    I was 5 in south-eastern Norway. Some rainy days that summer, when the wind was in the wrong direction, my mother wouldn't let me play outside. This was overkill, but who really knew at that point?
    We still routinely check the milk and meat of grazing animals (reindeer, sheep, to a lesser extent cows) in certain areas for radiation. And some types of game meat as well. At the time and throughout the rest of the 80s the reindeer industry (and hence the Sami people dependent on that) was the most heavily affected, because apparently the lichen on which reindeer feed is especially adept at absorbing radiation. Tonnes of reindeer and sheep meat had to be dumped, like in many other countries.
    In my opinion, the worst downstream effect of Chernobyl may yet be that the accident (understandably) made people so terrified of nuclear plants that we, as a global society, became unable to fully use one of the only realistic, scaleable alternatives to fossil fuels while doing so would have been fcomparatively* easy/low-cost. That is leading to and will lead to worse human (and animal) suffering down the line.
    All forms of scaleable energy production come with major downsides. All of them. You pays your money and you takes your choice...

      @@CrocodilePile I see but I wanted to say that very few western people understand the hidden information and contents of the series, those without an obvious meaning. The phrase "I know a lot about concrete" makes it clear that Scherbina may have originally been a manual worker who rose high on the social "ladder" in the communist regime. That's why he understood the language of miners and ordinary plant workers ... We, who were born and partly lived in ex-communist eastern European countries, understand these contents, "messages" very quickly, but very few Americans, Australians etc. can do this. :) You are one of the exceptions.:) Nice.:)

    Absolutely loving your Chernobyl reaction series-, been with you guys since Good Omens but never commented before. Chernobyl is such a brilliant series, and unwinds beautifully filling in the details. After watching it I read ‘Chernobyl History of a Tragedy’ by Serhii Plokhy, I would really recommend- answers so many questions and helps putting it in context of the Soviet machine- with the fight between Moscow and the Ukraine as a satellite state. Chernobyl is seen as a major cause of the independence movements and eventual fall of the Union

      I had a good friend from the Ukraine - haven't seen him in years and he was slightly nuts - but we used to talk about the different perspectives of each other that we grew up with. It was very Rocky IV for both of us. He was in Kiev when Chernobyl went down and credited it with making him want to become a doctor. So yeah, he was nuts - probably still is, but the good news is he's also a surgeon.

    16:08 The death toll is practically almost impossible to calculate, bc the consequences of the disaster just keeps on going even today.
    There are direct deaths caused by it (radiation poisoning, cancer, the explosion...) and there's the deaths of the next generation (deformities, cancer, tumours, environmental changes...)
    It's horrifying

    • @CrocodilePile
      @CrocodilePile  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would take a comprehensive look at populations and mortality rates from all over Europe to figure it out. And you'd still only have an estimate.

    • @CrimsonVipera
      @CrimsonVipera 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. Some scientists argue that the increased rates of cancer in the last 34 years throughout Europe and Asia can be traced to Charnobyl. We won't know-how the actual death toll from this for a long time still. I had the luck of already being almost 3mnths old when this happened (I'm Polish) but a lot of my friends were still in the womb or being conceived. (That's another thing no one checked, now that I think about it, to my knowledge anyway: the rate of miscarages that happened that year. I'm willing to bet it was much higher than normal.) Until my generation dies out, you can't really stop counting. Probably even longer.
      Oh, btw, same radioactive dust went as far as USA, so you got affected too.

  • @panzerwolf494

    The helicopter crash, it actually happened a few months later in reality. Scientists speculate that the pilot was suffering from fatigue and disorientation due to radiation sickness and drifted into one of the cranes near the reactor. These pilots flew dozens of passes over the reactor using lead plates under their seats. At first they were loading the boron and sand inside the helicopters and would have to hover over the reactor for a period of time while another man pushed the stuff out the door. Eventually someone thought up slinging the loads in parachutes under the helicopter and would just have to release a few ropes to drop the load.
    If you want lots of info on this event, I recommend The Truth About Chernobyl by Gregori Medvedev. He was one of the leading scientists involved and does a great job at explaining complex stuff in simple enough terms. He even does a quick rundown of Three Mile Island to give a comparison to how the West handles things differently.

    "Russian protocol includes just vodka" is a surprisingly precise guess. Early protocols for radiation sickness treatment in SU indeed included vodka. In fact I read somewhere that it actually can compensate some effects of radiation exposure(although just slightly).

    The 4 megaton explosion wasn't correct. It is one of the mistakes in the show. If the core lava hit the water it would create a thermal explosion, but not a nuclear one. The explosion would blow up the core again, and spread more of the core material out of the building, but it wouldn't make all of Ukraine uninhabitable. Basically the secondary explosion would have been equivalent to the first explosion, so horrible but comparatively horrible to what already happened.

    • @lunagal
      @lunagal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But it would have blown up the three other reactors too, and those explosions plus #4 going again would probably 4x as bad. 15000 roentgen x4= a lot. I’m no expert. Lol

    How did Gorbachev get power?
    Gorbachev same as any other leader in communist regime that time came to power thru party election pretty much similar to US parties primaries.
    You are a party member who start from the bottom from local communist party branch, work hard (lying, speak BS and all that regular political BS stories) make conections to go step by step, level by level, higher and higher in the party structure and every 4 or 5 years party has a congress and if you have enough conections some group of members will suggest you as a candidate. Could be just you or could be more candidates. Than members of the party vote during the congress and that's it.
    And because it is just one party in communism, who wins he is the president or better say general secretary of the communist party.
