    College board definitely inflates costs, and they shouldn't be allowed to do what they do, but they are not a nonprofit. They are a not-for-profit company, which doesn't sound like a big difference, but is actually very important. I think that this shows how fucked up the education system we use is, where a company that makes profit can have a pure monopoly over such a basic human right as education. We shouldn't blame companies for being companies, we should go one step further and blame the system that allows these companies to exploit people so blatantly.

      I took 9 ap tests over junior and senior year and I enjoyed ap classes way more. It weighted my gpa and the classes were way faster so I got bored less. I was a horrible student and didn’t do homework, and spent at least half the time with my mind elsewhere.
      I achieved three 4s, cuttjg down 3 classes from my college experience, and despite not getting calc credits, I was ahead of my peers in physics and maths due to ap calc ab and bc, and physics 1&2. My literacy skills from ap lang helped loads.
      I am currently a sophomore in college taking 5 stem classes per semester and it’s SO FUN. Love hard courses, I support the idea of advanced courses.

      Fair point, but dual enrollment trumps all. Depending on your school maybe it is different, but mine offered it and its free of cost. Granted, I live in a more-funded area, but work-load and experience wise, highly recommend. If all goes well, I'm looking at getting all As without breaking a sweat, versus originally having a ~3.0gpa overall from the last few years destroying myself over the few APs I took.
      AP workload is unreasonably harder than the OG class itself, last one semester instead of one year, and are generally regarded the same by colleges.

    • @justinbuddy56
      @justinbuddy56 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      Couple of people have mentioned it but yeah, don’t do AP classes, take dual enrollment classes if you can. It’s free, it’s a typical class structure with typical testing, and gives you 3 credits per each class you pass. Also counts for high school transcript.

    • @sushirollthug
      @sushirollthug 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      No, if your school offers dual enrollment community college courses, you should take those over AP, since AP doesn’t always cover your undergraduate classes

  • @Ehecatl1111
    @Ehecatl1111 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +157

    To be competitive for T-20 universities, you’d ideally aim to take 10 AP classes. Each AP class costs $100 to enroll, so that's $1,000 upfront. Then, you have to pay for the AP exams, which are $105 each, plus a registration fee that brings the total to $120 per exam. For 10 exams, that’s $1,200, bringing your total to $2,200 so far.
    But it doesn’t stop there-you also need test prep to do well on these exams. Let’s estimate $500 of test prep per course, which adds $5,000. Now you’re at $7,200.
    Next, you need to prepare for the SAT. SAT prep costs a minimum of $500, plus $100 to register for the test. That’s another $600, bringing your total to $7,800. Once you’ve taken your tests, you need to send these scores to colleges, which costs $15 per AP score and SAT score. Sending scores for 10 APs and the SAT adds $165, making it $7,965.
    Beyond testing, you need extracurriculars (ECs) to boost your resume, which often include activities like internships, shadowing, retaking exams to improve scores, and test prep for any retakes. You’ll also need essay coaches to polish your applications. Let’s conservatively estimate $5,000 for all of this, taking your total to $12,965.
    And all this? Just to apply to schools with a 3% acceptance rate, many of which prioritize their rankings over the human cost of their application process. This is how the system looks from the perspective of students: a series of overwhelming expenses and hoops to jump through.

    • @SiloTheatrix
      @SiloTheatrix 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +24

      $500 per test prep course? $5,000 for retaking exams and free/paid internships? Essay coaches should not be that much.
      Don't just apply to 3% acceptance rate schools, they don't have much to offer, and you can apply more than once in your lifetime.
      This is quite exaggerated and misleading.

    Late 20s Former high school teacher here. The scam from their monopoly is so evident in retrospect.
    Don't stress about the SAT. Abort the system with your knowledge.
    Colleges don't weigh it as much as accomplishments you can put anymore. Ivy Leagues that needs high SATs are also overrated in regards to skill (my english classmates who graduated from harvard were insufferable and awful writers).
    Spending hours each week prepping for the SAT's was also one of the biggest time wasters I did. I rank it below video games because there's some transferable knowledge unlike pointless 500 word essays and quizzes written by underpaid english grads.
    Do study for the AP test though. You can save hundreds if not thousands intuition from AP credit. Your class is just another high school grade. However, If your class doesn't actively prep for the test, tell your teacher.
    I love how hopeful you are at the end. I told every student I taught not to worry about tests and helped abolish state testing with question 2 in MA. I'm hopeful this racket can end one day.

    I have adhd and apparently a actual diagnosis was not enough to show how severe it is and don't have a psychoeducational evaluation that is not available to me. Collegeboard just basically decides that your diagnosis just isn't good enough, which is ableist bullshit. Ended up having the worst proctor for the June SAT, who allowed people to make too much noise and made noise herself. You don't need to eat chips my god.
    Also about the data, the context texts and emails I get is so annoying, no amount of unsubscribing and blocking stops these people.

    • @gertrude1585
      @gertrude1585 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      i dont have ADHD but it should be illegal for ppl to hit a full pack of chip, get 3 semi to back up in front of the class and an AC unit that rattle so loud you cant even hear yourself thinking, ESPECIALLY with that one annoying kid wich a mechanical keyboard that just add to the mayem. like wtf how am i supposed to focus n work?

    • @foxplaysindies
      @foxplaysindies 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@gertrude1585 omg yes it's annoying for everyone adhd or not. In my exam there was this guy that left for about 30 mins and the proctor talked to him at the door, didn't let him in, but then let him in a lil bit later??? I couldn't hear the conversation they had. He then preceded to make noise with candy wrappers bc the proctor thought it be a amazing idea to let everyone get candy at any point in the test.
      Mechanical keyboards and bringing a mouse with a laptop should be banned. Bc the trackpads are relatively pretty quiet but when 20+ people have a mouse going click click click click loudly, and they have a perfectly good trackpad to use makes me go insane. Like its one thing if its a computer lab but we all had to bring laptops.
