Tuckerman's Ravine Crash....Face First Slide

- April 9, 2011 - Hiking Tuckerman's Ravine on Mount Washington in New Hampshire along the Chute. A friend and I are standing behind the boulder to avoid oncoming sluff. I was filming for really no reason other than to capture the size of sluff coming down the hill. Then, this guy cuts in between us for, at the time, I thought no reason. That was not the case...
Two seconds later, a helpless girl comes flying face first down the mountain at a barreling speed (40-45 MPH) on a 55 degree slope. Roughly 150 pounds of woman, clothing and ski gear rifles down the hill and continues to take out on an unsuspecting hiker.
Not the best thing to see on your first ascent on Tuckerman's but I did strike gold because I didn't realize i had caught her on film til we got back to the base...
Slow mo around the 35/40 second mark....Enjoi!
That's me in the video! The fall was absolutely insane, I thought I was about to die, no joke. Luckily, I came away with only a busted elbow. Other than some bruising and swelling of my elbow, I'm fine. I also had no idea I hit a hiker on my way down! Definitely glad to be alive!
... got to admit though, watching this the first time just brought back the scariness of the fall but then second time, I had to laugh.
Where did you end up? Cannot see you anymore after passing by the camera.
Good job jerr
gg
Your a god
Glad your okay hope you trained for years to ski/ride Tucks.. not for everyone.
What really makes this clip great is how you can just sit and listen to the constant dribbling of chunks of snow hurtling towards the bottom of the slope. Never sticking, always rolling.... too steep to stop. Really shows how serious this hill is.
Three years later and it still cracks me up. Glad she ended up okay.
"OMG"
"Heads up"
Legend has it she's still sending it
Congrats on breaking the sound barrier?
Are you still alive?
Awesome. Just shows how the chute in tucks is no joke. So steep. Gore Tex is fast on snow.
how is this not massively viral i have no clue! LMAO!!!
how does this video not have 200 million views?
I fell like that back in the early 90's thankfully my ski got stuck in the snow so I stopped way up at the top. The hike up line was great next to me and was dead silent until I waved that I was okay. Then they lost it cheering, my buddy said my crash and face first slide was spectacular, once everyone knew I was uninjured. Funny to see what it must have looked like on video.
“Did you get that on video?”
Mr. Shakey hands missed most of it.
You are now the new intro to a Skrillex song
This needs to be viral.
Bahaha what are the odds you caught a perfect "OMYGOD!" all in a split second..
I bet this is what she was saying the whole way: "OMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGODOMYGOD!!!!!" LOL
00:31 you’ll see her hit the ground on top of the slope where she initiated the slide. She went like a quarter mile downhill!
Good catch, at first i thought it was the snowboarder, who doesn't exactly look like he/she should be there
I climbing up and was just above the guy on the left in similar position when someone lost it near the top of the rock wall and cartwheeled right over me. All my friends watched from above and thought I was dead. The cart wheeler never touched me but I felt the breeze on my neck as he went by. He was shaken but ok.
The comedic timing oh the guy on skis getting out the way of the bull in a China shop, the dude planting his skis by the cliff saying “completely necessary” sarcastically about him getting out of the way not knowing what was coming, & POV guy saying “I don’t know why just did that…”
Then her coming into view as you hear her get close sliding down, then “OOOOOOOHHHH MAAAAARRRHHHHH GGGGAAAAAWAWAWAWAWAAADDDDD!!” Just for bro to say to himself “head up….” After she’s already damn near the boot trail of people rofl
Skier 1: "I dunno why he just did that"
Skier 2: "Yeah, completely unnecessary"
Human projectile: "AHHHH! OH SHIT!"
Haha! We found out why!
This doesn't even look fun...like even if you're good enough to do it. But some of these people are in way over their head. Why would you hike 2 + hours for some bullet proof crust?
Right of passage like some say. Some lines look cool, but you always gotta get past the super steep icy parts.
Because hiking is cheaper than buying a plane ticket to a place with actual snow?
i was there when this happened. saw it from across the bowl. at 0:47 you can see her clip her face on the ski boot of the only hiker that didnt move.
Oh man what did she do wrong ?? Or should she not have been there to begin with?
All it takes is to lose an edge. It could happen to anybody.
