Paraphrase: "The slider has less/no damage than the synchro ring." And then goes on to say that's good because the slider is the expensive part. Now I have NO idea if this is true, but wouldn't Porsche have chosen to use harder steel alloy on the (more expensive) synchro ring than on the (less expensive) slider. That way, the less expensive part is the one to bear any damage or wear over time, saving the more expensive part in the process. Which would make Porsche very noble in saving the consumer money in rebuilds. That's smart engineering, but bad business because we all know businesses are in the business of making money. Or I'm completely wrong and just guessing! Thanks again for a great series. Glad I caught it, even though I'm almost three years late to the party!
How much would it cost to replace 2nd and 3rd on a 993 gearbox? My late father always grinded the heck out of those gears. And are you in Los Angeles? Thanks!
Right you are. From all the 930s, the 1989 was the only one to have the G50 five speed gearbox. The thought was that it would be easier to stay on high boost on the turbo with more gears to choose from. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing.
The sad realization is that I could sell my left nut, and still wont make it past the engine with the money I would receive. I gave props for having this awesome car originally, and now that has been trumped with props for affording this rebuild. haha
Just curious. Are you gonna reveal a total cost of this build at the end? I always thought a 930 project would be dope, but the cost for just the car is intimidating enough. Also a friend of mine is trying to make auto videos on TH-cam. Could you check it out and let him know what you think? th-cam.com/video/qUldFGJf7ho/w-d-xo.html It's on my 350z. Might do one about my r32 soon. Any input is dope awesome shit. Thanks.
The things he keeps saying that are worn out are the dog teeth that engage the slider. That trans needs all four syncros all four dog teeth and both sliders. 100 dollars each for the syncros. 150 each for the dog teeth. 250-300 each for the sliders. Gasket kit 80 bucks. The mechanic in this video is a total hack.
+Memes Rock To a degree, especially upon reassembly. But at the end of the day, each part will get a thorough cleaning upon reassembly, if it isn't being replaced. If they handled Peters sloppy shifting for more than a mile, I'm sure the parts will hold up just fine. All components of a transmission are exposed to pretty tough conditions, roughly stacking and dropping them 2-3 inches shouldn't do any harm. Nothing in this video seems to be out of the norm, besides the pry bar scene. D:
+Formulalopez I imagine this car isn't going to be taken on especially long drives, if it isn't a complete tracker. (I don't recall the initial plans). The real benefit of the 5 speed, would be lower RPM's at higher speeds, which results in better fuel economy
I used to work in the trades, and if I had this guy staring over my shoulder, constantly asking me the most INEPT questions and acting like he was perma-stoned, it would drive me INSANE. Pro tip, let the professionals working on your shit CONCENTRATE on what they are doing, record them working for your video sure, but overdub your comments, dont sit there for HOURS and DAYS acting like a burnout. This is painful, and you can tell that the guys working were seriously trying not to get annoyed at this guy.
… why oh why oh why is there music, elevator music, music noise … in the background ….. ? why do people insist on playing music over a how-to-do video while someone is trying to explain something and you do not have a dedicated sound mic over head …. ?
Wonderful videos but there is no need for "Look at that!" "Wow!" Etc for each and every item removed when it is obvious the presenter is not familiar with them in this application. Just maybe ask questions and let the mechanic that knows what he is doing explain. It is one thing if the guy was a clam but in all these videos the presenter comes across like a 10 year old :p It is an annoyance to otherwise superinteresting videos :)
+David Westernall I find the questions very interesting, it is just the same comments beeing repeated every time a mechanic shows a part. It is ok to "WoW!" and "look at that!" when it is something extraordinary but most of the time it is just a normal part and it comes off as awkward/misplaced since it is apparent the presenter does not know enough about the part to warrant the reaction. I comment on it so they can improve on it :) It is probably not something the presenter thinks of and it is easily correctable. Save the "WOW!" for when it is warranted! I love this 930 rebuild series :)
+crabapple1974 Right now he is a 10yr old kid realizing his dream. Besides he is the host commentator owner. I'm sure Pete feels a need to make this interesting to the widest possible audience. To keep everyone entertained. There are poor misguided people who don't get it. Folks who not only don't get it but believe. That's why you pay a pro. Why would you go thru all this nasty dirty crap.
This guy is sharp. Always blows me away when people are this knowledgeable with complex parts.
This is by far the greatest channel on TH-cam. You guys are heroes.
+Steven Barnette Thanks so much! Glad you like our content.
Guy doing the disassembly is incredibly knowledgeable, thanks for the video!
Man this guy has a good memory. If I hadn't had one apart for 10 years I'd be completely lost.
Such an epic build project it just keeps getting better and better.
baller budget sir. i dnt even dare to think how much is already spent rebuilding
How is this channel not got big yet?????? This is my most watched car Channel on TH-cam. Also should make more s14 videos
+Ryan 240sx More S14 vids will be coming soon. I'm getting back to working on it now!
I love the confidence of a master... I'd be labeling every bolt, and I'd still end up screwed.
me too its too damn complex
I still don't understand how you guys are under 100k subs, your videos are always on point. Much love. no homo tho. lol
+RealMadridCR7 Thanks so much! We hope to hit 100K soon!

