- Figured I would make a video on the method I use to change transmission fluid in my Sienna minivan. It really is very simple and only requires a but more attention and a few more tools vs. changing your engine oil.
Tools needed:
- Transmission Funnel (or similar)
- 10mm Allen /.Hex head socket
- 3/8 ratchet wrench
- torque wrench
- Measuring cups (if you want to try to use the method I used)
Supplies Needed:
- 5 quarts of Toyota T-IV Rated transmission fluid
- Drain plug crush washer from toyota
Specs:
- Toyota shop manual calls for 3.7 quarts of transmission fluid during a drain and fill ** (see note below)
- drain plug bolt torqued to 36ft/lb
** While Toyota specs 3.7 quarts to be used for a drain and fill my van drained slightly over 4 quarts. This is why I used the measuring cup method to figure out exactly how much fluid came out of the vehicle so that I know exactly how much to put back in.

Great job and well worth doing. If you have a vacuum pump try my method I posted - works great. One other tip you might consider to make the measuring easier. Fill the Motts jug up to the top with old fluid. Mark that with a sharply or get get it to a place you can repeat. Pour that old stuff out and then fill remainder in the Motts again. That second fill I presume will be somewhere in the middle. Mark that level with the sharply. Empty it.. now either use another Motts or use the same one - fill it full with new fluid to the first mark. Pour that into the car. Refill to the second sharply mark (if a new container put them side by side and fill to mark). Pour into the car. No need to measure quantities in a measuring cup greatly reducing spill potential etc. I have a bunch of old clean orange juice containers just for that purpose. Thanks for posting!

I only spent a total of $40 for purchasing the transmission fluid and some tools; and I saved $119. The auto shop usually charge between $139 and $169 for the transmission fluid service.

The drain plug washer information was worth the price of admission. Thank you. I'm going to do this and add Lucas automatic transmission fluid conditioner.
Be careful with the Lucas stuff.. these new transmissions are very specific to their fluid type. I know from experience Dodge doesnt like that stuff at all. After the Dodge ive never used it in anyother car.. I would just use new fluid specific for the car and no additive.. You dont need it when the fluid is new!!!!just saying

I called Lucas and had a nice phone conversation with them before I did it. It was over a thousand miles ago and things seem fine. Pulled the plug drained about 3 quarts put in Lucas and transmission fluid.
If anyone is interested in also replacing the pan gasket and filter I was able to do it last night. All of the pan bolts are 10mm and there are about 4 of them that are impossible to reach. In order to get to them I had to raise the engine up 2 inches (easier than it sounds.) first support the transmission with a jack. there is a 19mm nut to remove from transmission mount right behind the drivers tire. There is also a front engine mount with a 17mm nut to remove. Once both nuts are removed you can jack the tranny up a few inches.
Removing remaining pan bolts then take out the pan and then you have access to the filter. Replace filter and put on new pan gasket. Hold gasket in place with zip ties and start putting the 10mm bolts back in. Tighten each bolt to 6ft/lb and drain bolt to 36ft/lb.

Nice job I just replaced my 2006 Toyota Highlander’s trans fluid with that exact fluid. It shifts nicely and feels great. Gotta love Castrol

Thanks for posting. I was hoping to see a gasket and filter change as well. The frame on my 2005 sienna is completely in the way of 4 pan bolts and can't figure it out. My gasket old and cracked.
Just a tip, make sure that it's Type T-IV not just TOYOTA. I've seen some TOYOTA compatible fluids that were NOT type T-IV. I used the same fluid that this guy used in the video for a while now and it is just fine in my Sienna.
Full Synth. Is superior. What you use is not as good
@@captainamericaamerica8090 All Type T-IV fluid is synthetic, it's part of the requirement to be T-IV approved. Mine even says Full Synthetic on the jug.

At the end when you go through the gears - 4, 3, 2, and 1, you aren't actually engaging those gears. It says in 1st. There is no reason to do that. You can't engage gears higher than 1 unless you are driving.
+Matt Griffin This is not entirely true. Most auto transmissions will "engage" the torque converter as you cycle through P>R>N>D>L this WILL cycle fluid. You are partially correct , each "gear pack" will not get FRESH fluid but when you aren't dropping the pan you aren't draining these areas anyway. You are mainly just draining and filling the torque converter. (This is not usually a bad thing unless your transmission is already damaged, and why most shops won't touch ATF if over 100k miles.)

Did you ever hear of "lifetime fluid" ? All that means is that when the transmission suffers an early death from old nasty dirty fluid that the fluid lasted the "lifetime" of the transmission. It's a sneaky way to tell people the truth and lie at the same time. You can easily double or even triple the life of your transmission by doing fluid changes every 35-50K miles.
could you help with a leak in the trans line towards the front of the van? please tell me how to change the hose and what size is the hose?

