- I had the extreme honor of working with Mr. Ray Manzarek at Jerry Harrison's Sausalito Sound recording studio in 2009. He played keyboards on my song "Craigslist," which is a pastiche of The Doors, which of course is the seminal rock group that Ray himself had founded. The Sausalito session was one of the absolute high points of my life -- Ray was amazing. This video documents him learning to play "Craigslist" in the studio. R.I.P. Ray.

Hi Al- I was your recording engineer that day, and I have to say it was one of the high points of my musical life as well. What a fun day; it was so fantastic working with you on this. A great memory, and I am very thankful that you posted this. Been wanting to get in touch with you, but the email address I had for you no longer works...... Mari and I were just reminiscing about this the other day, as it was on Cinco De Mayo 4 years ago. Ray wanted chips and guacamole (and a candy bar!).
It’s so great to find out when your artistic heroes, like Al, are great human beings, too!
@@sandrastreifel6452 totally.
What are you using for the Organ sound? I don't see an audio cable attached to the Nord but I do see a Midi cable.
I'm glad he actually used Ray, shows no one else has that heart in the music
I had no idea Ray was playing on Craigslist! That is so freaking cool! Thanks for sharing Al.
wtf chad wild clay
Wtf I would have never guessed that you would be here
i didn’t expect to find chad wild clay on a frickin’ doors video.
Damn hes a doors fan!
@@thomasross1217 Viva La Doors!! (Kids In The Hall reference)
When I was a kid my parents gave me piano lessons and I hated them. But then I turned 18 and my dad bought me a keyboard and I learned how to play every Doors song, but I mean every last single one. Doors forever.
Cool.
Even Touch Me?
Same here....
@@heatherk1200 Yes...but I couldn't sing it because I can't "croon." Frank Sinatra can croon. Jim could croon. I can't. Good luck. By the way, referring to photo 14 - I certainly hope that you were not ill with what I fear that might have been. I wish to you good health and good luck.
Ray Manzarek is the greatest Keyboardist in rock history and I miss him dearly and RIP Ray Manzarek 1939-2013
Parodying yourself. True legend
He probably felt like it was a new doors song after all these years.
Mark Knopfler did the same: he gave permission to parody “Money for Nothing” so long as he played guitar on it. And he did.
@@vinsgraphics Eric Idle said on the commentary track for The Rutles All You Need is Cash that some of the Yellow Submarine animators did a segment for it and they loved getting paid to make fun of themselves.
This footage is so damn precious! ^_^
Ray was so vulnerable in this video.... And so damn good! What a great document. Thank you Al. Inspiration forever.
Ray had real chops.
The way Manzerek just gets lost in the keyboard when he starts playing is amazing!
The joy of creating music being alive on planet Earth
In other words, sometimes even Ray Manzarek can't play keyboards better than Ray Manzarek.
I just watched this again, and Ray is having SO much fun parodying his own classic riffs. He is looking down on us right now and laughing his head off. So marvelous that he gave the okay to Al to do this song, and joined in the fun. Thank you, Ray!
I know I am 8 years out of date. I want to say that this made me cry; Ray Manzarek is so amazing & knowing he contributed to this song makes it even more amazing. God bless you Al.
Rest in Peace Ray....thanks for the decades of wonderful keyboard work.
This maybe the greatest thing I've ever seen See you on the other side Ray
RIP, Ray. One of the all-time greatest. The true anchor of The Doors.
Never saw this before. Big Doors fan - read his & Densmore's autobiography and I have to say I am not surprised. Ray always struck me as someone who was wise enough to know difference between homage & parody. Very cool.
I appreciate the song sooooo much more now. Had no idea!
Hi AL, I am a big fan of yours and of The Doors. I appreciate merging your artistry with theirs. Sounds amazing.
The most remarkable thing is that clearly Al arranged the whole track, so Ray freaking Manzarek was having a hard time keeping up with Al's pastiche of him!
Ray Manzarek was a living legend!
Throwing in Riders In The Storm during the quiet part and then coming back in full blast to the chorus right on time... That's the good stuff.
Until this moment, I hadn't realized it was Ray Manzarek himself playing on Craig's List! Thank you for posting this, Al! RIP Ray Manzarek.
Phenomenal....I love Ray...Legendary sound
Greatly Missed
R.I.P.
What a humble and gracious man this is. Lending his signature sound (and his blessing) to Al's project shows him to be a real class act. RIP Ray. BTW, Al's band is superb on the track too.
Ray Manzarek was, is and will always be a great legend. Thank You , Ray, for everything. The Doors have been and always a great inspiration for me. Thanks to Al for sharing this with us all.
This has to be one of the coolest things ever! :D How awesome to have the man himself playing along to the parody!! Ray was already legendary in my books, but this just puts him way over the top! \m/
Ray’s “Head bobbing” is Legendary!
