Hi Margie. Mostly we've just been lucky to not have a lot of slugs here. When some damage does show up, I use some commercial slug repellent. We have a lot of birds in our yard and I'm sure they help keep the slugs at bay. Thanks for the question!
I use short pine needles collected from where ever I can find them. The sharp sides of the needles are not compatible for sliding across ;) I find this most effective because it doesn’t matter if it rains. I have also read that dry pine needles do not raise the soil acidity by much- if at all. The trick is to keep applying each year and surround each plant well enough. (:
We've just made it inconvenient for the deer with fencing. They stay out of the back yard. Occasionally I'll have to spray some repellent on plants in the front. Thanks for looking!

We've collected things over many years.. And, we're very good bargain hunters. For example, that large fountain in the front yard was free. Someone was getting rid of it and just wanted it out their yard. Those are fun things to run across. Thanks for looking!
Hi Kathy. Our hostas along the path that do well have good soil. Before they were planted we added about 6 inches of black dirt. And, they have nice filtered shade. In contrast, our hostas in the front yard were planted in not so great dirt and they are not growing that great. I need to work with them. The hydrangeas mixed in that you see are Annabelles. Yes, we have very sandy soil, but mostly shade. I thought they were Annabelle. But I didn't realize they would grow so well in shade. Thank you for your response
Such a beautiful garden. I notice a lot of mature trees and even a tree line to the back. My backyard backs into the woods and it’s covered with leaves in the fall that keep falling through December. This year I put a garden at the edge of the trees but am super worried about leafy cleanup in the beds in the fall. How do you do it?
Hi Jennifer. I have to admit that gardening in the woods is a challenge. Besides the woods in the back of our yard, we have huge Oaks in the front, a large Basswood and Elms in the back. I mainly blow leaves out of gardens in the fall but I don't really clean up the garden areas totally until Spring. The leaves remaining in the hostas, perennials and shrubs stay over the winter and help protect the plants. Depending on what you have in your garden you might want to clean up more in the fall. The leaves would get blown into the woods in December but I played no part in it. Hi Amy, No, I drag the sprinkler's around and water the pots by hose and wand. Fortunately because most of the yard is shaded it doesn't get terribly dry, but its still a chore. Thanks for asking!
