Can’t say I agree with that sentiment but more power to you for enduring through those miles. Sure, I can run the same shoe until the rubber wears off and that might be 1,000 miles. Do I want to? Not really 😂 There are so many new shoes to explore and try out. I purposely retire shoes before end of life just to spend time with the new toys (shoes 😎).
Remember, the general public is in some degree of overweight, suboptimal technique, or anatomically misaligned to the structure of the shoe. I might be all three 😂
I was oddly captivated by your review, watched all the way to the end! I had the speed 1, 2, (Pro 3) and 4’s and did over 300 miles in each. Awesome shoes, personally love the fit of the Pro 3’s over the speed 4’s so wish I had not skipped the Speed 3’s… oh well. Would love to see you try other “little bit of everything” shoes. Maybe like a Novablast? ✌🏻
Currently have 1000 miles on my Speed 2's, and they're holding up great. Want to try some newer versions but can't justify throwing them out yet. Adios Pro 3 have 800 miles (1275km) and also are still good for faster workouts.
I bought way too few pairs of Speed 3 as they fit me so well, but luckily Speed 4 is also rather good. Done 1k+ km on pairs of both, on asphalt and gravel, have held up very well. Strong recommendations from Patrick 💪
Those holes near the right toe are sometimes caused by one of the muscle groups that flex the ankle being weaker than another, forcing the toes to lift. You can search the web or youtube for more info. I am working on strengthening the weaker muscle group but another 'fix' is to try 'Trainer Armour' to patch that area before the shoes start to wear.
❤the videos Patrick please keep it up. Also question: Do you feel like the cycling helped you maintain good fitness compared to if you did not? Thanks 😊
i bought the 4 after your video of the 3. It is in my selection now. Still under 100k. Starting to like it. My relaxed running shoe stays still a zero drop from altra. they are not perfect by far. the escalante 3 is horrible in wet conditions but for balancing the body out and moving over the foot more naturally perfect.
Interesting. A lot of runners have mentioned the 4 was not as good as the 3 ,which I have amd really like . Been doing the eBay trawl to stock up on it but because of your review I will acquiesce and try the 4.
Iv still got my saucony endorphin speed 1 from 2021, I have about 500 miles in them, there still good for speed work outs (in a rotation). I got them for Loch Ness marathon 3h 32m, I was happy with that in my 50s. I was gonna get rid of them, after watching this maybe not 😅
I wish all shoe reviews had this type of miles on them. I don't think running in one shoe can give injuries... unless if the shoe is trying to manipulate your natural foot form.
How are you not tempted for a new shoe after about 500kms? After a pair reaches 200 kms, i am already judging my options in various websites, now i have 8 pairs with an average of 100kms in each, and i enjoy only 3 of them. I must learn some self restraint from you.
I’d be worried that your stride would get more extreme as the outer rubber wears away and therefore less support. That said if I got 1000 miles then I’d say the value for money is good. Most people (including me) change shoes at 300-400 miles. Might try to push my miles per shoe up though!
I'd say it's very different for every single runner. I've never retired a shoe before 550-600 miles and in every case I probably could run a hundred more if I had to (but with my current rotation there is no need to). Then again I know a few runners who can barely get 300 miles from the same shoes that last me more than twice as much. Gait and body weight can really affect midsize/outsole longevity and general feel.
Out of curiosity, what sort of foot strike are you? Wondering how long the rubber on heel will last before disintegrating as they did on yours. I just got the Speed 4 - after having the Speed 2 and Speed 3 I can say its definitely closer to a similar ride as the Speed 2. Definitely looking forward to putting the miles in them
Last year I had a speed 2. I don't know why when the shoes had done 800k, I just tried the half marathon time trial 1:46, the pebax still worked even though the shoe upper looked like it had been in the warzone. The quality of the shoe glue is also bad, maybe because it's made in China 😏
Hi Patrick, I'm going to be running my 1st 'race' marathon (York) this weekend. I was/am planning on running it in my Speed 4's. I've been trying to 'save them' for race day and only been using them for harder workouts and more specifically for long runs but I realised that I've perhaps not been saving them enough and have managed to clock up 300miles in them. They should be fine to run in on Sunday right? They feel fine but just looking for reassurance 😅
I prefer running in my speed 4s as they are great but have heard its not great to always run in shoes with a plate as it can make ur feet, lower legs weaker. So i try to run ones with no plate majority of the time. Does that matter in your opinion or think i can get away with just running in the speed 4s for comfort and enjoyement?
I dont know whether that is true or not. But I believe what you heard was about carbon plates because they’re so rigid to the point you can hardly bend the shoes. These Speed 4s, on the other hand, only have nylon plate. It helps enhance the stability of the shoes without making it rigid longitudinal. I have seen a test on these Speed 4s which shows it takes relatively the same force to bend as ones without any plates.
I did 1300k in my Speed 3s and they are still doing great. So now I know they are just half way 😄. I also have the 4s. No problems with durability, except I got a hole on the inside of the cup for the heel, both left and right in all shoes (3 pairs) already after 100k or so. Very strange. I think you might also like the Boston 12. Not nice for very easy (recovery) runs, so less versatile. But do you ever do recovery runs? They are nice for tempo runs and faster. They have more cushioning under the forefoot, in a positive way, not too soft. Therefore I find them more comfortable on the longer runs, especially in the last part of these runs.
Regarding cycling as a mode of cross training: I think I'm going to be looking at an injury lay off. I have a road bike (with regular non-clip pedals) and am considering getting a turbo trainer. What puts me off is the thought of clip-in pedals and cycling shoes. Do they really make a difference when it comes to using a turbo trainer? Appreciate any advice.
I don't use a turbo trainer, I use a spin bike indoors. It does have clip in pedals and I find them really good to use despite having some reservations like you. So I wouldn't be put off by clip in pedals.
can u go into more of the injuries u said u had? how bad were they? does that make u wnna actually have a rotation to avoid em or u dont care enough? also i saw u talking about cycling here. how often do you cycle ? throughout the week? do u run everyday?
I've had one injury recently to my sacral joint, but probably wasn't down to the shoes, just a bit too much training. I cycle when I'm injured (indoor bike) to keep my fitness up.
Wow! you are an excellent runner but the outsole of that shoe has really had its day! lol And, maybe, because it is tad long, like you say it is, it did not tear near your big toe nail!
Is it true those shoes have strong chemical smell from the foam? I'm asking because thinking of buying a pair but can't deal with strong chemical smell and have seen some comments online about it...?
I absolutely love the Speed series like yourself, I have 1 pair of the v1 and 2 pairs of the v3, all lasting 600k. I thought I was going to hate that Saucony made the Speed 4 more wide and stable but it has grown on me. It really excels as a Long run workout shoe and uptempo. I agree, I also think it's the fastest Speed yet. I doubt I'll get anywhere near your milage as mine normally only ask 600k before the midsole bottoms out 😅
Why you will never see a review like this from a shoetuber: 1. Too many miles to review a new shoe each week 2. This would last over a year based on their actual mileage 3. Once they have found “the” shoe, no need for more reviews Btw, all my Saucony everyday shoes have lasted over 1,000 miles also 🤪
It may take 24-48 hours for foam to decompress and get back to normal. By rotating shoes it is like rotating tires on a car you may get even more life out of them. Also injury risk will be less. Consider looking at Saucony Triumph 20-21, dirt cheap with a slightly different beaded foam, super durable.
Compare this review to the typical "long term 100 mile" review from most TH-camrs lol...Patrick is every running shoe designer's nightmare...
Patrick is the real deal ❤
Now that’s a review. None of this “they’re still holding up after 100 miles but thinking of retiring them (because I get sent so many shoes)”.
I agree but Patrick bought the same shoe again! So, how different is the next review going to be?
@@bluesque9687 different colour, maybe he’ll get 2000 out of it
Both my Speed 2 and 3s and Saucony Triumphs 20 had the same toe hole. All done over 600 miles. Amazing shoes
Best running shoe review I've ever laid my eyes on. Astounding.
Dude, you're the real beast - raw dogging those outsoles until you can see the nylon plate. I'm truly inspired !
I take my trainers to 1000 miles. Dont listen to the shoe manufacturers telling you to change at 250-300 it’s all about profits.

