How to Write a Song as explained by Ray Manzarek and the Doors

  • This is a clip from the documentary "The Doors: Mr. Mojo Risin - The Story of LA Woman" in which Doors member Ray Manzarek describes how "Riders on the Storm" came to be composed. Of particular significance, he demonstrates how a new song may be formed by simply creating a variation or variations based on an old one; and which then can further be embellished, added to, and developed from there. (Here "Old Cowpoke" itself apparently grew out of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again.") As to the charge that such "deriving" is plagiarism, I myself would disagree unless the copy is too obvious and overly parallel; as perhaps could be said to have happened, for example, with George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord." Further and in any event, a song will only succeed if it is a good one. And it can only be a good one if it is founded, at bottom, in love, honest truth, and sincerity, and those kinds of things you cannot fake. For the much longer video from which this clip is taken, see:

They were just messing around with variations and Jim had spare lyrics. This is how to write a rock classic that will be listened to forever. Thanks, and cheers.

Ray had such an easy going style explaining this process and I've been in a band in my 20s and this is an example of how some of our tunes came together 😂❤ Thanks Uncle Ray RIP

So cool to see Ray call that the rain part. Whenever I listen to the song, that part always felt like heavy rain hitting and pouring down a window. So crazy he captured that through music.

Improvisation and an original way to play a song or change it, i have to watch this video to realize that is based on ghost riders on the sky, thats why its not a copy i guess, the rain part, jim lyrics...

It's a good story when early on you say "We gotta add a little jazz to it!" and as we know the rest is history xD

Wasn't it Jim's idea to add rain on the song?, he mentions on the alternative take at the beginning of the song

Odd....I can't imagine Jerry Scheff having a problem with that bass line. It's not that complicated. Scheff was/is a seasoned pro and was would have toured with the the Doors if Morrison had not died. His playing on "Love Her Madly" is great. That bass line, although a brilliant one, is very easy to play on bass. I do not understand the difficulty, unless the bass player had an altered tuning.

Notice how Ray plays the last note on the piano with his thumb by moving his entire hand, it's harder to play the piano than the bass.

@@markbrophy5454Depends on what you are playing. The bass can be just as difficult.

Which octave on the bass? 7th fret E note, on the A string, I'd assume.

I know a bass player told me they play the 5ths a lot of the time which would make that line harder
