    There are a couple of lines in Kuala Lumpur.
    1) KTM Komuter was the first line way back in the early 90s Its basically a commuter train by the state owned KTM. It covers areas outside the cities and only bypasses KL.
    2)LRT Ampang and Sri Petaling were the first to be built by a particular company. It covers mostly the inner KL route.
    3) LRT Kelana Jaya was built about 1-2 years later by another company. It serves one route which is the Kelana Jaya route covering most of Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and parts of KL not covered by LRT Ampang.
    4) KL Monorel was built by another company after it was realized that there weren't any network within the city center.
    5) KLIA Express and Transit was done to allow travel to the airport and back, which wasnt covered by any of the lines above.
    6) MRT - was built because some parts of inner and outer KL was not connected by any of the rail networks above. So with the completion of MRT 2 next year and the LRT 3 about the same time next year, all parts of Klang Valley (Greater KL) would finally be serviced by train networks. Currently some areas are only serviced by bus lines.
    7) BRT network. If you noticed, Bandar Sunway is not connected to any train network currently because it is too deep inside. Therefore the owners of Sunway joined forces with Rapid KL to set up an all electric fully independent network to get people (mostly students studying in one of the many International Universities in Bandar Sunway) to and fro the place.
    Cost and terrain were the reasons why different transportations systems were built for different regions. But they are all centralized. So you can go anywhere you want to go, once you reach KL Sentral.
    Btw, today all networks are managed by Prasarana Nasional and KTM, which is why you can use the Touch N Go reload card in all train and bus networks in Malaysia. Btw did you know that the Touch N Go is the world's first payment, toll, parking, debit/credit and ID card all in one? However the basic card can just be used for transportation, toll and parking payments. In order to use all the other features, you need to apply for a comprehensive card.
    Malaysia was also the first country to introduce the biometric passport in 1999. We later sold the technology to the EU, Japan and the US.

      WOW! Great comment, brother. Thanks for taking the time to write this. Will pin it to the top so everyone can see. Really interesting stuff, learning how the public transport routes progressed over time. As a foreigner, we were really impressed with KL's trains and busway system. Also, the touch n go cards! Being the first multi-purpose payment and ID card is such a good idea, way to go Malaysia. It's one of those things that is so commonplace now, you can see why it was such a good idea/ important invention. Thanks again for the great comment. I read it twice

  • @sam39410ify
    @sam39410ify 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    It's easy to see why. Given the car ownership per capita in Malaysia, most of Malaysians prefer to use their own vehicles during this period for three main reasons.
    1. Avoiding to be in close contact with other commuters in the train. So less risk of contracting the virus.
    2. Much reduced highways congestion means similar, or even shorter commuting time by car.
    3. Rock bottom petrol price.

    • @JetLagWarriors
      @JetLagWarriors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good points! Malaysia is similar to North America in that regard. Lots of drivers, and cheap fuel prices. Good comment, thanks for sharing

  • @lopattike

    We, Malaysia (just like the rest of the world, I think) built our public transportation based on demand and fund. That's why you will see different line with different mode of transportation.

  • @ridzz
    @ridzz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yes you are right. Initially the transport lines were independently made and you'd have to buy ur tickets multiple times once you switch to another line. At one point, the government decided that to make it easier, an integrated public transportation method had to be created. So that's why now it's easier to switch to another line with only one ticket. But it is still named differently because of the traincars, capacity and technologies that are being used for the different lines.

    LRT - Light Rail Transit
    MRT -Mass Rapid Transit
    BRT - Bus Rapid Transit
    Monorail - Small mono track rail
    Komuter - Long range intercity commuter train
    ERL - airport express rail link
    It can be confusing especially to North Americans because you guys would just refer to it as a "metro" or something. Vancouver's or Bangkok's Skytrain system would be similar to our LRT since it has a smaller capacity. The MRT is much like a "subway" in all traditional sense since they are designed to carry more commuters with wider, longer trains and stuff. The Monorail is a unique cost-effective alternative especially for smaller cities like KL. The BRT is just a transit system using buses instead of trains. The Komuter is similar to the mass intercity trains in Tokyo and its surrounding places.
    The LRT system was first operational back in the 90s. The Monorail came second back in the early 2000s. The MRT (which is mostly underground) is the most ambitious one and has been in operation since the 2010s. The BRT is the latest, is currently only available in the suburbs of Subang Jaya. All of these rail systems were built by different contractors and has since been consolidated under a public transportation authority called Rapid KL(except for the Komuter which is under the national rail authority or KTM), much like the city transit authorities in the US or Canada.
    Hope this helps.

    when you took LRT, it was not peakhour. By the time you took Monorail there are more people since it is after office hour.

Not only that, you might one day visit the biggest KL Bus Station which is built with the same purpose as KL Central. The bus station called; Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) or in English; Southern Integrated Terminal. It is an integrated bus station that connects the entire Peninsula of Malaysia including journey to Singapore & Thailand and it is so huge, big and beautiful as an airport ... ok my friend, enjoy your visit to Malaysia.

    • @JetLagWarriors

      Hah! Lucky guess. Also, in Korea, they were really proud that every train line was built by the government, for the people, and this way they were all virtually the same in technology, design, layout, etc. So, maybe we can say it was an 'educated guess', lol

    • @vincentchin88
      @vincentchin88 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JetLagWarriors Malaysia was a car nation. There was a lot of political and commercial wrangling when the first line was built. I was in the Press then in the mid-90s. Property owners were arguing that the right to land was also below me. So you can't dig any lines below my building. That time is was the first time the city built a train system so there were apprehensions. Thus, you would have noticed the first city line, LRT, were mostly above ground. Slowly when property owners accepted the benefits of the train system, they didn't fight tooth and nail for the train to be under them.