@@teleguy5699 I mean yeah in Telluride one afternoon I was doing my last run of the day and doing it on the very steep town side of the resort. Which gets baked in the sun all day but for the last few hours it’s in the shade and just becomes pure ice. Me tired and having the dullest edges on my board at the time should’ve just taken the gondola back down to town, but instead I dropped into Upper Milk run, a Black or double black diamond idk it’s very steep. But with no edges I slid out immediately and since the run was pure ice I couldn’t regain any control so I just slid down the whole run kind of freaking out for a sec. I was sliding down it going pretty fast and since it was hot out I took my gloves off. So as I was sliding down I was trying to grab the Mtn to slow myself down but this didn’t work at all and instead my hands were so ice burned once the whole ordeal was over. I’m just glad that at the bottom of the run it went into a flatter area onto a cat walk. If it had went into some trees or worse, some kind of rocks or cliff band. Then I would’ve been really f&cked 😮 But compared to this girl my mess up doesn’t even compare lol. I snowboard so I never lost my board aka she double ejected from her skis. Also she was hauling some serious ass! She’s so lucky she didn’t go off a cliff or ran into some rocks and or trees 🙄 It’s a sketchy video to watch but not gonna lie if I didn’t find it somewhat funny as well 😅
@@ryanevans4783 Great story. Yes it was funny, especially 10 years later knowing all is well. I think anyone who has skied the steeps can relate to your story. That's why I always would tell my kids to ski 80% of your capacity, because that 20% reserve can save your life. Here in New England we have many of experienced skiers die flying off into the woods. Trees are not forgiving.
@@teleguy5699 No they are not and I’m a very experienced skier & snowboarder so I should’ve knew better that day but not going to lie. I was young in my mid 20s and I def had some alcohol in my system. Which when I’m like ski mountaineering and doing runs like that I would never do them at all under the influence. But on this day I was just riding the resort that I lived at and skied every day. Then again Telluride is the the 2nd steepest resort in Colorado lol 😅
@@ryanevans4783 Youth is wasted on the young, some sage person once said.😂
I bet Black Diamond could use this footage to sell a few of their Whippet poles.
Also glad she's OK.
Any chance that you could give us a play by play review of what happened?
This woman is very lucky. An unfortunate woman slid to her death just last week in Tuckermans, in a different area. Some of these runs have rocks at the bottom and are a no fall kind of place.
Something tells me he knew why he just did that. See the shoulder check at 0:27
Oh my - thank you! I never figured it out until now!
what the hell are those conditions?
Where the hell did he go?
First lesson in skiing, fall backwards, never - forward.❄️
Yeah... I remember the first time I crashed on a slope where your gonna be sliding all the way down. Its not a good feeling! Hope the kid was okay! I did the same thing on a really icy run and scraped the skin off my thighs down to the muscle trying to stop myself.
I'm from CO, so it never rains in winter. One day I was at Kirkwood in Tahoe and was so warm it rained one day and the next day I was skiing on a slope that wasn't even steep, but it was above a cliff down below. My edge slipped and I fell down on my hip, wasn't going at all fast either so I thought "no big deal, just put my edges down and pop back up on my feet" but my edges were just clattering uselessly over the ice and my speed didn't change....after a while I thought holy shit in not gonna stop before this cliff band and I don't know how high it is
as I approached the edge I was sliding toward a rock directly below my feet so I stomped my skis into it to try to stop my momentum, but I just rotated around and ended up sliding head first. Then I saw a good sized boulder in front of me so I decided I would wrap my arms around it in a huge bear hug and hang on for dear life . Funny thing was, the rock wasn't attached to anything, I guess it was just sitting on top of the snow.
So over the edge I went thinking "fuuuuu.... I don't even know how far I'm about to fall 10ft? 15? 20?"
Thankully I landed boot first, facing uphill and then slammed the back of my helmet into the snow.
Just as I was feeling extra thankful for the foot first landing, and glad I wore my helmet, I realized that I was still sliding and not slowing down, I looked to my side and saw the boulder I had tried to grab bouncing down the slope next to me.
The slope was wide open but far down below was forest of trees. I didn't want to play tree pinball but I still wasn't slowing down. As I entered the trees I ended up blocking one tree trunk with my boots and then awkwardly grabbing one small bent over tree with my arms to finally stop
Definitely one of the two scariest moments in my skiing life
@k9joseph seriously?! haha which song?
This is classic. You need to take this down and send it to Americas Funniest Home Videos....!
Lmao! Got to learn how to fall. I've had some bad falls. Nothing to be ashamed of but the timing of the "oh my god" was perfect.
where did she go? just disappears
She hits one of the hikers. Mind you this was shot on a handheld digital camera 10 years ago. Not the best quality but she's there.
Is it me or was she just gone after he swung the camera around?
She hit one of the hikers. Gotta remember- this was 2011 and shot on a Nikon Coolpix. 😂
What month is the video in?
welp now he knows why
I just cant stop laughing at the "OH MY GOD!"
I started getting annoyed with this video by around :30 - :35, thinking that nothing was going to happen. I was about ready to just watch another video. But once I got to :40 I BUSTED OUT LAUGHING! Clicked replay at least a solid 20 times, no joke. Glad you're ok, but this is mad funny!
Probably isn't. But this looks fake as hell. The way the camera is pointed into the ground right before the kid zooms by. And not panning earlier, and when he does there is nothing to see.
It’s OK to think that but you’re wrong.
