that's true, the doors music is very simplified, ray can't play too complicated polyphonic things as like in classical music, but I don't like too much classical music anyway, only some of it is good, the simple one :)
before he passed, he totally should have made a tour where it was just him on a stage telling stories while he sat at the keys. every show would have sold out I'm sure

Perfect venues would have been small cafes and clubs. No more than a few hundred people. A loss to those of us who grew up in the sixties and seventies.

I really wish i cared about Ray more before he died. I really admire him now and it hurts i never really went to a Doors concert or something. I really remeber when my grandparents put a Doors CD in their CD player, and they played “Light My Fire.” They gave us a cd player that day, and i stole their CD at the last moment.

I played keyboards in several rock bands in the 60's&70 "s, I patterned my playing after Ray's style. In my humble opinion he was a great keyboard player.

I met him at the MOMA in NYC purely by dumb luck. I saw him and his wife Dorothy strolling through an exhibit and got legit star struck. I approached him sheepishly and apologized for intruding. He could tell I was a nervous fan and after my third “I just wanted to shake your hand and thank you for all the music” he asked me where I was from. “Oh Detroit? Great city. The Fox, man.” I think he would have talked to me for a while. No one was bothering him except me, and he probably didn’t get approached too often. Anyway, I said again how honored I was to meet him. “Alright man, well thank you. Enjoy the city this weekend. Lots to do.” I felt like a little girl meeting a Beatle or something, LOL. He was one of several living legends I met in my life: Muhammad Ali, Gordie Howe, Barry Sanders. I’ll never forget meeting Ray.
@@JeffintheD man I bet that's awesome ray is soo cool. I've got to meet a few famous people its a crazy feeling. Got to meet Carmine Appice and Jim McCarty at a cactus concert a few years ago. And I met tony hawk when I was 6 or 7, was literally like a little girl meeting the Beatles, and more recently I got to meet Bucky Laskey at a friends house, he built a vert ramp in Aberdeen Maryland, and apparently, that's enough to get bucky to show up. HE walked over an introduced himself like he was just som random guy. I was like"yeah,I think I heard your name before" I didn't get to see him skate though...but that's nowhere as near as cool as getting to me rayman

He got 3rd best musician of 1967. Ravi Shankar was 1st, I forgot who was 2nd. Sometimes (when Jim was passed out), he had to sing on top of his keyboard and keyboard-bass duties. Ray was a very sophisticated and intelligent guy.

Fun Fact - Jim was so timid to begin with he would sing behind a darkened curtain while the band performed without him out on stage. It's only when he peeked his head through to the stage a few times receiving screams from girls in the audience he gathered up enough confidence to come out and perform with the band in person

Agree. There were other rock keyboardists of his generation who were far better than him technically (Jon Lord, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman) but Ray had a MAGIC in his playing that those guys did not possess.

Hearing the Doors as a little kid, it was always the keyboard work that stood out to me; this guy changed my whole way of hearing tunes.

1:05 he says he wasn't a brilliant musician.i don't know much about piano but it's the sound he gave the music is what mattered to me.
He's good, he's got chops. I think he was comparing himself to the kinds of Bill Evans or Booker T, which are much better instrumentist than him. He did create a sound and mood that didn't exist before though, and he did it with many jazz and classical influences. He was one of the best IN HIS FIELD, which is rock'n'roll music with other ramifications. Of course you can't compare him to Keith Jarrett or Chick Corea, as pianists they're a different league altogether.
thats due to the fact that he's actually a smart and a good musician , he knows that there are many people who are better than him , he isnt full of himself , which can be the reason why he seems to be very open to other musicians , and to take influence from other artists , but speaking honestly , i would love to listen to him talking and playing all day , he was truly awesome .

Try playing what Ray did: bass in the left hand, lead/ chords in the right hand. It is not easy. View musicians on TH-cam. Some are better than others. They feel great accomplishment when they acquired the skill to recreate the music Ray made. I am happy to see it live on through other musician’s fingers.

