I found last summer here in central Mississippi, my tomatoes that were growing intertwined with cucumbers had NO horn worms or other pests. At the same time my tomatoes growing alone had tons of caterpillars... so I trimmed the cucumbers so they wouldn't suffocate the tomatoes and got amazing results from both

I've got a volunteer tomatoe plant in one of my beds from an heirloom purple tomatoe plant that dropped a couple bad ones last year that is growing like crazy. It popped up back in December and rather that pull it out or repot it and bring it inside, I decided to just let it go and see what it did. Figured it would die from frost or cold (even here in Central Florida) in January.... Nope! It's loaded with blooms now!! Love it when things just happen naturally.

My family was kinda getting spoiled by me bringing a handful of fresh tomatoes to them in December and January. I swear I saw a tear in my daddy's eyes when I told him my plants died 😂

I am a huge fan of tomatoes that have grown wild from store-bought hybrid/crossbred seeds. They revert to the smallest of 'cherry' tomatoes, are very disease resilient, and provide massive crops of the tastiest tiny tomatoes you'll ever taste. They make awesome sauces and are the best for salads.
You can test straw or manure for herbicide contamination by doing a sprout test. Try growing a few beans (they sprout quickly) in a pot with the straw or manure in it. Takes a few weeks. If the foliage is twisted, don't use it.

I have Everglades tomatoes that survived the one frost we had, they aren’t producing now but they are still green. If they can survive another 5 weeks the can get beyond the frost date and grow another year.

David, I have a broader question for you. What are your thoughts on starting seeds early indoors/transplanting from indoors to out. It's getting that time of year to start some warm weather crops indoors. What do you think about direct sowing tomatoes and peppers and the plants it seems most gardeners these days are always starting indoors. I see some Cali gardeners on social media that start basically everything indoors/greenhouse before transplanting. Am I the only one that enjoys the easy of direct sowing?
Tomatoes are one of the rare more tropical type veggies that i actually can quite reliably griw in our cold summers 🥶 (please dont ask how the winters are then, if the summers are cold 😂 ) I focus on small tomatoes, cherry ones etc, grow them in my polytunnel, and when anything starts to ripen, i just bring them in the house asap before a frost gets them.. and in that way the plants can start to focus on ripening the next ones 🍅🍅🍅 The good thing though is we really dont have any remarkable pests attacking tomatoes; its just too cold for those 😅

Rive read that rabbit manure actually rates better than cow manure. They are cheaper to keep than a cow, can be used for meat, and the manure can be applied immediately. I have a big garden over 2000 sq feet and six rabbits keep my garden thriving. I feed the rabbits from the garden, and I don't run the risk of introducing broadleaf pesticides.

Fantastic video. I've been hit with aminopyralid-tainted manure too. The only manure I use now is chicken, and I even test that first. If I could make enough compost I'd stop using that too.

David, I've been catching big carp and letting them rot in closed buckets of water. Can I just pour the slurry over my fruit trees, or should it be diluted?
I have pulled off hornworms and laid them near wasp nests (just to see if they would find it). They found it and covered that bad boy with their spawn. I could have destroyed it, but that’s gross. It was more fun to manipulate the wasps into doing my dirty work.
@David Hey dude, if you want my 2 cents worth of adice- I'd highly recommend you edit out the beginning part of this video and leave the true content in it. Maybe that way there'll be far more views and 'likes'. I'm thinking many didn't get past the 'intro' even though it was humorous. Seriously though, consider editing the beginning out and re-uploading this video
It sorts out some people to leave the strange things in. I have less people without humor. You're right that it would probably improve views, but I have a theory that it improves the quality of the comments section. Every once in a while I'll post something very strange/obscure/amusing to get some of the less interesting people to unsubscribe.

Had a bumper crop of beef steak tomatoes. Far more than we could eat. Wife made homemade tomato paste. Best stuff ever. Can't wait till next yield.

I have pulled off hornworms and laid them near wasp nests (just to see if they would find it). They found it and covered that bad boy with their spawn. I could have destroyed it, but that’s gross. It was more fun to manipulate the wasps into doing my dirty work.

Fruit flies destroyed my tomatos. Im in a tropical region. I have around 30 different strains. I have to use netting now or i will get nothing

Hey dude, if you want my 2 cents worth of adice- I'd highly recommend you edit out the beginning part of this video and leave the true content in it. Maybe that way there'll be far more views and 'likes'.

It sorts out some people to leave the strange things in. I have less people without humor. You're right that it would probably improve views, but I have a theory that it improves the quality of the comments section. Every once in a while I'll post something very strange/obscure/amusing to get some of the less interesting people to unsubscribe.
@@davidthegood I was simply suggesting the edit for this video given the nature of what it is with the feature guests you hve in it. Other than that I wouldn't say to not be you in our vids. It's just that tht part is right in the beginning of the vid and many might think you're being a bit serious, and many won't even get to the actual content of the video. That is worth considering just on the time of the ppl in the video that participated
