I wish I would have known that kids can be difficult or mean, and parents don't want to see it. Sometimes parents just can't admit that their kid can be ill-behaved. So I just have to deal with this poorly behaved child without really having the right to raise them
Oh this speaks VOLUME!!! SO ACCURATE
I think part of that is people farrrrrrrr too often think they are being honest with people and the other person got it, when in reality they have so significantly and widely beat around the bush that the other party ends up with no idea that there is even an issue :(
There is a way to be kind , blunt and honest but the majority of people struggle to achieve it.
This is honestly why I cannot be dealing with other people's kids. If they're not family, I can't do it. Because what might have been acceptable or unacceptable in my household may be totally different for someone else. And a lot of parents don't discipline their kids. So it can be frustrating when you're the one who is stuck dealing with that type of behavior and there's nothing you can do about it.
I'm nervous about knowing how comfortable to be around the family and when I'm "stepping over boundaries" like helping myself to food in their fridge
Room and board means you are entitled to help yourself and have some food and a place to stay, that's why au pairs get pocket money and not paid wages according to the hours you are actually working
I was au-pair in Denmark for couple of years. The first family wasn't bad, but wasn't good either. Small kids and brats if I may say, they were really using my lack of danish knowledge against me. Luckily, after two months, mother decided to stay home with kids, so I had to find a new family and thank God for that! I stayed with the new family for 4 years, they adjusted my schedule so I could do my masters degree 'on the side', besides the language school the kids helped me a lot to learn danish and they just became my danish family. Three years after graduating, getting a job and moving away from them, we're still very close and I still consider them my family ❤️ I guess I was very lucky after all

Who sends you to the language school and graduate school? Do your host family sponsor your schooling?

yes, they mostly provide you an apartment

I wish I would have known how strange it can be to live with the people you work for. Especially since the parents have power over you in multiple ways. They're the ones who give you a roof over your head, food to eat and a salary. It can be difficult to be yourself or feel completely comfortable in that situation
Do you get privacy when you’re not looking after the kids? For example, can you lock the door to your room? Do you get your own toilet? Do you always have to ask/tell where you are going?
I wish I would have known how even tho this is suppose to be a “cultural exchange” most of the time it’s far from that .. not being appreciated and being excluded a lot of the time really makes a person feel broken 🤷🏽♂️

2020 au pair here, I worked throughout covid in Germany and I hated being so far from home during this horrible time but when I tell you I am so grown up and mature (well maybe). It has changed me for the better and I wouldn’t ask for another way to spend the last couple of years! Goodluck new au pairs ❤

I’m currently an Aupair in Austria, I’m from Perth, Western Australia. I have been in Austria for a little over six months now. The agreement I had with my family that I was getting paid €400 per month which is pretty good considering he average is around €300. I look after four children and boy it is rough sometimes, a lot of bumps and hurdles along the way. However, the most rewarding and greatest experience where you truly do grow within yourself and building so much independence is great. But I work really closely with the mother as she is a stay at home mum. I completely agree about you feel like you put more work into sometimes than what you’re paid... but in saying that, within the year you’re allocated 6 weeks of paid leave which is great!

I'm an AuPair right now in Germany and I've changed families once already after 4 months at one family. It's super important to be honest about being unhappy there, although I know it is so difficult. It's also important to note that you are NOT a servant and should not be treated like one (cooking all meals then cleaning the kitchen alone, serving guests, etc.) and if your family never invites you on family outings, that's not okay either. Anyways, in Germany you're paid 260 Euros per month, plus 50 Euros per month if you're taking a language course. If you live in a city like Berlin, knowing German isn't necessary. However, most other "big cities" are not like Berlin. Therefore, try to learn the language!

