  • Wayland Flowers was best known for the comedy act he created with his puppet Madame. His performances as "Wayland Flowers and Madame" were a major national success on stage and on screen in the 1970s and 1980s.
Madame's many TV appearances included Laugh-In; a long run on the game show Hollywood Squares (replacing Paul Lynde in The Center Square); a recurring comedy skit on Solid Gold. During his stint on Solid Gold, Flowers was diagnosed with HIV and eventually developed Kaposi's sarcoma, an AIDS-related cancer. Despite his illness, Flowers continued to perform. On September 2, 1988, he collapsed onstage while performing at Harrah's in Lake Tahoe. After a brief hospitalization, he visited his family in Dawson, Georgia, before returning to his home in Los Angeles. He then began hospice care at Hughes House. Flowers died there on October 11,1988 at the age of 48.

Wayland and Madame are pretty much unknown here, in the UK, but what a huge talent. The fluidity and realism in the movements is astonishing. Thank you, Raja, for bringing these legends to our attention.

All the brilliant, talented young men, (and other great people) claimed way too early, too soon by AIDS.
Wayland and Madame still had so much to give the entertainment world, but their act was cut short. Thank you for the laughs, Wayland and Madame. Your genius lives on through TH-cam and other media outlets 💕

Yes it was too too too early . sadly . when i was 18 i was with a friend driving in palm springs , we saw a sign hanging a bar saying madame and waylan performing . i was excited to stop and see and we did . we went in and it just started . she was funny i was blessed and amazed i was there . lolo . this was in " 86" . he passed away shortly after . that was shocking that he was gone . to this day i wonder who has madame in their attic . 😢

@@frankromero5581 from my understanding there are quite few different Madame mannequins out there.
He made quite a few different ones with different outfits and hair setups and the like.
Easier to switch Mannequin than to restyle it entirely.
I know at-least one owner is taking theirs to different gay bars in their area and doing impressions of her voice and keeping the memory alive.

It's amazing. Madame has a solid face; she can't do facial expressions, aside from opening or closing her mouth. Yet she still managed to do the perfect look of exasperation when the idiot host asked if there was any romance with Wayland. Was he the only person who hadn't figured out Wayland was Gay?

Growing up in the 70s in Southern Ohio there was this guy named Larry Smith and he had his cast of puppets who were on tv, in fact he had a few tv shows. He had this Charter named Hattie The Witch, and, I wondered if Wayland was from OH, or some how saw Larry Smith's charters or was inspired by him in someway. Because, madam looks very much like the Hattie the Witch charter, especially the exact face and body, only difference is the way there dressed. You know Hattie being a witch, being dressed like a witch and Madam being dressed up in Hollywood glamour.
