    The fact that the general went himself to measure it and wouldn't let anyone else go speaks volumes about the man

    • @Rybo-Senpai
      @Rybo-Senpai 3 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      It's more a case of an officer looking after his men, he can't bring himself to give an order that could mean certain death outside of combat given the information at hand, whilst simultaneously leading by example, that he is willing to go into the unknown to take a simple measurement shows the men beneath him that he is willing to do what they must now do and that if needed, he will do so again and again, I've read accounts of officers who have lived the rest of their lives carrying the weight of the men they lost, leaving them somewhat depressed and bitter in later life, long after the events that took the lives of their boys.
      This stems from Sun Tzu's
      "Regard your soldiers as your children, And they will follow you into the deepest battles, Look upon them as your own beloved sons, And they will stand by you, even until death"
      If the men feel as if you do not care for them, they may turn upon you as exemplified by the actions of Easy Company's 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne , NCO's just before the Invasion of Europe in that they informed their Regimental Commander about their unwillingness to Serve under Cpt Herbert Sobel due to his vindictive and uncaring nature, what amounted to an act of Mutiny and carried with it penalty of Death by firing Squad as depicted somewhat inaccurately in Band of Brothers, certain elements were omitted to give a generalisation regarding the incident.

      The reactor hall itself supposedly had 30k. In the time it would take you to realize how colossally screwed you are if you were to go there, the radiation you'd absorb would already be enough to kill you hundreds of times over, and likely thousands by the time you escape the worst of the affected areas.

      Radiation decreases exponentially as distance increases, so if the dosimeter was getting 15,000 from (I'm guessing here) 10 - 20m... yeah the real number at the core would be in the 40,000 - 50,000 range, easy.

      It decreases proportionally to the distance to the source squared. That is not exponential change.

    At least according to Legasov's tapes, he was with Pikalov when they went to measure the radiation. They used an APC instead of a truck to be maximally protected from the radiation.

    • @Debbiebabe69
      @Debbiebabe69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      So they must have had some idea they were expecting to come face to face with a bit more than 3.6 roentgen.........

    • @psevdhome
      @psevdhome 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      @@Debbiebabe69 Yeah the first two episodes are built like a detective story for drama and to explain to the audience the basic concepts. But in reality they knew that it had exploded and that the core was exposed. They used helicopters to measure the isotopes to determine what kind of reactions were going on. I think they needed a precise measurement of the radiation level for some reason and used a radiation shielded armoured vehicle for this.
      The tapes are an interesting read, if you are curious. Although technical and methodical at times they really give a view to the kind of man Legasov was, a professional who wanted to understand the accident and make sure it would not happen again.

    • @bencejuhasz6459
      @bencejuhasz6459 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The showrunners probably couldn't get their hands on a running BRDM-2, which is not an APC, but an armoured reconnaisance and patrol vehicle.

    • @psevdhome
      @psevdhome 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bencejuhasz6459 Good point. I assumed a BRDM-2 is an APC. Also I did not mean to disparage the show, I thought it was an interesting detail, that they used a heavier vehicle that has some radiation protection built in. Sometimes the change is justifiable for the drama, and there is no requirement to be 100% accurate.

    • @bencejuhasz6459
      @bencejuhasz6459 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@psevdhome Usually,you find BRDM-2s in one of these three:
      No 1:Still in military service/reserve.
      No 2:Museum/private collections.
      No 3:Property of an organization/company/private owner.
      The last one is the rarest, because of No 1.
      Also,if you ever seen a BRDM-2 up close and personal, all buttoned up,you are going to notice that it is quite hard to look out. They have better visibility from inside than a tank,but still pretty bad compared to a truck. This is probably the other reason why they chose to use a truck instead of the patrol vehicle.The driver can actually see outside what's going on, since this was a TV set for a show, not just empty roads.