I’m thinking about being an au pair in France next year to improve my French before college but I don’t have much experience with kids so I’m worried about looking after them properly and disciplining them correctly
I am really curious about how to get a study visa from an au pair visa??? And what to remember like the college admission process or dates to remember, requirements and stuff like that?
I'm going through a tricky au pair experience atm.. I've been with a family in germany for 5 weeks, the first few days were awful and I wanted to leave immediately but knew I needed to give it a chance and make the best of it - the parent was so unwelcoming to me, barely spoke to me on the journey from the airport, didn't show me around the house, where the kitchen or bathroom were, didn't explain anything to me about the routine or kids until i asked. The kids are sweet, sometimes ofc difficult but generally I enjoy being with them. The parent and I are not friendly however. I try to chat with him, but he is always blunt and seems like he doesn't want to have to talk to me. This makes it difficult for me to approach him with my problems. I also am working way overtime - when the kids are home the parent expects me to be present every minute (they live half the time at this house and half at their other parent's house). When the kids are here for the whole weekend, the dad is reluctant to let me take 30 minutes to go running... and sometimes when i do he texts me to tell me off for not taking the dog with me (but i cant run with the dog as it doesnt follow). The parent doesn't communicate with me when schedules change and the kids are coming home which means I have to change my plans for the day to be instantly ready to babysit. I feel like I am being taken advantage of. I've been here just 5 weeks now and havent been paid yet - I know it is up to me to make sure i get it of course. I had been looking for a good moment to ask this week and it got away from me... but now i also have decided to leave the family as I am not happy. I need to ask for my pay and tell them I am leaving and am a bit nervous. What do you think?

I was a nanny in New York for a Pakistani woman that has one 8 years old boy and a 6 years old girl. They were so mean to me all the time. As I read in the comments, you depend on the family for everything. The deal was having 3 meals a day, 8 hours sleep and Sundays off. The payment 800 dollars a month that raises after 3 months up to 1000 dollars a month. But everything was just a lie. When I got there, I didn't have 3 meals a day. I barely had 1 meal and it was the leftovers of the family. The mother allowed me to sleep 4 or 5 hours a day. I didn't have any days off in 3 weeks. She paid me me only 2 weeks, she still owes me money after almost a year. Of course I ran away from the family in the middle of December in a Sunday snowy day in the morning in a bare feet with my shoes in my hand and ready to call 911 because she was threatened me. I ran out, I ran for about 3 blocks, she ran after me begging me not to leave the job. I decided to go back to the house just to pick up my 2 suitcases that still were in her house. It was like an horror movie. And of course when we video call before I moved to work with her everything was just honey and love. But they were just pretending to convince me to work with them. I used to work as a teacher at home after school, for 3 or 4 hours, to help kids to do their homework and other chores. I'm very scared now to work as a nanny again after this American horror story as a nanny with this family in New York.

I'm headed to Spain to work as an au pair for a family that seems really wonderful. So far they've shown great communication and they have had good experiences with au pairs in the past. I have some experience with childcare in the past... I've worked as a babysitter and as a camp counselor. One thing I want advice on navigating is $$! I want to ask if the family will help me cover my return flight, but don't want to overstep my bounds.

Talking over contracts and expectations w a potential host family in the suburbs of Paris right now..! And starting to get these feelings of anxiety, especially with how finances are going to work. What are generally some of the nonnegotiable things au pairs should expect their host family to provide, especially "extras" like transport passes, phone plans and language classes?
I've been an au pair for around half a year. I was lucky because I had a boyfriend in the same town as well as savings and people who could help me to go back to my country. I was doing all my best, but without any appreciation it is difficult to live with unknown people who only tell you that you are doing everything wrong

I’ve been an au pair in China for almost two months. I’ve already switched families once because the first one treated me so poorly. I’m considering leaving early because I’m realizing I just don’t dont like the job and also there’s a lot of stuff going on back in my real family that makes it extremely difficult to want to work or feel content. I want to leave so badly but it’ll cost a lot to end the program early and I don’t know if it would be a good idea to just try to work it out. I’m truly at a loss of what to do

Agency, they make parents respect the law ;) to find a decent family on your own it's a needle in a haystack...
How does having prior teaching experience and teaching experience abroad affect the au pair experience in your opinion? I’m interested in doing this to get more experience living abroad? I speak French at a proficient/conversational level, but I never really looked into this option until I came across your channel!

just speaking since i lived in paris - im sure you'll love it. You have to get used to cultural differences and (generally) as a foreigner the french tend to be a little closed off (almost defensive and protecting their own culture, which i understand) and like any place you go to, they can either be rude or super nice. But I think its something you have to figure out and get used to yourself. Anyway like I said at the start, I'm sure you'll love it! Paris has some lovely parts and I miss it deeply :,)

I wish I thought more about the fact that the children will most likely not like AND respect you from the first week on and that the first time can be really hard because of that. The children do have cope with the change too and it will take time until the kids really accept you and want to spend time with you.
I am a stay at home mom but have physical disabilities. My kids are 4,7,8,10,11. My husband works full time.