I have watched this a good five or six times. Of course Al is great and deserves our reverence, obeisance, and worship for all eternity, but Ray was great, too. As the original composer, Ray could have taken the stance that any way he plays it is correct. The fact that Ray took cheerful instruction and did a good number of re-takes really speaks to his nature. He served the piece more than his ego.
R.I.P. Ray.
GREAT RAY❤❤❤
The man was amazing. He'll be missed, though fortunately his music will live on!
In the presence of a legend and watching him play some wicked keyboards. Al gave Jim and the Doors the respect they're due.
This guy is elegantly grateful...he's beautiful peaceful and has a real feal of timing and wonderfulness that many players don't have... I solute you man
That sound has always been part of my brain's soundtrack.
great video Al,,i too had the pleasure of meeting and video recording one of his last performances in a small club in Canada, great time that I will always remember fondly,,,RIP Ray
The red keyboard looks like a NORD, which is the instrument of choice nowadays for musicians who need a keyboard with a wide variety of sounds.
Thanks for this video, Al, love that song!
For a while in the 60s, he played a Vox Continental, which is also red.😁
Holy shit Al I never knew you got Ray play keys on Craigslist!
R.I.P. Ray.
In my best Ed Sullivan voice:
"Ladies and gentlemen, A Door."
He’s DONE the Ed Sullivan Show.
Two of the most genuine guys in music together here- Al, thanks for documenting the magic here.
Ray, thanks for everything.
Wow. This is the first that I have heard of Ray's passing.
What a great guy.
Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.
Watched the whole thing. Brought a tear to my eye. I love watching talented artists work with all their little techniques and short-hand.
this always puts a smile on my face....ray just having fun...what a wonderful man and musician....
THanks for sharing this!!! Like being in the studio with the master
At first I kept watching this vid cause I'm a huge doors/ ray fan but now I'm at work screaming "I'm on Craigslist baby come on!! "
Loved how Al knows every note and Ray just gets it. Two of my favorite musicans.
Manzarek is so awesome
Ray was and still is the best. Will miss him
Ray was one of my favorite radio DJs back in the 90s. Such a soothing voice and he played great music on his show.
great man legendary keyboardist
the world will miss you but will never forget
i believe that people will still be listening to the doors a thousand years from now
First of all, Al was beyond brilliant in channeling the late, great Jim Morrison in this song. You can see and hear it in the video; it's like Jim himself is singing the song; Al has his very essence down pat. But... to have the legendary Ray Manzarek playing the keyboard riffs... it's like we stepped back in time, and it's the original Doors all over again. I'm eagerly awaiting Al's next magical brilliancy. My brother and I had VIP passes to see Al in New York on the "Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour," which was beyond brilliant. Emo Phillips was SO funny!!
We got to meet Al after the concert. He's truly an amazing person - husband, father, and rock god... yet, amazingly approachable and humble. Kooky, weird, and totally insane - but that's why we love him. Bring on the next album, Al!
This was amazing to see, thanks to whomever filmed this.
Ray: Rest in peace, sweet soul. Such a work of art, thanx for sharing the memories
Wow, thanks, Al! Very kind of you. This is amazing. Thank you for helping us to feel more connected to the man. Farewell, Mr. Manzarek, and thank you.
Weird Al and The Doors are two of my biggest musical influences. Eternal gratitude!!!
What a guy...what a legend,what great music...Loved him,loved the Doors...thanks Al
I just started listening to this
track and little did I know that
Ray Manzarek played on this,
out of sight man ☮️🤘🏾
Thank you for sharing moments with a master who has moved on.
Ray was a legend will be missed dearly. Thanks so much for sharing this Al.
Loved seeing this footage of Ray. Thanks so much for sharing :D
Thanks for sharing Al. I'm glad two of my favorite artists got to meet and collaborate
I did not realize how legit this recording was because I was not that familiar with The Doors. I think your "pastiches" transcend parody and truly add to their respective genres. Great work. Hilarious lyrics, too.
why am i only seeing this now? what a gem of a video! thank you!
Miss you, Ray. All my love and respect to you, always. ROCK ON,DUDE!
Mister Ray will be missed greatly. With out him and Jim Morrison, there would be no doors. RIP Ray.
It was so wonderful to watch this video, this morning - sure did bring a smile to my face! Very cool, seeing Ray work with Weird Al, like this! Slightly lightens the terribly sad news, of Ray's passing. Had the pleasure of meeting Ray & Robbie a couple of years back, at the OC Fair - both very kind & cool gents! Was VERY much looking forward to seeing them again at the Fair, this summer! Ray, you were largely responsible for creating some of the most amazing music, EVER! Thanks Ray, RIP brother!
Thanks Al for posting. RIP Ray.
Thanks for sharing this, Al, it's a great memory of an awesome musician.
What a wonderful memory for you. Awesome. R.I.P, Ray.
What an awesome treat, thank you so much for posting it
Doesn't get any better than this. 2 of my favs. Behind the scenes. So good. Thank you!
