at the order. No,that was just with the films, and he said that YEARS afterwards when he forgot it was HIM who made goku a ultra serious self he was in the z portion. Gt and pre z ball got the balance right of seriousness and when to be care free
@@fridaynightnicktoons6885 Goku, at least to me, seems to be written as kind but not heroic, he will help those who ask him and he would intervene if something bad was happening in front of him, but he is not going around the universe policing like an ultra powerful Batman. Also, he lets Vegeta go just to fight him again.... and Freezer....and he lets Gero build the androids just to fight them...and then comes back just to participate in a tournament when he hasn't seen his family in 7 years....Yeah, idk, I think he was consistently written as someone who is willing to put others at risk just for a good fight. Which now that I think about it, it makes the whole ToP thing being started by Goku in Super a lot more logical, mf always been a dumbass lmao.
It seems Toriyama himself my not understand that Goku’s under-the-surface conflict between his “human” side that wants to fight for others and his Saiyan side that seeks the selfish thrill of battle is the interesting part about him. He constantly seeks peace but also trains heavily and probably almost hopes for the next powerful villain to show up so he can test his strength. That dichotomy is interesting, and the hero side is very important. The “don’t start fights and defend others who can’t defend themselves” is the entire creedo of human martial arts. That’s why he basically just comes off as an uncaring/selfish dick in a lot of the crises in Super, btw. It ruins his relatability. But what do I know, I don’t write manga…
This proves the Bardock special IS cannon thanks to the manga. Remember: If Toriyama his it in the original mangas IT'S CANNON. ANYONE who disagree is WRONG END OF STORY💯
Bardock confronting Frieza and his death is canon, not the rest of the special, though. What we saw in the manga, wasn't retconed in Broly, other than Bardock's design, he fought Frieza's men and confronted Frieza in space,it's just that, the fight and confrontation, was cut from the movie.
The thing is it really doesnt matter what is canon or not. Its an animated series wich is made to entertain you. If you want you can make filters canon. Or make your own canon.
Nah it has two L's, there's a thin line to separate the letters there. Guessing the video must've just displayed for you at a lower resolution perhaps?
Back in the day I saw the anime and bought most of the mangas. The fillers have made the DBZ anime inferior than the manga. About the original Db, the anime really lacks the magic from the manga, the quality difference is even bigger.
The anime also makes many characters like Gohan more incompetent as heros. While the manga makes situations like Goku sacrificing himself in the Cell saga and the fight between Gohan and Buu make way more sense
I think he means in the movies. They didn't always portray Goku's desire to fight, to be for the sake of getting stronger and testing himself as his primary motivation to fight (GT never did) But at the same time it didn't make Goku seem as 1 dimensional as he ended up being in Super.
Goku is more heroic in the filler and movies. One example is in the kaioken x20 scene. In the manga goku only says that he hopes Frieza isn’t bluffing but in the anime he thinks about his family and planet namek th-cam.com/video/2AuKAolRR5g/w-d-xo.html
I get not wanting Goku to be some ridiculous hero savior but at least make him more intelligent and less "derr I just want to fight everyone at all costs". He is supremely unlikeable in Super.
@@jasonone8726 he lost the other aspects of his personality demonstrated in DB and DBZ.. not that he ever had depth per se but now all he wants to do is fight stronger and stronger opponents regardless of the cost to anything or anyone else. In other words he is selfish and shortsighted on a level that I don't think he ever was before.
@sir_john_hammond Dude, you're saying all this based on one arc, which was the TOP and was like 3 arcs ago. By the way, Goku's put everyone's lives in danger before because of his love of fighting back in DB and Z. He let Piccolo go so he could fight him again. He let Vegeta go so he could fight him again right after he nearly murdered him and his friends. He refused Bulma's idea to find Gero's lab and prevent him from creating the Androids so he could fight them right after being told what they would do. If anything, he's put everyone in danger so he could fight strong people, more than he ever did in Super. At least in the TOP, he didn't actually know what would happen to the universes when he suggested it.
I really dislike Goku as the character that Toriyama intended him to be. As the OG creator of the series Toriyama has every right to criticize the anime's portrayal of Goku... but honestly can't help but feel that the changes that funimation made to the show when dubbing it were for the best in regards to the character. Nowadays Toriyama is trying to make dragonball far less serious and more light hearted, but that is not the dragonball I fell in love with. The more I hear what toriyama's intentions were/are with the series the more I wonder "how the hell did I ever think this was cool?"
A lot of the movies battles were so lame, at least up until the new Battle of gods movie I'd Say. The animation and the character art was Great troughout the whole movies, but most of the villains were Simply too strong in ceratin fights, making the match less than two minutes of animation. While the original anime had Epic and long fights with Exchange of blows such as Goku vs Vegeta, Goku vs Frieza, Goku vs Cell, Vegeta vs Buu, Gohan or Gotenks vs Super Buu and Goku vs Kid Buu and so on... An example would be Gohan vs Broly in movie 10, where the brawl Battle last for Only 4 minutes, with Broly almost overpowering Gohan. The new Broly movie instead Is Just Perfect when It comes to battles!
Interesting point, never realised the shortness I guess haha, although I don't really mind it personally. Can't disagree about DBS Broly though, a lot of great engaging action :)
I disagree. I feel like beerus was when the fights lost thier charm. Some of it returned with broly but you can’t say old villains were too strong when beerus is the first movie villain to win.
So why did he mess up Super? Why did he ruin gohan ? Why did he bring back Frieza AGAIN? It just ruins the namek saga & power levels. Why did he ruin goku and regress him back to a kid? Why is the super art style wimpy ? Why is it plastic looking? Why? Why? I rather him never make DBZ if he was going to ruin it sadly
@@jasonone8726 As far as I remember he writes the basic outline for each plot; as in, main enemy, transformations, etc. He just leaves room for interpretation, but he establishes the main elements of each arc, I think.
@thebesto7787 Yeah, but that isn't much. A lot is done by Toei and Toyotaro, with what they add. A lot of the transformations aren't even his, like SSJ Rage, Blue Kaioken, Blue Evolution, Ultra Ego, and Black Frieza.
@@jasonone8726 Wasn't aware of the Ultra Ego and Black Frieza situation, thanks for the info. But yeah, I'd say all parties are just as responsible for Super in general, although reading the OP's comment I can't help but disagree with it. I agree with Frieza being overused, but power levels? They've been unimportant for decades, and honestly, nobody I knew even cared about them. It's mostly the English fandom that does, and I never understood why.
The Dragonball/Z manga is MOSTLY better than the anime. That said Toriyama screwed up from the Android Saga to the end of Dragonball Z. The Namek Saga was his best work in the franchise overall (fact not opinion look it up.) Saiyan and Namek Sagas are great👍 Android and Boo Sagas are trash👎💯