that little chime melody in the background got really annoying

Nice! Keep the vids coming
so..... who makes those replacement parts?
Transmission? You mean transaxle, right? ;)
Is there a break in period after a rebuild?
Tony is the "Task Master!"
Is this the 4 forward gearbox? Was there a 5 forward gearbox installed in the latest or last of the 930 model?
89 930 was the only year that got a 5-speed, the rest were all 4-spds... if Im not mistaken.
Right you are. From all the 930s, the 1989 was the only one to have the G50 five speed gearbox. The thought was that it would be easier to stay on high boost on the turbo with more gears to choose from. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing.
This guy is sooo hectic :-) Nice video
Are you going to fit an lsd to it?
+brett hollis No plans to, spent all the money on building the engine.
+Speed Academy fair enough, just noticed it has an open diff and thought would have been a good time to upgrade
almost had Tony tune my s13. he's quite the genie, I'll probably end up down at ums at some point
+Jack Truitt He definitely knows his stuff.
What is the nomenclature when searching for one of these boxs?
The sad realization is that I could sell my left nut, and still wont make it past the engine with the money I would receive. I gave props for having this awesome car originally, and now that has been trumped with props for affording this rebuild. haha
Need your help. He (Tony) mentioned flipping the ring gear, I need to know how to do that....
I have 2001 carrera 996 5 speed automatic zf transmission. Im rebuild mine now.
can i change the engine a keep the same transmission?
It depends on the engine but alot or interchangeable.
Forgive my ignorance, is this the infamous 915 transmission?
This is the 930 4-spd transmission.
wish I knew a guy like this
23 nov 2019 7:29 am est:thanks
2:18 show open-differential
so its a 4 speed manual?
+Theogrn Yupp
It's a 930 transmission for a turbo car. The 5 speed is a 915 trans for a 911sc,carrera until 87 then introduced the g50 trans.
couldn't you find a closet to work on it in?
Just curious. Are you gonna reveal a total cost of this build at the end? I always thought a 930 project would be dope, but the cost for just the car is intimidating enough.

always thought that these parts were supposed to be handled extra delicately
am i totally wrong?

why not 5 speed?

+Formulalopez The conversion is very expensive and you have to cut the chassis up to make the 5-speed fit. It makes no sense for a street car.
Thanks for the reply! Had no idea you had to cut the chassis. Idk why I assumed it was as easy as bolting on a g50.
That's literally like an Audi R8 GT3 gearbox... well in design and form only.
70 000 bucks for one though ;)
Not upgrading to a LSD?
+NorevlimitR The funds are too low to invest into one. Spent all my money on the engine build!
Finally, first comment, but 3rd viewer.
1st reply
"Uh, no you're wrong. Cheese is a national pastime."
First pointless negative reply.
Congratulations on finally getting back the "first comment",
First positive pointless reply

Is it normal that I get really nervous watching him pull the gearbox apart so quickly and all I can think is "How will it ever get put back together"
+8700s14 Haha, I get nervous like that all the time. Wait to the dyno, it's as nerve racking as it comes.
should of gone with a S14 series 2 box hehehe
He's Messi mechanic he just worried for impact not. Transmission.
nice video but men, the camera work ...duh