I think honestly that thought goes through every single au pairs mind. and I've never heard it happening! especially if you go through the whole process of Skyping multiple times, seeing the kids, singing a contract - its a lot of effort on their part! I realise now that it was a silly fear! don't worry you are not alone

It's really hard starting from scratch to learn a language you've never spoke but you'll get used eventually I've managed to speak good Arabic after being an aupair for 1yr+4months but I'd wish to go to Germany,France next year after my contract wish me luck!!

I'm going to be an au pair in France (I'm from Mexico), I've been contacted by two families but I haven't done the interviews (winter break I guess) and I'm so nervous! I don't know what to expect, how to behave or what to ask them during the Skype interview, my French is basic, my English is not that bad but I can't say I'm fluent and I don't know if I will be able to improve my French in one year as an au pair. D:
How did you apply for au pair?
Once your in the environment you'll probably start to learn the language way faster than if your learning from your home country
@@maddfrost Oh hi! I've been an au pair almost for a year now, I'm going to renew my visa for a second year in March. It has been a roller-coaster honestly, at the end of January (2020) I was contacted by a single mother near Paris, I got my visa one month after the interview and came to France the first week of March but things didn't go well with the mother the first week and I got stuck with her during the lockdown, after that I decided to do a rematch (I came with an agency, not the best idea) but they found a new family for me to start working with until September so I had to find a summer family by myself, I ended up spending the summer in Bretagne with a really nice family but horrible kids, now I'm living in Paris with the family that my agency found for me, I have my own studio (not a chambre de bonne), the parents are super nice with me but the kids are uncontrollable, I think it's cultural hahaha.
First family, we spoke just in English, the mother bullied me because my English wasn't perfect for her.
Second family, I spoke in English with the father and French with the mother and the kids, even though my French was (and is) super basic she encouraged me to speak with her and helped me out.
Third family, I speak Spanish with the parents and French with the kids, my French is still basic because honestly I haven't been able to go to classes etc but I can comunicate with the kids, I try to listen to some phrases the parents told them and repeat it to them.
So far it hasn't been the experience I was expecting, I had high expectations but I'm trying my best not to give up.
Don't go with the first family, try to find the best option for you and don't let the kids control you.

Weird question, would a host family ever let me bring my cat with me? I don’t know what I would do with him otherwise. I don’t even know how easy it would be to bring a cat to the Europe in general but I would absolutely love to be an au pair
I'm being paid $120 a week as an au pair in France - so either $480 or $600 a month depending how many Fridays in the month (paid every Friday). This is quite a bit more than the average but I'm doing more errands/housework which is why!
@@maddfrost Depends how much housework/cooking/extra duties they are asking you to take on I suppose! This is what aupairworld says if you are in France, "According to the French regulations au pairs from a non UE country are entitled to at least 320 € pocket money per month and EU au pairs receive monthly pocket money between 271.50 € and 325.80 €. The amount that is agreed must be specified in the au pair contract." Most of the au pairs I know earn on average 80 euros a week. Mine is definitely way above the usual!
I am hoping to go to France as an au pair at the end of next year, and something that I am really nervous about is that I will not fit in with the family (feel excluded) as I am a social person. I am also really afraid that I won't make any friends my age from where I am, and I don't want to be lonely while I'm there

You should sign in an agency (but pls inform yourself about the agency first) it is way more safe than just looking through the internet. Most agency's visit the family's home before letting them have an aupair. And you should also Skype with the family and maybe talk to other aupairs if they had some.
Hi I have a question that I can't seem to get an answer for. So I'm 31 years old living in the USA as a nanny. I have a extensive amount of experience caring for children: babysitting, preschool teacher and for the past 7 years i have been a nanny. I love to travel so naturally becoming an au pair sounds like a dream however, I am hearing some things about how you can only get a work visa if you are 30. Is there a way around this work visa or simply another option for older people?

@@maddfrost well, at first it’s for sure going to be a challenge, but then again, being so immersed in the country, hearing the parents talk in French and the kids as well, you’ll pick up the basics quick enough then in your French lessons it will only go better! Still an au pair right now on my second year! My French is close to level C1.

