    Helpful Tip! I live in Florida and harvested over a 150 of Danny's Cherokee Tan pumpkins last September and some sweet potatoes last October, I turned one of my extra bedrooms into a food pantry with the 5 Wire shelf racks, about 6 of them placed all around the walls of that room! Most of the racks store my canned goods and such but I utilized 2 1/2 of them to store the pumpkins and sweet potatoes! I placed an Indian blanket over the window to keep the room dark during the daytime, and since they are in a controlled 70- 72' A/c environment, that seemed to work good for storing them! The sweet potato's yield was only about 80 Sweet potatoes, and they for lasted me without going bad and eventually the ones that I had left still in early summer started pushing out slips, so I utilized them for making more slips for re-planting, and the Pumpkins, I still have 4 left today and they still are firm! Me and the chickens ate most of the pumpkins, and some I gave away right away last year from the Harvest to neighbors! That was an unexpected harvest from only 5 seeds planted into the deep hole food scrap method of DTG's into a 3 foot circle, which those vines ended up going everywhere up to 75-100 feet from the original circle in all directions, but it also made roots all along the vines as they were growing! Any vine borer's didn't have a chance in stopping those vines! LOL! Would have had over 200, but some horses and other animals had gotten into them and ate some along the way, but I didn't mind, because I could see I was going to get plenty! But any who, enough chit-chat! I hope this helps somebody!

    Last year I threw the vines back on the bed and covered them with mulch. When spring rolled around they all sprouted just fine- I had my doubts. I didn't have to start slips this year and had a great harvest. (Credit to Wild Floridian for the idea)

    Great sweet tater harvest. I arrived a little late to watch it live but am enjoying it now bout half an hour late. I like your terra preta experiment very much. You may be interested in a non gardening channel that I watch a bit of called Below the plains. Guy digs up old outhouse pits for bottles and artifacts. Apparently the old timers threw wood ash in the pits along with their trash glass. Wood ash kept the smell down. If you could imagine the glass as being broken pottery and if there was more bone material in there I think it would be pretty close to terra preta. The soil does appear much darker in these old latrine pits than the surrounding soil.

    Mounded beds made over cardboard with lots and lots of wet yard stuff from the goat area covered with wood chips from the tree guy and then planted right after with sweet potato slips - oh my - most awesome bed of sweet potatoes by far that we've ever grown over that rock hard clay . . . then the next year we took that same bed and threw in some potatoes and they grew nicely and when that got done I moved all that bed onto cardboard to start a bed to move 1/3 of our strawberries into - probably 1/100th of the strawberries . . . we shall see how that goes. But the mounds grow wonderfully.

    I bought some sweet potatoes at the store and stuck them in the ground and all I have is little leaves about the size of my thumb and seeds. They vine and make a berry looking thing that has a black seed inside. It's everywhere but not a sign of potatoes yet. Great show. It answered several questions. Thank you both very much. Great Job. I live in Arkansas. I wonder about grocery row gardening here?. I'm in all clay here. I dig a bath tub looking hole and throw the clay away and fill up the hole with compost and soil. I have a very small garden. It's very labor intensive to make the beds.

    • @meanqkie2240
      @meanqkie2240 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Try just mounding up Compost, leaves, manure, and whatever materials you have available on top of cardboard to create new soil on top of the existing surface. You don’t have to have side boards for a “raised bed” of compost. You can break up a little clay or powder it and stir into water to splash over the new materials like David does in the terra preta experiment videos. Add some of the existing clay mineral content to the new soil forming. Mow it all close first, cover with wet overlapping cardboard like back to Eden method. Create compost and mix with a little existing dirt/soil just for microbes and the earthworms will eventually till it for you. They love the cardboard!

      Correction the berry has 3 or 4 black seeds each. I got a bunch of them to look at. I have them drying. This looks a lot like morning glory vines at the river. But no morning glories. Just all these brown berry sized objects with seeds. I got scads of them

    My wife makes Pumpkin bread and her sweet Potatoe bread tastes about the same. It's a sweet bread with cinnamon added. She has also made apple bread.. If you want, I'll hit her up for a recipe.
    I started using copper tools in my garden. I made a copper sickle, next I need a copper hoe. But now I'm thinking about a shorter copper cutlas machete. I know I can forge that bend.. But the copper itself may cost $40 or more. Copper gets expensive real fast. I made some cool hand forged knives . Some are mixed into my pictures. But the forging with copper was pretty cool.. I misplaced my copper sickle and was worried about it. So I dreamed about where it was. But you should have seen that copper sickle in my dream. It looked WILD.. Gleaming and glistening. It looked like it was sprinkled in fairy dust or something.. I had put it in the tool box of my truck. Relief!

      @@davidthegood if your selling the white tater slips I'd like a dozen or 2. What's your "store" name and what platform do you sell on? (I'd like a few yam air taters too)

    Scrubfest PSA: plant trading in the parking lot is prohibited however the nursery will be open and it’s being expanded currently. Plants are very inexpensive there especially the ones propagated there.
    Looks like I am assigned the task to patrol the parking lot to make sure plant trading is not going on.

      That is funny. There are some potential issues with the state if plants come into the nursery from outside. :(

    Your microphone was intermittently loud and quiet, Likely needs cleaning or repair.