I don't think there is any other more versatile shoe like this one at this price.
After watching this I took my Speed 2 with 650 miles out of retirement 😂

Thank you Patrick. I don’t understand why the 4 is disliked by runners. I believe the shoe is amazing, durable, and every kind of run shoe.

I love mine. Great review.
Some say the foam need time to rest after a run so using the same shoe day in and day out might decrease the lifespand of the foam.
Would love you to review the SuperBlast 2 👊
1000+ miles on on shoe is crazy... might reconsider when to replace my shoes lol

Good vids; enjoy them - but why dont you rotate your shoes? Seems easy done with little benfit not to?
I just like to get the most out of a shoe, but end up leaving it a bit too long!
Because the 4 is longer in toebox is why you haven’t seen hole as toe has a buffer space for forward movement if you know what I mean

They'll be fine. You're used to them, better than trying to break in a new pair in a marathon. Good luck in the race.

Thanks, no I used the Nike Vaporfly 2

Hay Patrick , i want to know that can we run in these shoes without insole , i mean can we remove them while running. Please reply if you can .
The insoles do come out. I'm not sure if you could run in them without, they are quite thick. It would be best to ask Saucony.

Height 6"2 and around 70kg
I stop running in shoes when i feel midsole bottoms out. Then relegate them to walking shoes.
Makes me feel bad that i count down to 500km and then get a new pair!
Did you find the ride imbalanced when you wore through the rear outsole?
I didn't notice really!

Why you will never see a review like this from a shoetuber:
