  • We did it! Our first long haul flight with a toddler. We flew 10.5 hours with a toddler, who didn't get a seat as she is under 2, and we survived!
    This week we are sharing our trip from Auckland to Singapore with you all, and it feels so good to be posting this video from a new country. If you have any questions about what it was like to fly long haul in 2022 with an infant, leave us a comment below!
    We used Grab to book a ride from the airport into the city - it was super fast and easy and we would highly recommend. They offer food services as well, but you can check them out and learn more here: www.grab.com/sg/
    We also downloaded an e-sim with Nomad. This meant that we were instantly connected when we landed, and could use our phone as normal without worrying about roaming fees or trying to find wifi. You can check them out here: www.getnomad.app/

    Did she sleep comfortably in the bassinet, as her legs must’ve been bent? I’m flying with my 13 month old in air China, not sure whether to get a bassinet seat or not

    My toddler won't fit in that bassinet like your kid! He's 14 months and will be a lap child. Any tips?

    • @goodforgaia
      @goodforgaia  ปีที่แล้ว

      She was 22 or 23 months here so you’d be surprised how big they can fit it! She had so much more space to sit and move in the bassinet, it was basically used like a seat for her. We have another video on flying tips that might be helpful though? Reusable stickers to play with on the window were great, water colouring books, lots of snacks, and just reminding yourself that it’s worth it to get to your destination 😊

      We took our own stroller if that’s what you mean? We have a mountain buggy nano and have taken it on 10 flights in the overhead locker (we don’t gate check it!). Hope that helps?

    This was a helpful video as we're about to fly from Italy to Sydney with a 18 month old and a 3 year old 😬
    Our youngest will be in our laps without a seat. I assumed he won't be able to use the bassinet as he'll be too long to lay down in it and I think over the max weight limit. It looks like they allowed Gaia to use the bassinet sitting up for your flight? Did the cabin crew ask about her weight? It would be so great if we are allowed to do similarly. Thanks

    • @goodforgaia
      @goodforgaia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Holly! Gaia was 22 or 23 months (so JUST under two), but no one asked for her weight at all. It was basically like a playpen/lazy boy for her and it gave her her own space which I do think helped massively. It also meant we had more space for meals and our bags and overall I think it definitely just made the flight a lot more comfortable! What airline are you flying with?

    • @hollyhodgson7253
      @hollyhodgson7253 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@goodforgaia wow ok this is so interesting! We're flying with Emirates and I think they're pretty strict with things. I'm so glad I saw your video, i wasnt going to ask for a bassinet as i assumed we couldnt use it but I'll definitely ask and see what they say. My boy's only 18 months but he's heavier and taller than average. Fingers crossed!

      @@hollyhodgson7253hey Holly! Have you flown already? We’re flying next month with our little one who will be 20 months on emirates too. What was the bassinet situation as I’ve booked a bassinet window and middle seat. Were you able to use the bassinet? Our boy is tall and a bit heavier too so I’m a bit worried that they’ll say no to us using the bassinet. Hope you all enjoyed the flight (as much as you can lol!)

    • @hollyhodgson7253
      @hollyhodgson7253 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @micaelyntheron9919 hi! Yes we already flew. Honestly I didn't even ask for the bassinet because it was clearly going to be much too small. They're tiny! And even for people with small babies it can a pain cause every time there is turbulence and the seatbelt sign comes on you have to take the baby out of the bassinet!
      The thing I was most disappointed by was they wouldn't let my 18 month old sleep on the floor against the bulkhead. I thought they'd be more lenient with that rule as he wasn't in the way of any other passengers or staff. I would say 100% book a seat if possible next time, but having said that my 3 year old could not get comfortable in a dea even with the seattosleep pillow. All the best!

    Did your little girl meet the weight requirements for the bassinet? Or are they generally not that strict about it? I desperately want one for my youngest (will be 15 months) for our trip Auckland to UK next month but all the airlines seem to have an 11kg weight limit! Even though they say it's for up to age 2?! She looks so comfy in it! And how amazing not having to hold her on your lap the whole time

      Hi Mandy, thanks for watching! She was 22 or 23 months and they didn’t ask us her weight at any stage, they just set it up after take off. It was honestly amazing - was like a small playpen for her! Hope you have a great time in the UK!

      Hi Katelyn, we flew with Air NZ (Auckland to Singapore) and she was basically 23 months old at the time! She could lie down in it with her knees a bit bent and she slept in it for a few hours. The rest of the time it was like a baby lazy boy / playpen and she was able to lie back while watching movies and sit up to read books etc. it definitely gave us all more space! Now she is bigger I would do the skycouch with Air NZ (for flights where we want to sleep). Hope that helps! ☺️

    Oh my gosh seeing you guys take off with all that gear! I know you need more stuff with a little one but honestly I guarantee you end up sending half that stuff home after a month or 2 of traveling. We ended up with 2 middle size Katmandu packs and our daughter had a school bag size backpack when we traveled- so much easier

    • @goodforgaia
      @goodforgaia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We feel like we didn’t take that much but looking at it on the trolley it does look like a lot haha! One whole carry on backpack is just electronics (laptops, camera gear for filming, our drone etc), and my backpack was all our stuff for the flight, nappies, spare clothes, toys and games for Gaia etc. I’m sure we will consolidate as we go 🤞🤞🤞

    • @megnicholls9931
      @megnicholls9931 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@goodforgaia definitely so much harder with a toddler because you needs toys and a pushchair etc. We went down to 2 carry on backpacks and a smaller school bag size pack. It meant we could get cheap flights all over Europe and we found our packs were better for getting round because the suitcases on wheels aren't practical in subways and cobble roads. It definitely depends on where you go and how much you are moving from place to place. We minimized our clothes a lot. We just got clothes we liked that suited the weather from op shops then re-donated them when we went to a different climate. I'm so excited for you guys and all the adventures you will have ❤

    • @goodforgaia
      @goodforgaia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@megnicholls9931 that is such a clever idea about getting op shop clothes and re-donating when you move on, we are already finding some of our clothes aren’t very practical for the heat. Did you call the airline to book the bassinet beforehand? Was it free? We are planning to book a bassinet but through ‘manage booking’ the bassinet row seats cost $25/each means for 4 of us (two adults, one 6 yr old and one 8 months old) would cost $75 for 3 seats. If we buy one seat just for bassinet with $25 then not sure we will be able to seat together while checking in!