RIP Ray. That you were on this song was actually the first time I'd ever heard of you in my young life. You'll be missed. And Al, I'd kill for more in-studio behind the scenes stuff, no matter who it's with!!
I had no idea the real keyboard player from the Doors did this. No wonder is was so perfect. RIP, Ray.
Ray was one of my childhood heroes. He still is.
The doors will always be one of my favorite bands ever. Rest in peace man
Rest in peace Mr. Ray! Thanks for creating a soundtrack for a generation. Thanks for posting this Al.This looks like fun! Love the chips & guacamole story.
Wow, How to add cool sauce to one of my favorites songs.... Find out that Uncle Ray not only inspired the organ track in the song "Craigslist" he played the organ in the song! I love you that much more Mr Al! I am reminding the loved ones in my life that your new album "Mandatory Fun" "drops" the day before my birthday on July 15th! (hint! hint! great gift idea!)
Keep on the Rocking! hope to see you in concert again soon!
Priceless footage Al, thank you for sharing.
OMG! I am retro geeking SO HARD right now!!! When I was growing up I used to listen to my Dad's Doors albums on vinyl (this was in the late 70's and early 80's) and I became a huge fan. I currently own tons of their work and they get heavy rotation on my iPod.
Al has been a musical influence on my life for almost as long and hearing the two together is amazing!
More of a treasure than finding your song was this little gem. Thank you Al.
I love when he plays with other artists from the group I bet it's super fun
I only recently discovered the set of Ray Manzarek videos on TH-cam, where he goes into detail on how he developed the iconic Doors sound, and even on how he met up with the rock god, Jim Morrison; I was overwhelmed. I hadn't realized how much of the Doors sound came from just one person's inspiration.
Even better: I hadn't realized he'd worked on the "Craigslist" project with Al. I thought it was just Al or Rubén Valtierra... to think that Ray himself did what he did so brilliantly for this song... wow. I mean, Al was clearly channeling Morrison when he wrote and performed the song, but Ray Manzarek on the synth is just the icing on the cake. It's over the top brilliant. Another legend, gone forever. Sigh. At least the music will live on eternally...
How have I not found this video before now?😂 Two of the greatest musicians of all time!
He was such a nice gentle guy, I miss him, R.I.P.
Entrancing to watch Ray play. Thanks for sharing Mr. Al. R.I.P. Ray.
Wow! Al, thanks for sharing! Awesome! And what a legendary sound and talent in Ray Manzerik! Just wow! :)
Well, this was sort of AMAZING to watch and listen to ~ thanks Al & RIP Ray!
Listening and watching you perform Craigslist will have a whole new meaning to me now. I can see how much your homage to The Doors meant to Ray, and I'm sure that although he's gone, you'll always carry Ray's memory in your heart. Thanks so much for sharing this with us, Al.
Aww.. Thank for posting this Al! I really love seeing one of the greats noodle around on the keys. RIP Ray, always loved your sound.
Wow, so great to watch him having so much fun. How lucky you were to get the chance to work with him, Al. Thanks so much for sharing. RIP, Ray.
This is GOLD. Thanks for sharing this, Al. Love you, man.
Amazing. Simply an amazing piece of work from a group that's a legend with a keyboard sound so utterly unmistakable and spooky, you can loose yourself in his sounds alone. True proof that the Doors really was a group effort... Man. So much awesome right here. Seriously.
very classy tribute to a legend there al. well done and god speed to ray and comfort to his family. wished he would have joined weird al on stage here in santa rosa last year. ray lived in napa, a half hour away. was a great show, but that would have been awesome!
Thanks for posting that Al. It's exactly what I needed to see from Ray. Your unique role among musicians makes it all the more significant.
5:00 He looks so serious during those lyrics. Musically and vocally it was a great Doors song. Give this to a Doors fan who doesn't know English and they'd think it was a serious cover band.
I played the song in the car once and told my parents that it was an actual Doors song. My Dad, who doesn't speak much English, bought it completely. My Mum eventually caught on that there was something up with the lyrics...
And that’s what’s so hilarious about it. Weird Al can make fun of stuff without being mean
Wow, Al - thanks for posting this. It brings back sweet memories of that day. Look forward to seeing you in July!
Very cool!
Goofing off with some great music.
This is just awesome, thank you so much for posting this! I was lucky enough to see Ray and Robby Krieger in concert a year and a half ago, and it was an amazing show. R.I.P. Ray Manzarek.
Also, all these people posting "ZOMG I didn't know he actually played on this song!?!" really should learn to read album liner notes. :-)
Thanks for sharing the video Al, Rest in Peace Ray, you truly were part of something that changed the world. Not many can day that!
So I saw Al perform this live last month in Portland for the vanity tour, and was shocked when he style parodied “The End” in the middle of the song. It was an awesome show!
Awesome video! Ray was and still is the best.
3:04 "B!" And Ray was in like the 7th dimension. Completely lost in music.
Thank you for sharing this with us, Al. I'm glad you got to work with him.