No,that was just with the films, and he said that YEARS afterwards when he forgot it was HIM who made goku a ultra serious self he was in the z portion. Gt and pre z ball got the balance right of seriousness and when to be care free
@@fridaynightnicktoons6885 Very true the “Not a hero” thing really came out of nowhere
@@fridaynightnicktoons6885 The Films are Anime aren't they?
I wonder how he thought of the Funimation English Dub
I'm sure he didn't like it, because he already had an issue with Goku coming off as heroic in the anime, the dub really doubled down on that.
However to this day Launch from the original Dragon ball isn't in DBZ/Super/GT or ANY of the Dragon Ball Z/Super movies at all.
Tbh, all the endless powerup boosts and screaming is way too annoying
I love dbz movies though
This proves the Bardock special IS cannon thanks to the manga. Remember: If Toriyama his it in the original mangas IT'S CANNON. ANYONE who disagree is WRONG END OF STORY💯
Guess you're gonna ignore what he said himself
Bardock confronting Frieza and his death is canon, not the rest of the special, though. What we saw in the manga, wasn't retconed in Broly, other than Bardock's design, he fought Frieza's men and confronted Frieza in space,it's just that, the fight and confrontation, was cut from the movie.
The thing is it really doesnt matter what is canon or not. Its an animated series wich is made to entertain you. If you want you can make filters canon. Or make your own canon.
It's spelled "canon", "cannon" it's a thing that shoots iron balls as projectiles
@@arturosandoval8862 🤣
Is "Dragon Bal" a reference to something or just a typo?
Nah it has two L's, there's a thin line to separate the letters there. Guessing the video must've just displayed for you at a lower resolution perhaps?

Back in the day I saw the anime and bought most of the mangas. The fillers have made the DBZ anime inferior than the manga. About the original Db, the anime really lacks the magic from the manga, the quality difference is even bigger.
The anime also makes many characters like Gohan more incompetent as heros. While the manga makes situations like Goku sacrificing himself in the Cell saga and the fight between Gohan and Buu make way more sense
The fillers were great and the anime aswell. Manga has its benefits but so does the anime.
:)
:))
How did he think Goku was too heroic in the anime? The sub stayed true to what he was in the manga. It was the dub that did that.
We do know one thing, he doesn't like Vegeta
Nope, that's just bullshit, said by the fandom.
I get not wanting Goku to be some ridiculous hero savior but at least make him more intelligent and less "derr I just want to fight everyone at all costs". He is supremely unlikeable in Super.
Unlikeable how?
Toriyama barely writes DB now and I don't know how you think Broly, the Moro arc and Granolah are light hearted. 😂

I disagree. BOG was overrated to me. Nothing in it really happened until Goku actually shows up.
So
No more Korean greetings? 😭
nah he'll be back, someday 👀
Can you please do other series it so obvious your running out of ideas on dbz
So why did he mess up Super? Why did he ruin gohan ? Why did he bring back Frieza AGAIN? It just ruins the namek saga & power levels. Why did he ruin goku and regress him back to a kid? Why is the super art style wimpy ? Why is it plastic looking? Why? Why? I rather him never make DBZ if he was going to ruin it sadly
When it comes to the plastic feel to it, that's Toei's fault. But yeah, the rest is all brcause of Toriyama.
@@thebestonumeritos Not really, Toriyama barely writes Super.
The Android and Cell Saga weren't trash. 😂
