This was their first Top 40 hit in the US, in 1974. A year later, "Bohemian Rhapsody" came out, and the rest is history. I recommend "You're My Best Friend" for your next one. For your next Meat Loaf song, I recommend "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)".

“The Red Special" as Brian May's guitar is called or sometimes “The Fireplace.” That’s the guitar that Brian May (guitarist of Queen and physics researcher) began building with his father circa 1963, when Brian was about 16 years old. Lacking money but not ingenuity, the father-son team built the guitar using materials found around the home. The neck of the guitar was fashioned from an 18th-century fireplace mantel, the inlays on the neck from a mother-of-pearl button. For the body, they used wood from an old oak table. Then the bricoleurs combined a bike saddlebag holder, a plastic knitting needle tip, and motorbike valve springs to create a tremolo arm. He still plays it as of last night at the Queen + Adam Lambert concert in Belfast Ireland.

    • @jonathanlocke6404

Appreciate you detailing that. To my ears, that sound is completely Brian's own. I know no one had ever sounded like that before, and I don't think anyone ever really has since. Possibly even guitarists inspired by him still sort of steered clear of copying him too much, just because it is immediately identifiable.

I think it hit so close to home for me because I was hospice worker caring for AIDS patients for much of the 1980s. For more classic Queen try "We are the Champions" "We Will Rock You" "Somebody to Love" "Show must go On" or Freddie's duet with Montserrat Caballe "Barcelona". Please show some respect to the other members of the group. Brian May on lead guitar, John Deacon on Bass and Roger Taylor on drums. All four members wrote hits for the band. If you really want your mind totally blown by Queen and Freddie, I recommend watching their entire Live Aid performance from 1985 (6 songs, 22 minutes). This song is so underrated; it's truly a masterpiece. It has everything that makes a great Queen song great. The harmonies, Brian's guitar solo/layered harmonics, and the quirky style . As for what's next, you could pick just about anything and it will be so different than what you've heard before. This was the very first song by Queen that I ever heard, back in the day (I know, I don't look that old😜), and it is still great. Freddy is, arguably, the greatest Rock singer of all time. And, the rest of the band are terrific as well, making up one of the greatest groups in Rock history.
There is another great Rock singer, Jon Anderson, of Yes, who is also in one of the greatest bands ever, and I wish you knew him better. His voice is ethereal, almost heavenly. Yes is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which has not even inducted Blue Oyster Cult yet (which is a musical crime, by the way). Yes is Big Time, and yet you guys, whom I love, have reacted to them only once, and not even to one of their best songs, even though OOALH is a very good song. So, please, give their greatness another listen. "Roundabout" is always the best song to hear upon first listening to Yes. It is stunning.