We need people like Ray, with a lot of music culture and heart, with a view on the world above. He analized in a perfect way the doors sound: latin & jazzy drums, flamenco guitar, classical organ playing and haunted and visionary voice. It's not just a rocker, it's an artist. We need it
You have to be open to the energy! If you can open your heart to the energy. That great love energy of the creation of this entire universe, good things will happen to you! BUT, you got to believe! You got to believe in the goodness! You have to open your heart to the energy! You can't be afraid!
And that perfectly explains The Doors. The most fearless, explorative band to have ever been.

A very inspirational story.
Ray is one of my all-time musical idols. He was a creative genius. In fact, all the members of The Doors were geniuses. That band was like the Beatles, four exceptional men who were fated to come together by a higher power, in my opinion. All these years later, their music still stands up as strong and as interesting and unique as ever. The world got robbed when Jim Morrison died. He was only getting started, and he had many more wonderful songs to come.
Man! Ray´s sound takes me back to my days in Vietnam. And I´m a 30 year old spanish guy so...

they were a military experiment. true. look up who jims dad was. and frank zappa. the whole psychedelic scene along with the drugs. it didn't start on it's own.

Watching this just gave me chills. It's beautiful to see the way Ray shows us the process... What a humble and sweet guy. One of the truly underrated musicians out there. RIP Jim and Ray!

This is not only interesting in terms of the history of the group and the songs, it's also the most instructional video on song composition for organ I've ever seen ! Really clear !
This kind of clarity used to exist in the 1950's, 60's, and 70's. But then was being lost, strange forces at work.
He's a great storyteller as well as a great musician. I think it's pretty funny how they formed as a group so effortlessly. Normally bands go through a good few line up changes before they get the right people. Love Ray's personality, very positive. RIP.

I wish they could've taped HOURS of Ray talking, so we could have more documentation of how the magic of how all these Doors songs began. I can listen to his voice and words of wisdom over and over and never grow tired.
What a talent and a great raconteur. To me, he was the Keeper of the Flame who kept the Doors legacy alive, and he unapologetically epitomized the zeitgeist of the 60s.

Amazing how two UCLA Film Students started a Band and met two meditation students Robbie and John and the Doors were complete!
I think it was Destiny! Morrison was writing poetic songs with No Music. He couldn’t play an instrument and yet he found three guys who would flesh out his songs!
Amazing! And Krieger wrote Light my Fire 🔥! The first song he ever wrote became a huge hit for the Summer of 68. And it put them on the map Nationally.
I love how Ray explains the Doors songwriting process. They were a real band with everyone contributing. They had musical chemistry which is a rare thing to find. It made them so good and unique.
They had their own original sound and style. It’s why they are one of the Greatest Rock Bands of All Time!
And Morrison was one the best singers of All time as well. He could sing Blues and Rock and Ballads equally well and he was a Crooner, too!

All we had back in the days were a couple of vids u'd only c a couple of times,no u tube(touch me i may have seen twice&it's still fresh in my mind~awesome) & we'd stare @ the album covers 4 hours,& the live shows¬ as many peeps saw those as they played clubs,no stadiums untill the Doors changed that! thats all we had,well 1 other lil thing, our "special friend the F'n MUSIC! & i hope u'all "DANCE ON FIRE'"as it intends! i do! Well I’m gobsmacked. Never seen this but I have said for decades that Ray Manzarek is the voice of The Doors. One can listen to him all day as he speaks eloquently and intelligently with passion and love for his subject. Since the passing of Jim Morrison he never once, not once in any written or spoken word changed his message or opinion about the group that was his life. Genius.
I was so sad to hear of this great elder statesman passing... Ray had such patience and seemed to feel privileged to have this opportunity to tell his story. Love that guy.