No effing way is that fake.
You wouldn't even fake it.
btw it's Tuckerman, not Tuckerman's. Epic video.
These people can barely ski, what are they doing in the back country?
That's a long, hard hike up to slide back down.
Who ever has seen Christmas vacation. Clark be like this sledding
What made you slide like that?
Combination of snow and gravity.
That's pure gold. I'm crying I'm laughing so hard.
Pete is spot on: dangerous terrain. But that was pretty funny.
this is why I don't do things.
This is the reason I stopped skiing Tucks on the weekend. If you go there on a weekday its dead, not as much crazy energy but its just much safer. I hope that women was ok.
Scott Gibson broke her collar bone. I hope it healed!
@@dustinobrien47 Thanks for the update, that was one hell off a slide. Take care
I skied Tuckerman's on the same day the men landed on the moon.
July 20, 1969?
@@johnsilva9139 Yup, when I was 24 years old. I've skied well over 1,000 days and gave it up this year at 79. The only things I have to show for all those ski days is a few racing trophies, a trashed knee and a crooked clavicle, but it was worth it.
@steffidfhs oh man! glad you're okay that was gnarly!
omg .. I'm glad he/she was ok .. but THIS WAS SO FUCKING FUNNY.. I DIED Laughing
That's east coast backcountry? It's so crowded lol
Also that is certainly not 55 degrees
The too section definitely looks like 55 degrees depending exactly where you drop in. The average looks like 40-45 like highland bowl at Aspen Highlands
Nothing funny about that. That person was probably hurt, and lucky not worse (I heard they Heli Evacuated somebody with a broken Femur - Very Serious)... Best wishes for them (Her? Hard to tell...) to be OK...
This is not "Be a Rock Star" -terrain, people. You MUST respect it, ski/ride within control, and plan your routes carefully (Note the way both skier & boarder descend - Tricky conditions there with sun vs shade). You should also have means to self-arrest on steep terrain (45-50+degrees).
This video is nuts. Glad @steffidfhs is OK!
"I dont know why he did that" person proceeds to fly face first and would have taken out the skier. It actually was completely necessary
Marty Flipper phenomenal observation.
Never stop and chill in the fall line (of avalanches or jerry's lol)
Flat out awesome!
i watched this at veiw 4 ! yesterday!
HAHAHAHA that Oh my god !!! EPIC
it sure ate me alive but there was alot more dirt and ice than in this video, surely the pricker bushes will be your safest bet when sliding on your back to a barracade of oncoming boulders to the left of the revine when falling down it.
@:30 you can see the beginning of her crash
That was so
Funny he was straight
400 feet away in like 2 seconds too
Seems like half the videos of this place are crash vids, lol
Seams like to be way too many idiots mistake Tuckermans as a bunny slope
Wow.. not everyone should be skiing Tucks.
That didn’t end well
that was the funniest thing i have ever seen
I love living right near here lol
thats funny.. as soon as I heard him yell I thought the same thing. haha
@steffidfhs Aww man, glad that you did fine overall. But I do admit that it was kinda funny when you flew right through screaming OMG.
0:40
@steffidfhs I was making a reference to Cup Stacking Girl vs Skrillex. lol
girls make better sleds i guess
LAUGH MY FUCKING ASS OFF. HAHAHAHAHAHAH
OHHHH MY GAWDDDDD!
I know what I'm doing for Thanksgiving!
CRAZY CARPET FTW!!!
OH MY GODDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@petebanta Tell the Rockstars to stop hucking those cliffs then...
@Raezold Yeah. Hate that too. But like you said, this was seriously laughable!
@iLikeTOMIXX Glad she's okay though. (:
oooooooOOOMMMMMMG-----------(radio silence)
still classic
Might want to be a good before tackling terrain like this. Both the skier and snowboarder had horrible skills. However, I'm all for adults making their own decisions and it makes for funny videos.
She has good enough form to be a skeleton racer!☺️
looks like fun
Oh man thanks for sharing that. FKNA
This is why we carry ice axes when touring in the PNW
Glad she’s ok, an out of control slide like that would be terrifying
@steffidfhs look up some "self arrest techniques" they've saved me a few times from sliding into trees at 40+mph on ice
LOL on the fall
good thing that dude moved hahaha
gaper central
Бывает!!!
0:41🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So much for the peace and tranquility of nature. Looks like a tourist trap for adrenaline junkies. Looks like fun, but, damn, so many people... cannot concentrate on the story the mountain is trying to tell.
Steve Doe what are you talking about? It’s a ski hill during the winter / right of passage for East Coast skiers.
The story the mountain is trying to tell is titled "f around and find out" lol
HOLY SHIT LOL!
I know that chick...
LOL! XD
hahaha holy shit
What a shit show that place is. 😂
A shit show on shit snow 😂
LOLOLOL!!!
LMAO
LOL
a real shitshow