Hello guys, I'm new to the au pair community and I'm just considering being an au pair, and haven't done the steps i need to do yet to be an au pair. So I just wanna ask, how do you deal with kids when they're mean and rude and disrespectful? how do you discipline them if they dont even listen to you?
and if I quit, would my visa remain active?
When kids are assholes you have to remember that they are kids and they probably think they're being funny, or don't have a full understanding of empathy. Therefore, you have to be the one with empathy in that situation and take a step back. It always sucks when kids say mean things, especially the older ones, and you have to act like it didn't hurt. Discipline, however, is something you have to talk to the parents about. This won't be just one conversation, you have to ask as things happen how you should handle it. Feigning sadness or yelling at them doesn't do anything besides push them away. But, you also don't have to take their crap. If the parents don't discipline the kids, there are things like privileges or toys that you can take away.
With the visa thing, it really depends on where you're planning on going. In Germany, your visa lists the address of your family and it's only valid as long as you're working for them. However, you have time to change families and stuff, and they won't like throw you out of the country. It would just be basically impossible to find work that isn't under the table, plus a place to live.

As a male, I’m hoping to have my own studio and right now i have an amazing job so I’m going to try to save up at least 5k to keep me independent. Do you think that amount will be enough for me to pick up and move my life completely to Paris? I’m also taking to a family in the south of France near Geneva Switzerland, but I’m not sure if it’ll be a good fit for me. I don’t want to feel too isolated. Any advice guys? :)
Depending on how close to Geneva you're looking, there's a lot of au pairs! If you want a big city though, make sure to talk about the city with the family because there are a lot of small towns here too

I'd rephrase it by stating the skills you got during that time. Like work ethics, working well with others, language skills, etc.
The most thing I'm most scared of is to be part of a family again. I am already 26 (went to uni first) and I just don't know if I can go back on not being independent.
Totally get you! But remember that there are age limits to being an au pair in certain countries!

Where will you AuPair at? Loneliness is a pretty common feeling, but AuPair facebook groups really help! Depending on the age of your kids, you may go to like baby/toddler meet ups at churches or family centers. Often, there are volunteers working there for a gap year around our age. Try to talk to them or ask if anyone there knows of university parties happening in the area. Being super honest and outgoing with the parents is also important but super exhausting so just do your best

Just a head up! Au pairing is a program that lasts at least a year if you need a visa to travel to the country your intending to visit! Haven't seen many other au pairs talk about this and I'm aware every family has different expectations but in general, what skills should an au pair have to look after themselves/the kids? Are most au pairs required to cook, clean, tidy up the house for their host families? How much should au pairs be paid weekly or monthly in a reasonable manner?
No, Au-Pairs are entitled to light house shores. The host family need to hire someone to clean the house but it's not part of Au-Pairs functions. Generally speaking, You work for the children

I guess it depends on who the parents are, but parenting styles have for sure changed a bit

I used AuPairworld.com. It’s an awesome website and I just put up some good pictures of me and me with my family and stuff. And then wrote a few paragraphs in my personal info section and then reached out to a couple of families.
Also honestly not too worried about the coronavirus in Italy right now, unless some crazy amount of people get infected and die, it’s not gonna be a problem...hopefully😂

I really want to become one and I have been talking to a few host families but I have seen some bad stories about sex trafficking and stuff, I know I can contact previous au pairs but what if they are new to hosting because a few of them have told me they are new and I really want to be safe!

This is my first time watching your videos and I just want to say that it was really helpful! I'm planning to be an au pair for 10-12months starting next year in summer. I'm from Germany and I'm currently talking to a host family from Canada (my top choice country). I've only talked to them for a few days and skyped with the host mum once for an hour and she asked me if I wanted to be their au pair today. I really like her and the job description and salary (3kids aged 6-10, 999CAD per month) seem fair/good to me but I'm afraid of making the decision too fast.. Any advice or red Flags to Look Out for?
Sarah Laetitia maybe Skype with the kids as well? Or ask the mom about their hobby’s and household rules to see whether this is (at least somewhat) in line with your views since you’re going to be spending a lot of time raising them in the way the parents want you to. And it helps if you have a connection with your kids from the beginning :)
Linda Leijten Thank you for replying! I did actually Skype with the mom and two of the three kids again yesterday. My own mom was there as well and "approved" of the family and we've scheduled more calls for me to get to know the host dad and the last kid. They're super nice this far but not in a perfect way so they seem to be very honest with me. I am strongly considering going there, the only problem left would be getting the visa 😅😊