I will never forget seeing Ray Manzarek at the upstage in Port Townsend. The most mesmerizing part was watching him play The Crystal Ship on the piano. I was on the second level so I could just look down at his hands as he was playing and he had the most amazing natural flow about how he expressed the music. Towards the end he fielded questions from the audience about the Doors and answered them. Absolutely unforgettable!
A mesmerizing song. The instrumental bridge is incredibly emotional. Jim's brooding voice combined with the almost sinister chord progressions created one of the most haunting songs ever.
I was blessed to have seen Ray and Robby play front center at barricade for Riders on the storm...2008
To this day one of rhe most meaningful concerts of my life.

God does not need us for entertainment. And for enjoying life you do not need a paradise.
Ray's left and right hand coordination was second to none. No rock keyboardist of that era could play left-hand bass so proficiently. He never depended on the "glitz" of the Hammond B3 and Leslie. Try playing the bass line and organ intro to "Light My Fire"; or the bass line and "rain-run" in "Riders on the Storm". Very difficult!

i used to work in westwood village LA in 1990's and he came to eat a couple of times. one in a generation.

Manzarek was the George Harrison of The Doors. His talent and contribution to same just grows bigger over the years. When you see and listen to him, it's hard to imagine he was the heart of the and outside of Morrison's singing, was the main reason Light My Fire was so great.

I've been on a Doors kick lately, and one thing that has surprised me to no end is how different Mr. Manzarek was from his public image. The Oliver Stone movie (and some other portrayals I've seen) made him seem serious almost to the point of being humorless. Nice to see what a vibrant man he really was.
Morrison & Manzarek reunited again.
This is a HUGE loss, for all modern music, how will this gap be filled once more.
But what he says in the beginning of this video, O I WILL FOLLOW those words forever.

When I lived in L.A., I was a magazine editor, and I met and really liked Adam Holzman, then with a band called the Fents. I went to see him perform at the Troubadour and walked in and there was the band's producer, Ray Manzarek, sitting at the bar. I introduced myself and had a beer with him, just long enough to chat for a few moments. It was such a cool moment. Then, when the book "No One Here Gets Out Alive" was released, there was a party at the Whisky. The three remaining doors played, with guests including some of Blondie and the Knack, and Top Jimmy. They did seven songs and it was transporting. When I listen to the Doors, I'm still 15.
After watching videos like this it becomes apparent that Jim had the absolute perfect collaborators / musical soul mates for his muse to flourish.

@@tiffsaver No this piano bass is an electric piano bass, no electronic components in it. It is the bottom end of a fender rhodes electric piano. I own a 1971 fender rhodes piano bass

I already know that a Rhodes piano is, my band's first keyboard played used one. I also know that the one that Roy Manzarak used was just the bottom end of an electric piano.
I also know that an ELECTRIC BASS GUITAR is called an "ELECTRIC BASS" (such as a Fender Jazz or Fender Pro) to distinguish it from a non-electrified BASS FIDDLE. I also know that you're a anal retentive jagoff eager to impress me with your esoteric knowledge, signifying NOTHING. So do we fully understand each other now??

Ray was on a radio station and I called in the host said "This is Ray in Agawam calling". Ray said, "Hi, Ray this is Ray". Have the CDR somewhere kind of had trouble asking a question. He really was the heart behind the Doors. RIP Ray from Ray...

Wow - 1968 - the first affordable home stereo systems, I was in 8th grade, just getting over a year of the drum solo in innagatadavida on the pocket 8 Transistor - and along comes Light my Fire. One of my first albums. I am so glad you shared the dope. Will look you up.
Stereo sonic placement was finally perfected in 1974 by Steely Dan, but you guys were the local L.A. Lizard Kings.
Ray was the embodiment of the 60's and an amazing raconteur.

6:49 this hit me hard. Reading Jim's lyrics and feeling the beat, the harmony, the solos, The Doors became my favorite band because I could identify to it. To read Jim's protests and his fears and his imaginative mind to then vibe to an entire journey through musical notes is awesome. And now, to hear Ray's message, when I'm in such crucial state for my life is heartfelt. Thank you, Ray, from even the dead you give me messages through music and through wise words. Really thankful.
