Actually, the sand referred to in this video is volcanic pumice. It is used to make cement, which is a major export from Java to surrounding Indonesian and Southeast Asian markets. I spent some time there in 2019 before the pandemic. Note that the Indonesian government prohibits large scale mineral mining with earth moving shovels and equipment in order to preserve the manual labor the local population depends on for subsistence. This is also true for volcanic sulfur extraction.
I’m sitting here in my comfy home, shaking my head at watching this hardworking man climb that hill wearing sandals!! These are some hardworking People! May God bless their daily work to make a living for themselves and their families. Incredible.
Or a little dynamite. Large capital investment is not justified for the relatively low regional value of the sand. Capitalism both facilitates and limits our rate of destruction of the environment.
@DPeter oh, I never thought of it that way, good point. However, they could produce 100 times as much sand, that would require more workers, making them all more money. 🤔

It s pretty cool job actually .. Seeing them do what they do I can see things that they already use that could be improved. For one attach the line to a tree or spike driven into the ground, have a waist harness to have 2hands free when using pike on the hillside.

Love the sandals when working around falling rocks...... very perplexing. And no, it isnt a matter of availability. Its a matter of culture. They choose it. And dont talk about they "cant afford it'. They are available.
It’s also the insane heat and other conditions they work in. Also what kind of shoes would you think they need? And how long would the shoes last? Replacing flip-flops every month or so-cheap. Replacing “proper shoes” every month or so-unaffordable for them!
10:00 ...with the unlimited supply of aggregate available, you'd think they'd fix up their haul road to make it faster to travel on, and easier on the trucks' running gear...
Don't cry because you feel guilty. Just appreciate what you DO have and realize that we are all connected, somehow, but that we all do have our own struggles.

Has no one taught them A Better Way even with the tools that they have if they only cut off the top and let it slide down they could just take the tailings of that and not have to worry about s*** falling on them all the time that crazy it's sand and rock just knock it down before you start harvesting it
This wastes an unnecessary amount of these workers' time by being inefficient, due to not using any heavy machinery at all. A single excavator could fill dozens of trucks in a day instead of just two, and only needs one operator. Automation frees up so much time that can be better spent doing other things. This hurts to see.
Destroying some lovely unsorted block and ash flow/basal avalanche deposits (medium grade to outer bend facies) in the Kali Putih/Sat valley from the July 1998 Merapi eruption! Kidding of course, but from a geology point of view I couldn’t help but notice.
I would agree with you...this is the cost of industry and massive populations...we as humans are using up our resources at a rate that cannot naturally be replenished.

A backhoe? It would put a dozen folks out of work! Not a good way to go.

Great job done by these men, for one truck to become full is no joke.
They mine volcanic sand because it is rich of minerals like fosfate etc. It is used as a natural fertiliser.

Roads, glass making, etc
We Westerners are so pitifully uninformed as to what the rest of the world must do to survive! Thanks for sharing!

The last picture of a hill home "Step Rice Hill" quite pretty... And look like the air are fresh too...
Yeah I know it has it downside too...
Yes, the air are VERY fresh!
im perplexed, a little bit of change in setup and they could fill 4 trucks a day in half the time, and spend more time at home.
Because they are not only sand but high mineral soil, they are mined in agriculture to achieve high yields.
If someone moved in there with a even a mini excavator, it would put an entire town out of work!
He has pretty good house for a sand miner
Semoga penduduk kalian semakin maju dan mudah rezeki

Hard honorable work used to build things and be outside with friends.

How this way of mining may be any profitable against industrial mining with excavators?
Francis ngannou grew up working as a child laborer in a sand mine in Cameroon.
That has gotta be the most inefficient mining operation I have ever seen.

Not for nothing but shows like this really show how even the poorest people in the world are able to become obese now.
You can get sand in the river.. not in the mountain.. and much more simple to get