No in fact it made the shifting better especially first starting out as it revved very high before finding gear. I did this 3 times in about 15K miles and it shifted great. I also found the torque converter plug on other side of regular drain plug and this fluid looked like mud. No joke mud! It was about another 1.5 qts. I sold/gave the van to brothers-in-law about 55K miles later at 228K and shifting was still smooth. Key is drop and refill not a complete flush. I did the 3 over 15K miles.
@@sirsweetness8332 For sure my dude. I just performed the drop and refill on my van and so far so good. I was hearing a lot of back and forth from car guys and mechanics alike. Idk why just because "TOYOTA" says its for life people believe it? All fluid breaks down over time. I'll update after a few hundred miles.
I used the Castrol Transmaxx IMV as well. My 2005 sienna took 4 quarts

Seriously just do the math and figure out what the container is and fill it!!! 2 gallon jug =4L skip a few steps here... Dont worry you will be ok!!! LOL I was actually typing when I heard you do exactly what I was about to suggest.. Good job and good updated info!!! Except for the gear cycling part... Its drive or nothing Didnt you notice there was absolutely no difference between 1-2-3???

The filter is under the pan I believe. I didn't end up replacing it in this video.
Good video, thanks for posting. In the future I would suggest editing the video to eliminate things like dropping the aluminum washer and retrieving it. I suggest checking out Scotty Kilmer (he has posted many car repair vids his youtube channel), who is good at editing to get just the nitty-gritty frames and condensing something like this into a 5 to 10 minute video. Just a suggestion, good job nonetheless.

Actually I am in the same position as you. I need to make an updated video about it but I was all set up to take a month off from my job and travel yet keep my job when some other things in my life kinda went haywire. I ended up putting the major trip off for a bit until things calm down. For the moment I am still going to travel in the van but just take some short trips. Keep me updated about your trip as well. Changing the oil twice over is a little OCD, lol, but at least you know it's done right and it looks crystal clean. What is the status on your job? I actually quit my office job some weeks ago to 'live life' and be 'free' for a while - but ended up retracting and staying. I kinda realized that the only thing preventing my being homeless(except for savings) is the fact I have an income. Interested to know are you still planning on leaving your job or staying?
I'm sure you can use other transmission fluid but I would only use Toyota oem just to be safe
I have the 2005 Sienna and when I changed the transmission fluid and engine oil, I did not have the jack up the car. I guess you jack it up for purpose of filming the video to provide a better view.
The hose that is connected to the transmission cooler got ripped and lost the whole amount of fluid and the car doesn’t move. How much should I add now when I don’t know how much it was. ? 😞
Great video, but I believe there is actually close to 10 - 12 quarts total in the transmission. You are only draining what is in the pan. So that nice new oil is being mixed with a greater amount of old oil
+Jeff Mack Toyota transmission are very small and I dont believe they can hold that many quarts,Are you giving your opinion because you did one or you just guessing ?
Draining partly ....that is the way this is done. There are reasons for that.

you use the wrong type transmission fluid for that Toyota sienna. it recommends ws t4 . not universal Castrol.

He used the correct type of fluid. There is no ws t4. It's Toyota T-IV that is a very old spec from the 90s, very similar to Dexron III, and was replaced by Toyota WS in 2006. Castrol IMV covers the T-IV spec perfectly. I've been using it in my 03 Matrix for thousands of miles and others have had great success with it.

So I heard some say it takes 4-5 qrts? Is it really nessasary to measure how much it drains out?.. I mean couldn't you just put 'let's say 4qrts' back in and then check the dip stick and just keep adding to it?

You jack it up on the drivers side for an oil change.
Passenger side for transmission.
For ease of drain and a more complete drain/faster.

Yo I have a 2008 Toyota sienna and the transmission fluid is dark brown and it has some crums to and I'm scared to take it for an transmission fluid Change cuz I hear people say that you should never change it cuz it can damage the transmission
Flushing the transmission can, I've never had a vehicle fail due to a drain and fill though. Flushing it is not the same as a drain and fill. If it's as bad as you said I'd change it ASAP.

When in doubt, call the parts dept for any Toyota dealership and ask them to tell you the recommended quantity of fluid.

Filter change is unnecessary and filter nowadays are internal. "Contrary to what Toyota says" manufacturer knows their cars more than all of us combined does. Sure, go ahead and change it, if you want to go extra mile.

There are also two magnets in the pan that the gear-mesh filings cling to. If you don't clean them (pan off) then those little conductive pixy dust particles can wreak havoc with your servos and sensors- some of which are magnetic.
Those magnet will get dirty soon as you clean them (nextweek). I am not joking, go ask Ericthecarguy

The dealer should have it in stock. I had to have them pull up the parts diagram and pointed it out. They are quite a bit bigger than an oil drain plug washer.

It is actually 3.7 quarts but sometimes previous mechanics filled more than that so that what you found. 4 quarts will not hurt.

"Allen head" are also referred to as "socket head". "Hex Head" is a standard hex nut/bolt.

Why? You don't think Aisin 0WS is the equivalent of Toyota WS? Aisin makes the transmission.
Close to insane . Change your filter , as in remove tranny pan . Drain radiator tranny connection at bottom of radiator . Never just drain with pan bolt , always remove pan . Use only full synthetic oil . And repeat proper oil change on every transmission every 10,000 miles . I'm a professional mechanic .

The filter/screen is good for 90,000 miles. I've already done three drain and fills on our transmission before 47,000 miles. At 90,000 miles, I may drop the pan and change the filter/screen. (If this world is still here by then.)

Wrong do a proper drain every 10,000 . Meaning drain radiator tranny connection at the bottom , remove pan , change filter . Use full synthetic . Do complete flush every 30,000 on top the the proper oil changes .
