IMO nothing has ever come close to this jewel of a football game. Something about the ambience and atmosphere in this game was just magical. The flow in the game and the way it looked. Specially night-time games. Really good old fashioned football magic. This game was like World Cup 1994 converted to games: Theres simply a magic to it but its hard to point out exactly what it is. When you play modern PES-games it feels like the players are stuck in some kind of mud when they run. And theres no pleasure in the shooting. But in this game everything was just smooth and fast. PES have sacrificed greatness for so-called realism. And besides i dont see how "running in mud" (thats how I would describe it anyway) makes it more realistic. You couldnt bend your runs in this game like you can now but how important is that really. Letting a shot go from long distance in this game was more satisfying then all 6 last PES versions combined. This game just looked good. The players looked tall and the way they should. PES 2 was like an expanded but less "colorful" version of this and was also nearly as fantastic. PES 3 was even more expanded and made it very interesting as they added official attires for the first time. Then PES 4 came and was a bit disappointing IMO. Then PES 5 & 6 came out and may both very well have been the ultimate versions of this franchise. I would say PES 6 is the ultimate version of PES as it was nearly 100% "officialized" and had the fantastic gameplay we had seen before. Then every game after #6 has just made you long for the old ones. But the first one is still my favorite. And i have to admit i prefer the generation of football players that were still active at this time. They were more concerned with great football than own tattoos.
I totally agree with everything you said. This game just had something special and yeh the players back then were amazing...so many legends. Yeh we have messi and Ronaldo who are freaks but apart from them most players are fairly mediocre and as you say more worried about tats and instagram than footy. Pes 1 - 6 were so good but pes 1 was something else for sure....it looks amazing and has a feel to it that is hard to explain.

When a game gets you in the mood even before you've started playing, and then you get the good gameplay too...well, it leaves you dying to create great memories in World Cups and developing a side over the course of several seasons, experiencing those ups and downs, and of course getting the classic players (in a simple, honest way, being able to try and buy them like you would any other player, albeit some of them were only available after you had won tournaments in cup mode).

Looks just as beautiful as I remember it. Why did they change the camera in later Pro Evos? I don't think any of the subsequent iterations had such a camera view. The aesthetics of Pro Evo 1 are lovely.
Yup pes after 2007 was horrible while FIFA made amazing improvement especially on the next gen consoles X360/ps3. Wish pes went back to its roots from ISS PE2 and make graphical improvements to it. That game was pure joy
