- This is a video on how to replace the transmission fluid and filter on a 2000 Toyota Sienna XLE (first generation) with 224,000 original miles on original engine and transmission. Thank you for posting this! I'm getting ready to do a transmission fluid change on my 1999 Sienna with 209,000 miles and was a little nervous I might goof something up. This gives me a little more confidence to do the job!

update: I just went to Massachusetts and back, then also to florida and back ( I live in North Carolina) and everything is shifting perfect!
@@averagecargarage1704 Haha, nice! I did the change on mine and all is well! I'm actually in the middle of a trip from Indianapolis out to Phoenix, currently in New Mexico and it's been shifting great!

Isn't there a 10mm hex bolt under the pan you removed to drain the fluid.

do it confidently!, the Sienna is a very easy van to work on.
here shall be my template and I only can hope that a clogged filter is my problem, I'm having slippage when hot, and at highway speeds. had to pull over. cool down. then would shift. we'll see if this is the problem.
Right now the Sienna is at 253,477 and the tranny is working excellent still, keep me updated I hope that nice fresh fluid fixes your problem, do you know when the transmission fluid was changed last?

Do you remember roughly how much fluid came out when you drained the pan?
I really liked the video and it was very instructive, could you tell me what liquids you used for the change, were 2 right?

For Transmission oil ,
You need to use Valvoline Dex/Merc
Instead of Valvoline Multi-Vehicle Full Synthetic.

1. Factory drain plugs are Not magnets.
2. This color of fluid is not 220k original.
I'd say maybe 50k or less.
I own a 2000 XLE exact copy of this guy's van. I've owned it since 120,000 miles. The previous owner had Toyota drop pan, and do a service at 100k. My van now has 185, light easy use, and my fluid has zero red color left. Dark brown, but no burnt smell. It was bright pink at 120k. I just did a filter, magnet clean, and 10 quart exchange. Shifts perfect still.
Fluid level is checked with engine running, in Park. Best is at operating temp of trans. Meaning at least 5 minutes of driving.
Also I've driven many of this generation Sienna. Many have a slow lazy 2 gear shift. No slip, just slow.
You can adjust the shift cable to the transmission. At the throttle body there are 2 cables. The rear one is the cable to the throttle, the one closest to the front of the van goes to the front bottom of the trans. It has 2 14mm nuts. Adjust that a tiny bit and all the shifts will become a little bit firmer. It works wonders.
@@trekinseattleI tightened the shift cable awhile ago because I thought it was the throttle cable. How would I know of to tight?

Ty Dude for the video. How did you check to make sure you put in sufficient new fluid? ( I measured the old fluid that came out and put in the same exact amount)
You are welcome thank you for watching I recommend this for any car that has a transmission that still shifts fine :) . There is a dip stick with a red handle that you can use., but the method you used of putting in the same amount you took out also works. I would get the car to operating temp and then I would check the level with the dip stick just to make sure :). Happy holidays my friend .

How the van running good cause i heard if you change the fluid that dark the transmission might start acting up i have a 2003 with 117k on it with burnt fluid and the first shift its kind of hard shifting what you think should i do im scare please
Hiii yes it is working great 👍🏼the Sienna right now has 231,600 miles and no problems at all. I took it though some hard snow driving with zero issues. Popular thinking foes like this: if your van shifts without problems then do it. If you are having problems it’s hard to say. Make sure your fluid is at the right level.

I just bought a 2002 Sienna w/94k mi. sight unseen & I haven't picked it up yet. Curious WHERE's the heater core & is it really easy to replace like on my '99 Camry 4 cldr or do you have to gut the entire dash? The cooling system is working fine as far as I know, but it would be NICE to know.

@@Oilers007I had 285,000 on my 03 Sienna only reason I retired it was because of east coast rust.
I could be wrong but these transmissions need to be filled on a level area so my incline in the front of the car on ramps you’re not gonna get the correct fluid fill level or drain off.
You failed before even took the drain cap off
What drain plug was that you removed above the plug in the pan?
its the transmission drain plug which sits right above the transmission oil pain and it takes either a 3/8 or a 1/2 inch socket wrench by itself :)

Okay and the pan drain plug is just if you were doing a drain and refill? You did a nice job and im planning on doing mine this weekend. I just bought mine 2002 and it had 224,000 on it too! But very dark. How is yours shifting?
@@michaelmiro6163 yes Mike I also chose to use the drain plug on the side because I ran a lesser chance of stripping the head since it takes the socket wrench by itself. I have been driving on the new trans oil for about 3 months now. I went to Massachusetts and then florida and back to NC where I live with no issues at all it shifts great! I am so happy with the results :). Also I did not use the original Toyota stuff. I use generic transmission oil I buy from Walmart and it does just great :)
@@michaelmiro6163 I changed my fluid about 2 years ago. I used a wix filter. Putting the new gasket with the pan was a little tricky. I don't remember why. I do remember using zip ties to help me with the problem to get everything back up and bolted.
@@zmarssojourner7435 the wix" filter, I think it's a steel mesh. We only use Full Sythn. Fluids. They last much longer! Protect better= MAX LIFE
Where's the FILTER?? WE DIDN'T SEE👀👀👀YOU CLEAN IT OR REPLACE IT
I replaced it for a new one, I purchased it a t the local auto parts store :)
use this used oil for chain saw machine.
that's great use for the oil, I just took several gallons of used oil to the recycling center

I bought a gallon of Havoline MaxLife multi vehicle full synthetic Automatic transmission fluid! I bought it at Walmart it comes in a red bottle :)

A rubber timing CHAIN has never, ever existed, except in your imagination. A rubber timing BELT, however, does exist.
The 06+ has the rubber oil lines, bad timing chain guides, weaker transmissions.... hardly an upgrade
This first gen has a non interference engine. Very special
Where do you put the fluid in
Use the dipstick port for when you check the transmission fluid level. Use a funnel also :)

it ended up being less I bought extra just in case, I used the rest on a different project
