    This comment way over a home owner capable, I’m dealing with a shower/tub combination. Recently bought home so I have no history on it. Currently there is only a shower head, no spout for bathtub. There’s a existing hole for waterline spout. I’ve been watching your videos since starting on house problems. You are Very helpful, Thank You. Think this may be over my head!

    Hi Shannon, Thanks for the Excellent video. I looked at some other videos, including Moens but yours is so simply explained. Ive always wanted to have His/Hers shower heads for the Wife and I. It took a bit of jiggering around with stringer boards to mount everything perfectly in alignment. It is just a "shower only" unit but im guessing it would of cost me over $500 in labour for the local "Pirate" to do it😂. I split the job with pex and push-in fittings. It went well but time consuming. I always love your videos cuz your a down to earth guy, Thanks Again.
    Jim.

    I definitely appreciate the level of detail you include in your descriptions. As a handyman, I do so many different kinds of projects that I need these extra reminders and notes so crucial steps remain in sequence. Thanks for confirming the importance of anchoring PEX and always switching to copper when pipe needs to breach the wall. I didn't hear you mention gauging plumbing rough-in height with tile size and layout to avoid grout lines falling behind escutcheons, trim plates and tub spouts (when possible), but your finished product demonstrates this preferable aesthetic.
    I currently have yet another project including a tub conversion to shower, and a tub replacement, in tandem with a PEX system upgrade from old CPVC for the cold. This is in a condo w/steel studs, so I'll be cruising through your vids for any tips I don't already know. Already looking to reframe the shower to best accommodate the clients preferred tile. Fun Fun Fun!

    Shannon, Thank you sir for taking the time to do this video. Always appreciate great work and down to the average DIY-er lingo. It really helps to see all the small details that go into making it work correctly. Sometimes you get folks skipping past what they think is common knowledge. Thanks again. NOW, to cutting 1/2 copper, converting top pex, raising the shower/bath spout up ~4-inches, tub, tile and (crossing fingers it all goes as planned.

    I am using a Moen system very similar but unfortunately I have the bath spout that screws on and the length of the copper needs to be just right, which you talked about, ugh. Very good info you provided, thanks! It will help me a lot in gauging the depth of the Moen valve. As you mentioned, the instructions are vague in this area. It's more art than craft at that point. Wish me luck!

    I know those push connect/shark fittings are convenient, but why not use pex crimp rings?
    I know they are more permanent, but I would think they are cheaper and no worries about the slim chance of a connection leak/failure.

    I need to know about threading the shower arm on.
    I counted 3 rotations and you said you couldn't do more, all by hand, no tools.
    I just had to use a 24in pipe wrench and the arm sandwiched between 2 boards to hold it just to get my arm and sharkbite threaded together. (I used 5 wraps and pipe dope) we got them together and only seated about half the threads. I went through dry fittings with 2 different shower arms and multiple 1/2in female threads. All copper or sharkbites while sitting on the floor in a Lowes trying to see what the heck the issue is.
    Initially the arm leaked, after the pipe wrenching madness and 4 or 5 solid turns, no leaks. I cannot understand why that was such a hassle for use while the multiple other threaded fittings were light weight and easy wrenched snuga

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would say you had the threads cross threaded ?

    • @tyrantm7
      @tyrantm7 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HouseImprovements by all means yes, the original fitting was crossed after we removed it. The crazy thing is, the shower arm was just fine, when tested in other fittings we had the same result, just didn't tighten it fully. Our problem has been an issue with a few others too by checking a couple forum posts here and there. In the end, we got a new shower arm, a new fitting, plenty of dope and tape, a hefty amount of applied force, now no leaks. I even asked opinions of the employees with the dry fits in store before I took them home.

    Great very well explained video your example is pretty much exactly as mine situation is, however I am little confused I was most interested on placement of the valve depth wise from the tiled surface , you said in the beginning that the black cover plate should end up flush with the finished tile however when you showed the final fitting of the sleeves and escutcheon plate etc it looked like that black cover was set back behind the backing board can you please confirm this positioning I have watched several of your videos and you have a great teaching ability

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The faucet appears that way but the plastic plate is removed because the wall covering is thick enough that the plate is not needed for support. It just looks further back then it is I guess? If you had a fiberglass or acrylic shower wall only then you need that black plate in place just behind the shower wall to help support the wall because its thin.

    I think I'm going to go with PEX tubing like you did.
    Curious about the push-in connectors though, especially the one for the tub spout, what is preventing the pipe from falling out of the connection ? I was waiting for you to clamp them on but it never came 😅 any clarification would be amazing, thank you!

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for this!
    I have to redo 3 bathrooms & the only plumber who will come out to my house is very rude and he refuses to sweat copper. I'm not comfortable with sweating copper, so I wanted to see how to connect copper pipe for the tub spout. I can re-use existing copper rough-in for the two tubs. I didn't realize push-fit worked on copper for some reason.
    I'm going to be cheap & use sch 80 PVC elbows (used for electrical conduit) for the 90° bends for the water supply to connect to the valve bodies. It's less than $1 for the elbows where I live and it will be less likely to restrict the flow.
    I'm going to be using thin-walled direct-to-stud wall kits so I'm wondering if I can use water-sealed plywood to reinforce the spots where holes are cut so that if they ever get pressed on/leaned on, it won't crack the surround. I know Sterling/Kohler uses plywood or OSB coated in some protective water seal for their "age-in-place backers". I'm going to be making my own for the grab bars since Sterling didn't have them in the right place for the grab bar sizes we are using. I'll also be adding braces in the wall spanning the studs that the backer boards can anchor to.
    Btw, do you have the link to your video on installing that valve in a thin-walled shower? I would very much appreciate it, please.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure what "metal" you are referring to . There should be a plastic disk ( about 5" around) attached to the valve, that should be flush to the tile. In reality you usually can be 1/8" deeper or prouder and it will still work.

    Question: so I just had a bathroom remodeled. It had no shower head plumbing and I believe mostly galvanized pipe. Anyways, the guy I hired used all pex. Before paying him, I turned the tube on and my shower head would leak. Further research, it's because he used pex from the diverter to the tub spout. Anyways, I needed him to fix but obviously he wasn't going to cut the new tile. So he had access to the back of the shower portion. He ended up changing the tub spout that he had pex to copper, to 1/2 galvanized pipe. He fixed the issue which was great. But, obviously I wish it wasn't galvanized. Anyways is this a big issue for me or should I be okay for many years before it starts to break down since water isn't really sitting and pooling as much in the down spout?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      galvanized is not ideal anymore but you will get many years from that .

  • @eduardopakinganjr1458
    @eduardopakinganjr1458 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is the pex for the down spout really a bad idea? Or just not recommended

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The smaller inside diameter of pex compared to copper can cause water to back up and actually trickle out of the shower head.

    Hi Shannon. I assume to change water from the bath to the shower, all you need is press thr diverter on the spout? What is the difference of having a diverter in the mixer? Thanks

      Really no difference , they both do the same thing.
