    Very helpful information, thanks! I envy your collection, but not the task you have of moving them into the greenhouse! I don't know about my cacti, but I am definitely not ready for winter. I just moved 2 weeks ago and I'm still trying to find places to put all the plants. You just don't realize how many you have until you move! The cacti and agaves have all wintered outside before and it looks like I can fit almost all of them in a sheltered area so they should be OK. But I need to go through and review all my other succulents - which are "soft" and which are "hard" - to see if I need to bring some of them inside.
    Thanks for the reminders on wintering our cacti!

    I guess there is no need for our cactuses to go dormant here in the Philippines because we have no winter hehe. It is always sunny 🌞 throughout the year. Yeah you are right Anna the counterpart we have for winter is probably the rain 🌧️. It is always raining here in the Philippines even summertime.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, tama ka rin. Salamat. Pero it is still good to let them slow down their growth between December through February diyan sa Philippines. Water less and let them experience the cold nights. This will help them flower more in the summer time. 🙂

      If I winter my San Pedro indoors with close to regular indoor temps, will it be good to grow next spring. I live in a small house and we keep 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the cactus I take care of is native here in NM but the San Pedro is not. It gets down to -20 F here some winters and I lost 10 San Pedro plants two years back, will they be ok if I winter them at 75 F? Thank goodness for Ana and Lyn, you two ladies are so vibrant and wonderful, thank you both for helping us all winter our cactus. This question is a two birds with one stone question.

    Very good tips Ana! I always worry about my cactus in winter as I push the boundaries on both cold hardiness and winter moisture. It can get in the 30s F in my area and while we dont get much rain, it all comes during the coldest time of year when my cactus are mostly dormant. I do try to keep my potted cactus out of the rain but for my cactus planted in the ground all I can do is make sure the soil is well draining. I hope I don't loose any to rot this winter! But this has been part of the process of learning what does well in my specific climate.

    Good information! In MN its already been snowing. I can see how my opuntias get ready for winter, they even lay flat, but ones like echinocereus are a little more nerve-racking. The outdoor opuntias are left to the elements and my other outdoor cactus are cover with little clear bins. I might drape burlap over them. I brought in my other cactus a few weeks ago.

    I just moved to a new apartment that's pretty warm in every room in the winter, so I don't have a good indoor over-winter option. I am thinking I'll move some of the more established cacti out onto the balcony over winter so that they can go dormant. The balcony is sheltered from rain, and winters here (Vancouver) only really get to a low of 0c at night. Hopefully I don't get any losses to root rot!

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good luck! Just make sure to keep them dry if they stay outside. 🙂

  • @nikoryvidal

    I'd love your feedback! Because I'm in the northern Midwest, I have my plants under a grow light. Should I be having my cacti under them too? And for how long? 12 hour/10 hour/8 hour days? Less?

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you get freezing temperatures in the winter. It is best to move your cacti indoors or in a sheltered place. The length your growlights is turned on depends on how cold your sheltered position is. The colder it is, the less length of time the light is needed. But if your sheltered position is warm, your cactus will not go completely dormant and you may have to mimic the sunrise sunset time outside. For cactus, it is best to encourage them to go completely dormant.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on how cold it gets in your house. If it is warm, they may just slow down in growth but don’t go completely dormant. You may water a little if they are shriveling too much.

    We bought the Neem oil from Lowes. For cactus, do we have to dilute it or just spray it on full strength?
    And then..we let the Neem oil stay on the cactus all winter?
    Do We have to reapply? If so, how often? Do we have to rinse off if we decide to water? Thanks a ton!
    Sorry for all the questions!

    When are cacti old enough for a winter nap? I have some young plants grown from seeds in the spring, something I have not previously done . They are from below 10 mm to 30 mm or so, and they seem to grow more now than in the summer. I was thinking that they probably need to be watered until they are more than a year old. I have my cacti indoor.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve only overwintered my seedlings once they are at least 2 years old. But those that grow very slow and are still tiny even at 2 years, I keep them indoors still. Fast growers like Trichocereus and other columnars that are big even as seedlings can usually handle cold temperatures. If they can handle not being watered for weeks or a month, then they might be mature enough to be overwintered.

    My indoor cactus were tipped over by my dog and now they are bending in the middle and look like they are dying. However since it is winter maybe that’s why they look like that. What should I look for to ensure they don’t die on me. I have a bad record with plants and want to do what I can not to have yet another plant die on me

    • @CactusCaffeine

      Many of my small cacti goes inside my greenhouse. But the hardier ones and the big ones stay outside. The ones in the greenhouse will selectively get a very little sip of water around January (only those that are extremely shriveled). I made a video last year about watering cactus during winter. What should I do if several of my cactus and succulents need repotted now? I'm learning that my soil I have them in is not good. It's straight Miracle Gro succulent soil. And it's become badly hydrophobic and very heavy. I can see signs of stress in my plants because of it.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on your climate. If your winter is mild, you can repot but do not water. If you have very cold winters and your plant is already dormant, it is best to wait until next spring. But of course, if your plant is deteriorating fast and emergency repotting is necessary, then do so but keep your plant protected or indoors over the winter. 🙂
